I purchased a Big Deal coupon for Dr. Sweep's services months ago. Unlike other 'Big Deal' coupons I have purchased, I didn't receive any contact or calls from the company. No problem, they are probably waiting on me to schedule the best time for the masonry work. When I finally felt the time was right I called Dr. Sweep to schedule an appointment for the work: mortar repair on a small 2 foot section of a brick heat stack on my roof. I was immediately put on hold. After several minutes I was able to speak to a woman (Yvonne?) and I explained that I had a Big Deal coupon for 4 hours of masonry repair. She informed me that a person would need to come on-site to create an estimate. The appointment was scheduled for 1 week later. On the day of the estimate Pat arrived at my home near the end of the scheduled window. He stated he didn't know anything about the Angie's list coupon so I explained that it was for 4 hours of masonry repair. I was hoping that he had received this information from the office, but there must have been a break-down in communication. I offered to give him a copy of the coupon but he said he didn't need it. He than told me that he wasn't sure that the coupon would be valid for the mortar work I needed on my chimney/heat stack. According to him, the owner of Dr. Sweep has been doing a lot of advertising with Groupon, Angie's List, etc. so he is not sure what coupons are good and which ones aren't. He further explained to me that the coupon was probably for work at-or-near ground level and I needed to check the fine print of the coupon. He stated that he would create an estimate for the work I wanted performed, but it would cost more because it was on the roof! First, I had a copy of the coupon (which he refused to look at) and nowhere does it say that mortar work is only at-or-near ground level. Second, when does a chimney company charge more because the work is above ground level? The quote that I received (which was addressed to another person because he accidentally gave my paperwork to someone else) was for $550. The Big Deal coupon was not taken into consideration. I asked Pat if the 2 feet of mortar work (tuck point repair only) can be done within a 4 hour time-frame. He replied "most likely yes" and left my home shortly thereafter. I called up the office after Pat left and asked if they would honor my Angie's List coupon. They said the Big Deal coupon is valued at $250 which would be subtracted from the total estimate. To be clear: I paid $99 for 4 hours of masonry work equal to $250 which is then deducted from a $550 estimate. The grand total I would have paid for the mortar repair would have been $399.....for a small job that can be completed within 4 hours. Basically, the 'Big Deal' coupon is worthless if the estimate is so high that it nullifies the coupon's savings. Maybe the owner of Dr. Sweep should focus more on making his customers happy instead of trying to rapidly increase his customer base through false incentives. I was contacted the next day by the Dr. Sweep office asking if I would like to schedule the masonry work based on the estimate. I promptly told them no. I contacted Angie's List support, explained the situation with Dr. Sweep, and they provided a remedy. Subsequently, I have engaged a different brick repair company for the same work. They provided an estimate that was below the $399 I would have ended up paying for the Dr. Sweep 'Big Deal'.
Description of Work: I purchased an Angie's Big Deal coupon: 4 hours of Masonry work for $99. This companies idea of a 'Big Deal' seems to be a marketing scam.

I have been in my condo just three months and had no experience with gas fireplaces. During the house inspection, a potential problem with one fireplace was identified and a check by a professional was recommended. Dean, from Mr. Sweep, came and was very professional. I asked him to help me understand what I was seeing and to point out the correct way of doing things. Dean was fantastic. He explained everything as he went along, found the easily fixable problem in one fireplace, and made each unit look beautiful. I highly recommend Dean and Mr. Sweep. Note: If you have a gas unit, be sure to request someone with gas experience. The first person scheduled who came out did not have it so I would not let the work start. Instead, I rescheduled and specifically requested someone who with gas experience who could tell me what kind of a problem I had with one unit and what it would take to fix it. I was lucky. It was a quick fix problem that Dean remedied. The slightly lower rating as because of the need to reschedule and wait a longer period of time to get the properly trained person, even though I mentioned the first time that I had gas fireplaces with a potential problem.
Description of Work: Two gas fireplaces had a maintenance check and overall cleanup. One unit needed the gas line unclogged. Both needed a realignment of gas lines for better working and reachability. Some new rocks, vermiculite, and other materials were added as needed.

For the service provided, I would expect them to charge in the $75 range. They technician that did the work did a good job but I just felt it was a little overpriced.

From the very beginning I didn’t feel comfortable with the Big Deal from the start as the technician kept having to call his boss for seemingly obvious things, such as being told that if there are two fireplaces, there would be two chimneys. He also said that the Deal only covered one chimney and didn’t do anything with the second one. Later, however, I received a phone call from the office asking for payment for the 2nd chimney even though they didn’t do anything with it.

After I purchased the deal through Angie's List, they contacted me to set up an appointment. They were able to come the very next week. The service technician was very professional and efficient. I recently moved in, so he also answered any questions I had about running and maintaining a gas fireplace. It was a very positive experience and I would highly recommend them.

Extremely inconvenient, but did a nice "cleaning job". Not worth $100.
Description of Work: Angie coupon - gas log tune-up $99 1st attempt - was given a 4 hour window for appointment. a half hour after that window expired I received a call saying the truck broke down and we would have to reschedule. 2nd attempt - was given a 3 hour window. 1/2 hour before the window expired, received a phone call, service tech had family issue, I could wait serveral more hours while they tried to find another tech, or.... we could reschedule 3rd attempt - tech arrived 1/2 hour into the 3 hour window (1st good news), was efficient and courteous, did a nice clean up of the logs, added new material under logs, restacked. Completed inspection of chimney. I have a problem with the logs burning "rich" and creating soot. Asked for recommendations during my gas log tune-up, but did not receive any.

I purchased the package on Angie's List, and they called to remind me that I had purchased their services and set up the appointment. I did reschedule the 1st appt due to wanting it later in the fall. No problem.
Description of Work: They arrived during the day and cleaned out gutters. Since I cannot go up on the roof and evaluate their work, but did see the glop removed that fell behind our bushes, I assume they did a complete job. Super easy appointment. Didn't have to be home. Even had to reschedule with no problem at all.

First saw an ad on Angie's list for half price gas log tune up and 26 point inspection. Scheduling appointment was very quick and easy but typical 4 hour window for appointment. of course he called on his way over just at the end of his "window. The guy at the door certainly looked like he had been cleaning fireplaces all day but he did have paper booties over work boots. I took him to the fireplace and his first comment was "I have never seen one of these before." Unit is a direct vent Heat & Glo This is an international company with several sales locations in the Detroit area. Our unit is 10 or 12 years old so not something new to the market. unit. The front is sealed and it uses outside air for combustion and exhaust without the loss of room air. First he could not get the front glass off and I had to explain how to do it, next he starts trying to take the logs apart but the log set is a one piece unit that just lifts out. Next he pulls out a hand wisk broom and dust pan and explains his vacuum had flown out the back of his truck the day before. Using a hand broom to remove soot is a never ending task because the broom just spreads the soot around. After removing the rock and embers he takes out several bags and spread new rock and embers and then tries to put the door back after spraying it with windex and wiping it off. Again I had to show him how to replace the door he had just taken off. Luckily I have done this myself and knew what to do. Notice I did not say anything about a 26 point inspection. One other review mentioned checking pilot and gas flow, if you give him credit for seeing that the pilot was on when he started and still on when he finished ....... as he was putting his "tools" (three buckets, broom and dust pan, paper towel and windex) away I said shouldn't we turn it on and try it before you finish up? When I did he saw the stuff he had spread was blocking the gas vents and the door had to come off again. Total time in the door to out the driveway was 45 minutes and his comment was I didn't expect to be here that long.
Description of Work: Gas fireplace log set "tune up". Tech brought three buckets and a tarp. After tarp was placed on hearth, fireplace door was removed, broom and dust pan used to remove rock and embers used to decorate around log set. new rock and embers placed around logs and door replaced.

Overall, we were pleased with the work. The mason who performed the work did an excellent job. The replacement bricks were very well-matched to the rest of the house. The bricks and mortar were evenly placed. The work site was well-maintained on the two days they were there. Everything was cleaned up well at the end of the job.
Description of Work: Bricks were crumbling on the chimney and back of the house because of cracks in mortar. The chimney was in very bad condition. We only repaired the chimney, and replaced a few bricks at the back of the house. They took the bricks around the chimney down to the roof line. They used the unbroken bricks and brought in new matching bricks to rebuild the chimney. They were able to keep the old chimney cap and re-use it.

One hour doesn't cover much when you are doing a tuckpoint job. I felt that because it was a pre-paid special, they didn't put much effort into the job. They were already paid. The work was kind of sloppy and didn't look professional. I truly got $99.00 worth of tuckpoint for one hour.
Description of Work: I requested tuckpoint on the front porch. I wanted a price to continue other areas of the house and asked for a quote. The price was $62.00 per hour for one worker sand 150.00 for two. Each brick takes approximately 15 minutes. I stayed with the $99.00 special which consisted of two workers= 1 hour of tuckpoint, 1 worker= 2 hours. I had two.
