Barnes Plumbing Co Inc. started in 1982 when Jeff and Bill Barnes decided they wanted to open their own shop. A flip of a coin decided who was going to be the President and Vice-President. Starting off in the basement of an apartment building near Franklin Ave. in Minneapolis, they soon outgrew the space and have since been operating in their own building near Dowling Ave and I-94. In August of 2010, Bill and Jeff Barnes made the hard decision to retire. The company was purchased by Michael Pemberton a long time employee of 10 years. Michael believes in the same principles that Bill and Jeff had with their company of being fair, honest and giving quality service. Barnes Plumbing relies mostly on word-of-mouth referrals. They have been successful in this way because of the way they choose to run their business. Fair, Honest, Quality Service. For over three decades, Barnes Plumbing has stood by quality work, fair pricing and superior service to satisfy the plumbing and heating needs of customers.

I couldn't have asked for a better experience. Austin took the time to evaluate the problem, make sure he was delivering the right solution, and finished the job quickly and at a level of high quality. He cleaned up after himself, it was like he was never there. You can tell that Barnes hires quality individuals and has high standards of customer service. Austin is a bright young guy who does great work and communicates very well to customers. The next time we have any type of plumbing need, there's no doubt we'll give Barnes Plumbing a call. I recommend you do the same.
Description of Work: We had a very similar issue to one of the reviews posted below - we had a leaky outdoor faucet that would spray us in the face and make huge puddles in the grass whenever we used the backyard hose. We've also had some issues with water in the basement when we left the hose on for long periods of time, usually when using the sprinkler. We tried a couple different hoses and had the same problem, so we figured the problem was in the faucet.I reviewed several plumbing companies on Angie's List, and called Barnes based on the many positive reviews. Scheduling was a breeze with a very friendly gal on the other end of the phone. I have a fairly long commute, so I requested a time either first thing in the morning or last thing in the afternoon. She found a 4pm opening for me two days after I called, so we agreed to that. Austin showed up right on time and was very friendly and respectful of our home. He put shoe covers over his boots each time he walked into the house. I showed him where the outdoor faucet was and where the piping was inside the house in the downstairs ceiling. He was very thorough, double-checking that it was indeed the correct pipe before he began his work. He said it would be a quick, easy fix.So I told him to come and go as he pleased, and I went and grabbed a book and went to another room. He went back and forth to his truck a couple times, and before I knew it he was done. He took me outside to show me what he did, and then we went inside to look at the new piping. He showed me what to do in the winter when shutting down the faucet for the season. Then he wrote up the invoice (with excellent penmanship, by the way) for $190 and he was on his way. In and out in about 40 minutes, and I'm very happy with the results. There is no more leakage at the faucet, and now we can re-plant grass around the area that would previously get flooded!

Brian from Barnes Plumbing called ahead to ask if he could stop by a few minutes early. At first, he thought he might be able to repair the faucet instead of replacing it. Because Barnes Plumbing charges for a minimum of one hour, he asked if we had any other work that needed to be done during that time. As it turned out, the previous faucet was so old that he ended up replacing it instead. It took 1.5 hours time @ $130 per hour. He also provided a recommendation regarding another issue we've experienced since moving into the house: a hammer when draining hot water from the upstairs level of our house. WIf we need plumbing services again, we will favor Barnes Plumbing based on this pleasant and professional experience.
Description of Work: We bought our house a year ago. One of our exterior faucets sprayed so much water when turned on that it quickly flooded the area. It seemed to be spraying out of the anti-siphon valve. The faucet was connected in the wall so we didn't want to attempt replacement ourselves. We asked Barnes Plumbing to assess the faucet and repair or replace it as necessary. Given that our house was 23 years old, and the faucet was likely an original, we expected that it would probably need to be replaced. Because the old faucet was fragile and could not be repaired, Barnes Plumbing replaced it. It took approximately 1.5 hours of time.

I called and was given a quote over the phone for the work. They were able to come out the next afternoon. Brian called as he was leaving his prior job giving me a very accurate time of arrival. He was early before the specified 2 hour window which was great. I provided the new garbage disposal. Brian clearly was experienced in this type of work and replaced the old disposal in less than 1 hour. He volunteered to re-caulk the sink that was loose since he finished the disposal installation in less that the minimum billable time. He carefully tested the installation and thoroughly cleaned up after the job. Brian was pleasant and knowledgeable and I would be happy to hire him to do plumbing work in the future.

I called Barnes plumbling to replace a shut-off valve that I couldn't get to stop leaking. The shut-off valve controlled a couple of outside hose spigots and each year that I've turned them off or on, they've leaked somewhat. I normally could get the valve to stop leaking by adjusting how far it was opened or closed, but this year I couldn't get it to stop for the life of me. I called Barnes in the morning and they let me know that they could have someone there in the afternoon for me. Zach arrived in the window they had given me. He was polite and professional and immediately put on booties over his shoes as to not track any dirt inside the house (hey... it's the little things that go unappreciated sometimes). Zach went down to the basement to investigate and he was able to stop the leak merely by tightening down the packing nut on the valve (something that I had attempted to do before I called, but failed at apparently). He waited a few minutes to ensure that the leak had truly stopped, and to my pleasant surprise didn't charge me for the work! His reasoning - he didn't do any "real" work so he just couldn't put himself to charge me. It totally made my day! It's nice to know that there are people out there not just looking to make a quick buck and that are honest in their assessment of fair payment for services rendered. I'll gladly use Barnes again in the future just based off my experience with them and would highly recommend them to friends and neighbors in the future.

The service call was completed within 24 hours of our call to Barnes Plumbing. The services provided were exactly what we needed. Barnes had the tools and equipment necessary to complete the job. The sinks in the kitchen and bathrooms were immediately useable. The fee for services was within our expectations. The work was top notch!
Description of Work: On 05/10/12 we called Barnes Plumbing to schedule an appointment to fix what appeared to be a leaky drain pipe underneath the kitchen sink. Brian came out on 05/11/12. He arrived 10 minutes early and prepared to diagnose our issue. According to Brian, the rubber that held our kitchen faucet and soap dispenser to the sink top was worn. This resulted in water dripping from the faucet into the storage space underneath the kitchen sink. Brian installed a new kitchen faucet which fit snugly. He replaced the old soap dispenser with a nice sprayer hose. We also asked Brian to install a new pop up drain and pipe for our bathroom sink. He had the perfect parts in stock on his truck.

Brian called ahead and showed up EXACTLY on time, as estimated by Sheryl. He knew what I needed but still double-checked with me to see whether that was all. Brian quickly went to work and worked steadily without any need of supervision from me. He identified another potential problem with the lack of a cut-off valve on the cold water side (that I had also noticed previously). Initially, I decided that since the inspector hadn't said anything, that we'd leave it as it was. Brian quietly agreed. As he worked, I reassessed the situation and asked what it would cost and how much time. He quickly sized it up, said "a couple of bucks for the fixture and less than 1/2 hour of labor." Based on that, I decided to go ahead and have him do it right. We got all done, and he tested out all the connections. In doing so, he discovered a major leak in the new 'deflector' between the faucet and the sprayer. Brian quickly trouble-shot that issue -- an o-ring had gotten bent over when it originally went into the line -- fixed it and retested. It all worked. He quickly completed his clean-up and went to make up the bill. Bottom line: I got everything fixed that I requested, plus the additional cutoff valve replacement, all for less than the original estimate. Couldn't be happier.
Description of Work: Getting ready to sell the house and needed to have a new sink installed. Also, needed to adjust an old connection from the dishwasher into the drain. Found Barnes highly rated on Angie's and called. "Sheryl" listened to what I needed, asked a couple of good questions and gave me an estimate of 2 to 2 1/2 hours labor ($130/hour) plus materials. Set up a time that worked with my schedule and told me that "Brian" would be my plumber.

This was a very short visit--about 10 minutes. We were billed for an hour's worth of time, which I understand. It was expensive, but at least I know that I won't have to call a plumber the next time we have this problem.
Description of Work: We had an intermittent problem with a toilet that hissed when we flushed it and the tank was filling up. It seemed to be getting worse, so I called Barnes Plumbing because we used them before and were very sastisfied. The plumber showed up on time, and fixed the problem by replacing the fill valve and turning up the water pressure. I thought that the entire fill valve had to be unscrewed, taken out, and a new one put in, but only the upper part of the fill valve had to be removed. He unscrewed the top of the old fill valve and screwed in the top of a newer and higher quality fill valve--and showed me how to do this so I could fix it in the future.

When I went to take a shower this morning, I had no hot water. I live in a relatively new house (2007) with an equally new water heater. I tried to call the company that had installed it, only to find they were out of business. After looking on Angie's List, I called Barnes. The woman I talked to in the office was very polite and helpful and told me she could have some out around midday and that he would follow up with me directly. The plumber called me and further refined when I could expect him, also calling about 5-10 minutes prior to his arrival to ensure that I was home. The plumber was very professional, he took shoe covers on and off when coming in and out of the house. He tightened up the drain, which was leaking, and did diagnostic tests. The water heater had gone into a safe mode, which he was able to bring it out of. After further testing he determined that the water heater was functioning properly. After about 1/2 hour I had hot water again and was VERY happy to get to finally take my shower. After getting the water heater back up and running, he also took the time to answer some further questions I had regarding water heaters, replacements, tankless vs. tanked, etc., which was very helpful. All I was charged for was the 1 hour of labor.

Went great! Gentleman was on time, was polite, wore the little shoe covers, understood the problem immediately, was able to remove the rusted out pipe without damage to teh rest of the bath area, replaced, and was on his way in short order. Understood that we wanted a spout with matching finish, and was able to get one when he got the pipe he needed. Repalced everything and was on his way in short order, and the cost was about 1/3 of what it would have been using one of the copmpanies we had used previously, even with the cost of the spout included.
Description of Work: Removed rusted through pipe nipple on bathtub spout (had rusted theough enough to fall off), replaced with a brass one to prevent it from happening again, replaced tub spout with one with matching finish. He also went to Menard's to get the pipe and the spout. Was able to remove the offending pipe without cutting into the wall or the surround thank goodness.

I spoke with Mike on the phone and had set-up an appointment for replacement and got a quote prior to plumber coming out. It was very important for me to get quote prior to someone showing up then charging a fee I couldn't shop for a competitive price. Zach showed up on time was very professional and told me lets try to rebuild the faucet before replacing it. Needless to say he was able to repair the existing faucet and save me $300+. I appreciate the honesty of a $15 repair kit versus a $250 shower valve. I will only use Barnes in the future and would recommend them to anyone looking for an honest and professional plumbing company. I appreciate that Barnes is very upfront ant they charge for time and materials the way it should be. I was totally ripped off by a different local company when we had a leaking drain and then they come out and charge $80 for a consultation and give a flat rate job quote on top the consultation fee. Long story short if i had called Barnes instead i would have saved over $250. My advice is if they don't tell you what they charge per hour up front find someone else.

Early one morning my husband started to replace the cartridge on a leaking faucet and ran into an impasse when he couldn’t remove a component. Not wanting to damage the faucet, he decided to call Barnes Plumbing for help. The person answering the phone was very helpful and said she would check to see if someone could come over the same day. She called back shortly, and said a plumber would be at our house within two hours. Zach Ford was very polite and competent. He first showed my husband the “secret” he had missed in trying to extract the cartridge and then proceeded to disassemble the rest of the faucet. Unfortunately, he quickly discovered that the faucet was rusted beyond repair. Since the faucet had a lifetime guarantee, I called the manufacturer for a replacement, but was told that a customer service agent would call us back. Instead, Zach called the Contractors’ Line and explained the situation. Since our faucet was not available in stock, we were told that it would take about a week for one to be made and sent to us. Zach told us that in view of the situation, he would return to install the new faucet and would not charge us for this initial service call. However, after he had left, we thought about living for a week without a kitchen faucet and decided we really didn’t want to go through that. We made a quick trip to the local home handyman store and bought a new faucet and then called Barnes to see how soon Zach could come back. We were told that he could make it back the next morning. Zach arrived promptly at the appointed time and proceeded to install the new faucet. Not only did he do a good job of that, but he also left the area under our sink much cleaner than it had been in years! And we now have a spare faucet in case this one goes on the fritz after a few years.

Mark installed the new faucet in the kichen, fixed a leak in the faucet in the basement, and fixed a running toilet in bath. He did an excellent job. His fees were very reasonable (145.00 for everything) a lot less than other companies that I called. He came out within a day. Punctuality and responsiveness were great. Called in the morning and they were around noon. Had a simple clogged toilet and I don't own a toilet auger and didn't want to deal with it. Within in 2 min of being in the house the service technician asked me if I wanted a new toilet installed (which he said he had on the truck). This was before any attempt to snake the toilet. First attempt to snake the toilet was half-hearted (I was standing right there) almost as if he didn't want it to work so he could sell me a new toilet. I asked him to snake it again and after that, the toilet worked fine. I would not use them again. There are plenty of plumbers out there I'd rather than use one who would try to sell me unnecessary work.

Barnes Plumbing was chosen via Angie's list, and we were not disappointed. The scheduler (Cheryl?) who took the phone was very helpful and pleasant. Initially I thought we had a leak from the upstairs bathroom. She arranged for Jeff to come out on short notice. He was helpful and gave me some valuable information. Turns out the leak was the upstairs toilet itself. The return call to purchase set up a time to install toilets was just as pleasant and she was just as helpful as the first time. When Jeff came to install the toilets, he was on time, professional, and did the job in an appropriate amount of time. The price on the toilets was very good and the labor costs were reasonable.
Description of Work: Installation of 2 toilets, upstairs and downstairs, which we purchased from them. The installation included the removal and disposal of the old toilets.
