The tech was certainly nice enough of a guy, but I felt a little miffed when he left. Garage doors aren't exactly nuclear reactors, they are pretty simple machines. I gave the whole thing some thought, did about 20 minutes of research on the internet, and found that this problem is not exactly uncommon. I laid out a plan to start eliminating outside factors - disconnected the button near my "people door" inside the garage, problem still was there. Disconnected the exterior keypad, problem was still there. Removed batteries from all remotes, problem still there. Reset the sync between the unit and the remotes, and the problem seems to have gone away. The phantom opening used to happen at least once a day, going on two weeks with no issues. Luckily, I did not have to take the next step and replace the control board. (even if I did, they only price out to $60) I'd think that someone who worked on these doors for a living could have given me this checklist from memory so I could try all of it on my own, and even offer to come back (for a fee of course) to install a control board if it got narrowed down that far. Instead, the only option left on the table in his mind was a new opener. Thanks but no thanks, I'll save the $300. Bottom line is - I would use the company again, but would definitely request a more seasoned technician.
Description of Work: Had a door that had some issues - one, it needed adjustment after freezing to the ground. Second, it was phantomly going up and down at random times during the day/night. The first issue was pretty simple to fix - a few adjustments and tightening of the chain and everything was working much smoother. The second one, the tech had no answers for. Understandable given that the problem was hard to replicate on the spot. He checked the wires for cracks and made sure the eyes were still lined up. Other than that, he had no answers on how to fix the problem, save from buying a new opener at a cost of approx $300-$400.

Response from Metro Garage Door Co
Unfortunately for this customer, this kind of problem is the most frustrating type of garage door problem because it is erratic and unpredictable. It never seems to malfunction when we arrive to identify the problem or when the customer wants to show us what is going wrong. The best we can do when this happens is to try to narrow the problem identification down to several possibilities, such as stuck remote buttons, and staples in the wall button wire. The only other option is for us to spend a lot of time waiting at the customers home to see if we can get the opener to produce the malfunction again, which it never seems to do. We don't think that is in the customer's best interest, nor do they usually. The technician did what he could at the time and was unable to detect the source of the malfunctioning opener. His actions were normal for this situation. He also offered to replace the opener. Often when this type of problem occurs the opener is older. Instead of putting money into an older machine repairs, it is better to put that same money toward a new opener which will have a warrranty and not have other problems that might arise in it. We always try to offer options for the customer and point out the pros and cons of those options. We would be happy to help out this customer with his problem when he is ready to make a decision to do something about it that will address his situation for the long term. We empathize with this customer's situation. It is frustrating to have this type of problem, especially during the cold weather. We appreciate his feed back and are willing to help him out when he lets us know he wants further help from us. Thank you for the opportunity to serve your garage door needs. We hope you'll give a chance to help you out in the future. Sincerely, Doug Robinson President

I selected Metro Garage Door based on its ratings, its showroom in its own permanent building, quality, and price. I was very happy with the entire process from selection of a new door and opener in its Golden Valley showroom, to on site pre-installation evaluation, to scheduling, and installation. The purpose of the pre-installation inspection was to determine whether there would be any problems that could add to the cost of the installation. This part of the process was done on the afternoon of the same day that I made my selections in their showroom. Installation followed the next week. The installer arrived on time and did a very clean and professional installation. At the end, he took time to explain operation of the new opener controls and showed me all the points that needed semi-annual lubrication and the type of lubricant to use. Of all the jobs that I had done in 2010, this was the one with which I was most satisfied.
Description of Work: Metro Garage Door removed and replaced my single car garage door and opener. All of the old materials and scrap were hauled away.

My garage door would only open about one foot. I called Monday morning and was able to schedule an appointment for the next day between 8-12 am. The repair person arrived around 9 and was able to fix the problem - even though the temperature was below zero and it is a detached garage.

I accidentally backed in to the garage door two days ago. Once I realized how much I had bent it, I called Metro Garage Door yesterday (12/22/10). (They did the original installation in 2005, and replaced broken springs this past summer.) I was delighted that they could come out one day after I called, at this busy Christmas season. Scott arrived in the specified time window, and was able to manually bend the door back in to shape, saving us the cost of replacing the panel. He also noticed that routine maintenance had not been done since the 2005 installation (they record all service on a sticker on the garage wall). He did a "23 point service", and it now opens and closes MUCH more quietly! Lubrication will do that! Scott was efficient and professional. We will continue to use Metro Garage Door Co. for all servicing.
Description of Work: Straightened garage door (I had backed in to it) and performed "23 point service" (adjusting chain and lubricating track).

I was very satisfied. My garage door opener was 18 years old. It was very noisy, and would squeek like crazy. I worried it would break so I made an appointment for a new one. I made the appointment several days in advance for 12pm to 5pm. The weather forecast was fine when I made the appt. but changed. The weather was awful that afternoon- very snowy. The installers were understandably backed up. The installer called me about 4pm and arrived about 5pm and finished after 7pm. I was expecting him to try and reschedule me and if he'd asked to I'd have understood (long day, I wasn't an emergency).but would have said I'm working rest of week and will have to wait until January. But he didn't - he said if I wanted a new opener installed tonight he'd get it done. Yes, I give A for punctual because the roads and snow were beyond their control. I felt bad for the guy having to work so late. I used to worry a lot about the door opener or spring breaking since they were old. I don't now. The new garage door opener is much quieter too. And I like the keypd that was installed. There's no more awful squeeks either with the new roller and bottom piece.
Description of Work: They replaced the garage door opener, installed a keypad, replaced the spring, and a couple rollers.

Our old opener finally gave out. Base upon the reviews I called to make an appointment. They scheduled service for the following day. The technician called me at work and gave me the option of having my old opener repaired or replacing with a new one. Since the opener was old I elected for full replacement. When I arrived home my new opener was working just as expected. Great work!

I scheduled Metro to come out to replace the garage door opener between 9 am and noon. Scheduler had initially tried to say between 8 and noon. I said I couldn't be here til 9 a.m. since I had to take a disabled person to work. Their website currently says that you can schedule between 9 and noon, not 8 and noon. She said that's ok, that we'd schedule for 9-noon. Installer called on my cell at 8:32. I said the appointment was for 9 am, and I'd actually be home in 20 minutes. And I was. I called him before 9 to say I was home, and he said he was told to go elsewhere. I called the Metro to make sure they would send someone out this morning as planned. They said not til the next day. I took time off from work for this, so I asked for the supervisor. Service manager Todd was very rude and dismissive. He kept saying that I wasn't home at 8:45. I reminded him that the appointment was for 9. With that kind of attitude, I will never use Metro, and I advise others not to do so.
Description of Work: Metro never showed up as scheduled, and they refused to honor their appointment.

We apologize to this customer for the confusion that occurred about the arrival time for her service call. With the weather being cold as it was our schedule for the day was very full and we were unable to offer her another time before the next day. Unfortunately for us, she decided to go with another company rather than wait til the next day for the next available appointment time we offerred her. We have followed up with our staff to identify what lead to this confusion and have made adjustments to prevent it from occurring for other customers. We are thankful for this customer's feedback. I called Metro Grage Door company when my opener stopped working. I was successful in having a same day service call. My one complaint is that I was given a window of 10-2 and and they did not arrive until 5pm. They would have cancelled the service call "because we had a big commerical job" (way to make your residential customer feel vallued), except for my objection and insistance that they honor their commitment. After all, I took the day off of work to wait for them. Virtually all of my irritation disappeared when the service technician, Tom, arrived. He was professional, speedy and friendly. I ended up having to replace the door opener. Tom explained everything and made sure all of the details were taken care of before he left. Yay, Tom! You made a bad experience a goodone. If it weren't for the office/schedulding experience this would have been an "A"

ok--I had used Ridge before, but learned when I called that Ridge was purchased by Metro Garage. Although I was not made aware of the minimum service call charge and it only took a moment for the repair (which was an assessment that I had accidentally shut the electric off to the opener) I was initially assessed a fee of $100 for the repair. I immediately tried to negotiate the charge by phone, and after several phone calls and several days I was pleased when Kevin whom I had initially talked with agreed to waive the customary service fee. I would use again, but know that this is not the old Ridge Door and one should make sure they know what the charges are that will be assessed in fifteen minute increments for labor.

I called on a Saturday afternoon for service and the dispatcher said the tech would be over within half an hour since there was another job in the same city. After waiting for an hour, I called and was told that he "forgot" to tell the tech about my call. The tech was across town and couldn't return until the afternoon. Obviously this was a big hassle since I had to rearrange my schedule. When the tech arrived that afternoon, he replaced both springs and adjusted the garage door. He was in and out within 15 minutes. If the dispatcher was not incompetent, then they would receive a perfect A.

I called on Monday morning and asked for a Tuesday appt. They quoted me a time of 8:00 to noon. I stayed home from work that morning and around 10:15am called to get a status check on the repair guy and make sure I was still on the schedule. When I called, they asked my name, then my address and I wait and wait and they couldn't seem to find my appt. (Although they never said that.) Then they ask for my phone number and said they would call me back. At 11:00am, I hadn't heard from them so I called again and they said yes, yes, I was on the schedule for an afternoon appt. I said, "no I have an 8:00 to noon appt. I told everyone at work I'd be back by the afternoon." They then said someone would be out by noon or shortly there after. I do think somehow they didn't get my original appt scheduled so I think they scrambled to accommodate me. So, the appt took longer than I had expected. I didn't get to work until after 2:00 but at least the work got done well. The repair guy, Dana, arrived right at noon. He was very professional and did a great job of installing the new garage door opener. He explained how everything worked. He was great. After a rocky start it turned out well. I appreciate Metro scrambling to get my appt in!

I was in a panic Saturday morning, because the spring on my garage door was broke, the manual lift wouldn't work, and my car was stuck in my garage - with a busy weekend ahead. I called Metro Garage Door at 9:30 am, and the tech was here and project completed by 11:30 am. They had a coupon through Angie's List, so I got a great price - especially for a Saturday! Spring had broken on 15 year old door and decided to replace. Salesperson needed to come to house to measure and give quote. Had examples of section of doors. Incorrect information given about replacement garage doors in existing homes only had to meet 80 mph wind code. Spoke with city inspection engineer who stated city code was the same as state law 90 mph for 3 seconds. Called manufacturer since no information on website. Called and spoke with supervisor Carin Christle who gave quote for same door/opener installed to meet state law $254 higher and would not be available for installation for 2-3 weeks.
Description of Work: Quote for 16' x7' insulated, steel 24 gauge outside/27 gauge inside (lower gauge is thicker) garage door. Original quote for Amarr Heritage 3000 16 x 7, white short panel door with 15" radius track and with Liftmaster 3255 door opener $1418.00. Quote for same door 90 mph wind loaded (to meet current state law) door/door opener $1672.00. Optional Liftmaster keyless entry pad ($55). 2-3 weeks before the door would be delivered and ready for installation.

Member was confused by an inaccurate statement by one of our sales persons about the 90 MPH wind code building requirement. She was given the correct information by our office staff. There is additional costs for a windloaded door since it requires more parts and labor to install. Home owners need to understand that different cities take different approches to implementing this 90 MPH windload requirement. Her city was informed and gave her the correct information, while many others of the 135 cities in the Metro area do not. We have followed up with our sales person to make sure that he is giving accurate info to out customers and prospects. Thank you for the feed back. Sincerely, D. Robinson- Metro Garage Door Co.

Perfect. Found the doors I wanted using the internet. I wanted low maintenance, insulated doors with insulated glass windows. I decided on the Amarr Olympus 500. Manufacturer supplied name of local dealer. Found approximate price using search engines. Called Metro for estimate and color samples. Salesman arrived exactly on time, and properly prepared with samples. Price was exactly what I expected. They then honored $200 in coupons. Doors arrived 3 weeks later, exactly as promised. Installer scheduled to arrive between 9-10AM. Arrived at 9:15AM. Install was supposed to take 5-6 hours. Took exactly 5 hours. Installer then spent an extra 30 minutes explaining future maintenance and lubrication for the new doors. He made sure to cycle the doors several times for me and verify that I was happy with fit, finish and seals. He made sure all garage door opener settings were working, and made sure all nuts and bolts for the opener hardware were tight, whether he had touched them during the install, or not. I really felt I finally got what I paid for from someone, and couldn't be happier with both the salesman and installer. They were honest, knowledgeable, and friendly.

My garage door got knocked out of the track when a young driver in my household was backing out of the garage. The result - door stuck, car in the garage. The spring mount on our garage door mechanism broke just a few days after we bought our new house, trapping one of our cars inside during a very busy time for us (and on a weekend, of course). Metro got a technician (hey Dana!) to our place the same day, within just a few hours of my call. He was prompt, professional, explained the issues with the kit the previous owners had put in but didn't try any heavy-handed up-sell. His work was done quickly and he explained everything as he went. I will certainly call on these guys again.

It went very smooth. They showed up on time, did the work, cleaned up, and left. The only small issue was that they were going to replace our remote key pad and other remotes because they did not see that we had an existing separate control unit for the key pad and remotes. That was the only issue that had my wife not caught, we would have had to pay more for stuff we did not need. The new motor is quieter, smoother, and the wires look much neater than the old garage door opener and sensors.
Description of Work: Our garage door opener motor quit working. They came out to repair it and told us it was totally dead (wiring was bad). They replaced the motor, conflict sensors, and guide track. We used the same company to install the garage door and tracks last fall when the old door rotted out.

In the middle of the Memorial Day holiday weekend, my garage door decided to finally surrender - one of the compensating springs completely sheared off, meaning the effort to open the door suddenly went to around 200 pounds...with one car inside and one car outside. Called Metro based on ratings on the list, and based on the fact that the woman who answered the phone on Sunday was very clear and concise in delivering my options. Opted not to do an emergency call on the weekend (and the woman at the call center was very clear about the costs that would have been associated with that), but was able to schedule a call for first thing Tuesday morning. Andy (the service tech) arrived promptly on time, after having called to confirm. VERY clearly laid out the options, including making it clear where I could save some money by omitting some of the preventative maintenance (which I opted for anyway - $50 is cheap insurance for a broken cable). Finished the work well within the time estimate, and under the cost estimate. Couldn't be happier with the work. Noticed a few comments questioning the price of the service versus the amount of time required. I work in a field where I do a lot of work with construction trades, and I have to say that I think there's a misconception about what you're paying for in a case like this: you're not just paying an hourly rate - you're paying for the expertise and the efficient performance of the work (which also means showing up with all the parts you need to do the job). And Metro clearly understands this and performs extremely well.

Called to schedule and was given an option for that afternoon; ended up scheduling for later in the week. They do schedule in four hour blocks, so it can be inconvenient if you need an exact time. I scheduled for 8 to noon and got a call at 8:30 when Randy was a few minutes away. Overall service was great. He asked what I wanted to have done, surveyed the situation briefly and we agreed on the work. He replaced both torsion springs, the broken one and the other old one, checked the rest of the components, adjusted the settings, lubricated the joints and rollers, etc. I explained a few other issues, and Randy suggested changes. He even moved one of the sensors to make it less prone to problems with the sun shining on it. Randy was all done in about 30 minutes. No fooling around, just get the work done. He was pleasant and professional the entire time and offered great tips on maintainig the performance of the door and opener. Oh that all trades calls could be this painless. I also had the occassion to talk to the scheduling staff a couple other times. They were helpful and knowledgable about the work that could be done, prices, equipment, etc. All in all a very good experience.
Description of Work: Replaced broken torsion spring and performed overall check and adjustments.
