Background:
· I asked Metro to replace my timer box because the company I had been working with previously was not responding to my numerous calls for service.
· Important to note, my sprinkler system had been working properly up to this point except for the timer box.
· When I called Metro to schedule what would be the first visit, I asked to have my Rain-Bird timer box replaced.
· Ricky got on the phone and said no, don’t go with Rain-Bird, go with Hunter instead.
· I said fine.
First visit (Ricky & John):
· They removed the old box and hooked up the new box.
· My system has 5 zones: 2 in the front yard, 3 in the back (2 stations)
· They were able to get the front 2 zones working, but couldn’t get the back 3 working.
· Ricky concluded that the wire running from the timer box to the backyard station was broke, he had to either troubleshoot the existing line or run a new one. I was dubious about this (remember, my system was working fine prior to this), but at this stage I just wanted my sprinklers running. Asked which would be cheaper, he said run a new line. So I said run a new line then.
o He didn’t have sufficient wire with him, I had to schedule another visit.
o Ricky said he would not charge for a service call for the next visit.
o I wrote Ricky a check for the visit, approx. $250.
Second visit (Mark & Chad):
· Prior to the second visit, I attempted to run the front 2 zones, but they would not work.
· After arriving, Chad found and repaired a 'broken wire' that was connecting the back station to the front station and got the front 2 zones working again.
· Chad installed a new valve box for me at the front station (that I purchased separately on my own).
· Mark, meanwhile, could not get back zones to work; he installed new valves, solenoids, and wire, and still could not get back three zones to work.
o At this stage, I suggested perhaps it was a bad box.
o Mark agreed, but said he didn’t bring another 6-zone box with him, so I had to schedule yet another call.
. Mark hands me an invoice for over $350.
· At this stage, I’m pretty angry. I tell Mark I want to talk with someone at Metro first before I pay anything at all for this visit.
Third visit (Brett & Angel):
· Brett asks me to recap the first two visits, which I do in full detail.
· Brett and Angel look at the backyard station wiring for the back three zones and within 5 minutes say (and this is a quote), “well, it helps if you connect the wires correctly.”
· Within 5 minutes, all 5 zones are running correctly, though the wiring for zones 3 and 5 were mixed up. When I mentioned this, Brett said "it's working, I don't want to mess with it anymore." After all this, I had to agree: I didn't want them working on it anymore, either.
· Brett writes up an invoice for $55, and I write him a check.
· One week later, I discover that a new wire that was installed, connecting my backyard station to the front yard station, was left draped over my chain-link fence. No attempt was made at concealing it, much less burying it.
In conclusion:
· I paid for the first visit in full, including the new box.
· I paid for the third visit in full.
· Based on everything that happened, and the fact that my system was running before the new box was installed, there is nothing that can prove to me that my valves, solenoid, and wiring needed replacing, or that the labor involved to do so was necessary.
. Leaving wires draped over fencing displays a lack of professionalism.
. Even though my sprinklers are now all functioning correctly, the zone configuration is now different, and as a result I am not 100% satisfied.
. Chris, Metro's manager, has now reached out to me; my guess is to discuss the invoice for the second visit.
We will see how the discussion with Chris turns out; I have absolutely no intention of paying the full amount of the second invoice. Fact is, after three service calls and the questionable/forced replacement of equipment that was functioning properly to begin with, I think it would be fair to call things even at this point.
Regardless of the outcome, I will not be contacting this company again for service, and cannot recommend them for any lawn sprinkler services. The workers were nice enough, understanding enough, and punctual, but racking up a $650 bill for sloppy work over three visits - when it should have been a one-visit, $250 job to start with - is just simply above and beyond.
We had a misunderstanding on the price of the controller from info from one of the office staff. - they made it right.
The installation went well as usual. They were very professional.
