I was contacted by Roman from Hallmark Builder’s shortly after I purchased the deal. We arranged for him to meet with me and my husband to discuss the work we needed to get done and to get an estimate as to the number of hours required for the work requested. We told him that we weren’t in a big rush to get the work done and that he could take a few days to get the estimate to us. He got an estimate to us in a few days, but it just listed a total price for each project, not detailing how many hours for each job and what was labor and what would be for materials. It also didn’t include every project we talked about. We went back and forth with questions and finally I provided an Excel spreadsheet to him asking to fill in the amounts with the number of hours for each project. I finally got this estimate two weeks after I made the request. I also needed a form completed for our HOA for the outdoor work (gutters) that we were having done, so I needed him to provide some information to me to meet the requirements of the HOA. I received the information and submitted it to our HOA, but they came back asking for more information. Roman provided pictures of gutters with covers on it, which actually wouldn’t be the gutters that would be installed. It took many weeks to get all the correct information from Roman for the HOA requirements. Roman had a supplier for the granite and the gutters and one vendor he provided for the bathtubs. He didn’t provide a source for getting the tile. We went to the granite supplier and looked at options, they weren’t able to give us prices for other levels of the granite while we were there. They had to send in a request to Roman and he had to get back to us with the price difference for the granite. We ended up getting our bathtub and tile and all supplies (backerboard, thin set, grout, etc.) on our own. We also got our own microwave and cabinet for the kitchen. It took a couple of months to get everything arranged for them to actually start the work. We said we weren’t in a great hurry, but we were thinking a few weeks, not a couple of months. Roman said he could get all the bathroom work done in two days. It actually took over a week. The workers were later than they said for every day that they came and they never worked a full day. Plus there were different workers showing up each day that they came to do the work, so there was no continuity and we had to explain what we wanted each time someone new came. We had to be at home when they did all this work, which we hadn’t planned on since he said it was to be done in two days. The work was not quality work. They were going to leave a large tile in cracked, until we insisted that it be replaced. The accent tile was installed crooked and we insisted that they had to replace at least some of the tile that was terribly uneven. We didn’t have a lot of the accent tile to spare, so we just went with some of it that wasn’t perfect. They were sloppy. They didn’t protect the new bathtub after they installed it and started working on the tile, there were screws and other debris in the tub and then they were stepping in it, so that could have left it scratched. Fortunately, it didn’t get scratched. They also left a terrible mess under the kitchen sink for us to clean up. In midstream of the tile project, they informed us that we needed to get a plumber to install a pipe for the faucet/shower head set that we had purchased. I assumed that plumbing work would be included in the hours, but we were told it was not and that we had to pay $600 to have the plumbing work done so that they could finish the project. We agreed to pay it because we wanted to work complete. The plumber spent 15 minutes doing the work. When it came to doing the grout, many of the accent pieces of tile got broken in the grouting process, which was just left that way with extra grout filling the broken spots. Not a quality job at all. At this point, we just needed the work done and decided to go with what we had. Next the granite was to be installed. We were told that the granite, the sink, and faucet would all be installed by the granite company in one day. The granite and the sink were installed, but we were told that the sink had to set for a day before the faucet could be done and that they didn’t do the faucet install. Again, Roman said that we had to have a plumber install the faucet and that would be another $200. Since we were having to have a plumber anyway, we also had new shutoff valves installed, which was another $150 (which was done by his regular crew, but not included in the hours already paid). It also involved being home another day for that work to be done. Finally, that work was completed. The gutters were installed while we were out of town (we weren’t advised ahead of time of when it was to be done). The granite and the gutter work was done well. The bathroom work was not and the time it took to get it all done was way more than the estimate. Roman didn’t try to charge the full amount of time it actually took to get it done (many of the extra hours were due to having to do re-work of poor work done). He did, however, charge four more hours than was estimated for the work and another $950 more for the plumbing work. We had another job on our list, but decided not to have them do it due to the poor quality of the work done. We purchased the deal the end of March and all the work was finally complete in June. If I had to do it over, I would hire professionals specifically for the projects to be done. I definitely would not hire this contractor again. This is the first time I’ve hired a professional from Angie’s list and not been happy with the results.
