Mark and his crew showed up and got to work on time. They kept the site tidy and worked fast. The house looked great for about a year. Then the paint started to peel again. Badly. Soon, the entire south side of my house was blistered and peeling. Other parts were blistering in places. I told Mark about the problem. He took some time to get out to my house, then he brought a paint rep. By this time, I was worried about my warranty expiring. Was it pro-rated? We didn't really have much in writing. The paint rep said that the surface had not been properly cleaned before painting. Mark said he wanted to make it right. I happen so see him a lot in my social life (our paths intersected after the painting job). He came to my house once and did a lot of scraping. But then he just abandoned the job. I would ask him if he could do anything. He said he didn't have the kind of crew that could do the job anymore. And besides, lead abatement rules had changed since I originally had the house painted. We kept negotiating different solutions. Finally, Mark was going to provide me with some paint and lend me ladders and I was going to do the job myself. He never came through. Now, all of the paint on my house is loose. I have concluded that the wrong kind of paint for the job was used. Otherwise, how could it be peeling from the bare shingles? I feel bad for Mark: the shingles were unfamiliar to him; he tried an approach; it didn't work. But the bottom line is, I spent four figures on having my house repainted and now my ONLY possibility is to spend twice as much to have it redone or remove the shingles and reside the house (which is my eventual solution). I know Mark is currently working in house painting, and I wish he would make this right. If he could refund some part of my cost, I could use the money to put toward the siding I should have done in the first place. I wrestle with this situation: is it Mark's fault that my siding was tricky? No. But no professional should do work on a surface they are not familiar with without accepting the risk. My house feels ruined. It is an eyesore to the neighborhood, and I need thousands of dollars to fix it.
Description of Work: When I first hired Mark Nelson and his crew to paint my house, I was in dire straits. The North Minneapolis inspections sweep had left me with a 60 day deadline to correct the peeling paint over my concrete asbestos shingling. Mark's company was very new, but he seemed very knowledgeable. We talked extensively about how to correct the problem. Mark seemed very knowledgeable about the products that he was using and the techniques that he was applying. We discussed the warranty on the paint (5-year) and the work to be done.
