We discussed that pricing was $40 per hour for two maids. This is a little below going market rate so I repeated it back to her to confirm. On the day of the cleaning I had an emergency and was at the dentist. Instead of any one calling me, they just broke in to my house instead and started cleaning. I explained to them that they should have called me because I was literally a block away, and they said npbody told them I was a new customer. Anyways, what really got them fired was that we started discussing price and they said they were told to charge me $80 per hour. When I explained that it was double the price quoted one of them even commented that this happened all the time where customers were given one price then charged another. They said it was their "OTO" price, to which I explained that we were more than ready to hire regularly once we saw the quality of work and the price had been agreed upon of $40 per hour. They called the owner, who never bothered to call and discuss with me. She knew what she did! Most people would have allowed the cleaning to be completed or not brought up price before it was time to pay, but I have seen the old bait and switch before. I fired them and paid $60 for the one hour they cleaned, which is a split between our agreed upon price and the random number they came up with on a whim. I would not only not recommend this company, but I have decided to never hire another maid service I found online after being given the bait and switch by another company also (at least in their case the price hike was discussed after the first few cleanings). Yes, I am wary of any companies with such lack of integrity even being trusted to have access to my home and be around my family. Seriously question our safety after this experience.

They have probably about two years at least. Overall they're very constant reminding me when they're coming, they're very transparent, they're very accommodating when I called them up and say I have to switch schedule or anything.

We used the service for about a year and recently moved. The cleaning for the most part had been good, but since we moved, we had been unhappy with the quality compared to our other home. I asked about a reschedule one day since the girls were late and let him know that I had been unhappy with the service. Jim let me know there were only two girls instead of three and they were running behind. I again let him know that I was unhappy that I was not told they were late and that I had guests coming and that my whole family and dogs were home now. Jim told me that this was not the first time he had to "deal" with me and that I had given him late notice about stopping the service for the summer. He was quite irritated and then proceeded to "fire" me and told me we were terminated and he did not want our service. He was extremely rude and unprofessional. I have never been treated so poorly from a business owner. I let him know that I would spread the word about his professionalism and hope that anyone looking for a cleaning service would never choose such an incompetent and ill mannered company! Shame on Jim Miller for such disrespect!

The Cleaning Authority performed house cleaning as stated in the contract. The two ladies were focused and worked as a team. They impressed my 94 year old mother-in-law who had cleaning services all her life, She was most impressed with the cleaning authority when they cleaned the kitchen floor and baseboards on their hands and knees.(who does that anymore!). We liked the service and we plan to keep them every other week.

Called to make an appointment, Stephanie answered the phone. I was shot down before I could even request what I needed. Not friendly. First impressions are lasting. Was told I could not get an appointment unless I agreed to ongoing service. I stated that how would I know if I wanted returning service if I haven't had one service..... Was cut off. Response from The Cleaning Authority
We are located in Sylvan Lake and as a franchise, we are restricted by our territory. Our service area consists of West Bloomfield, Farmington Hills, Bloomfield Hills, Bingham Farms, Franklin, Beverly Hills, Commerce and Walled Lake. If (Member name removed) called our call center for an estimate, the first question that would have been asked is what zip code they live in and if the zip code is outside our territory, they would have been told they were handled by a different office or that we do not service that area. We do not currently have an office that handles the Detroit area, so (Member name removed) would have been told that we could not service them.

We have been using Cleaning Authority for about 2 months now, while our house has been on the market. From initial phone call they have been very pleasant and helpful. James, the owner came to our house the next day to give us an estimate on how much the deep cleaning would be, and how much it would cost thereafter. His estimate was very reasonable for the scope of work they were doing. Our house is around 1,600 sq. ft., with 3 bedrooms and 2 bath, and the initial deep cleaning took them about 4 and a half hours. They did a fantastic job, and were very thorough!! We then decided to have them come every other Friday until the house was sold. It is so satisfying and comforting to come home to a clean house. Our cleaning ladies (there’s always 2 of them), are friendly and polite and very efficient. After the initial deep cleaning, it takes them about two hours to clean the house. It is well worth the money to have the house maintained when we just don’t have the time to do it ourselves. I would highly recommend Cleaning Authority to anyone!!!

I have been using the services of The Cleaning Authority for almost one year. My long-time housecleaner quit working suddenly and I was expecting house guests. I contacted another company and informed them of the situation. They charged me $325 and only cleaned half the house, neglecting to clean the guest room and bathroom! I immediately contacted Jim from The Cleaning Authority and he graciously worked my house into his schedule in time to have my house ready. Since then, I have been enjoying the services of The Cleaning Authority. I started out every two weeks, but quickly changed to every week. My previous housekeeper took around five hours and so It took too much out of my schedule to have her come every week. The girls from The Cleaning Authority take about 2 hours to clean my whole house! The girls who come to clean are very polite, accommodating, and thorough. They are quiet and don't spend time talking to each other. They just concentrate on getting the job done efficiently. At the same time, they are incredibly friendly. They bond with my kids, remember life events, and always leave a nice note! I look forward to coming home and having a list of what was done and what to expect next week. I have been so satisfied with this service that I have recommended it to my mother and my best friend. They have each been using Jim's service for almost one year. My mom constantly thanks me for recommending The Cleaning Authority to her. My best friend left a different company which had been servicing her for several years because of my satisfaction. My mom has the bimonthly service and my friend has the weekly service. They have a different team, but have the same level of service. I have also been quite impressed with the professionalism and organization of the owner. I constantly call Jim to change the schedule during times when I am going out of town or when my kids have a field trip. He answers my messages within the day and is always able to accommodate my requests. He schedules out in three month periods, so I am able to plan my schedule months in advance. My experience has been that when someone is satisfied, they usually don't take the time to review a service. It is only when they want to complain that they look for a sounding board. That is why it was so important for me to express my own immense and incredible satisfaction. I am always so impressed with the job and I take the time to let the girls know how much I appreciate them coming. I give The Cleaning Authority an A+++

When we questioned Jim over some missing jewelry it was met with denial and told us that the jewelry was not worth that much and if we had a problem to call the police. He also asked that we look in drawers, under furniture, all over in the hope that we find the jewelry. I tore the bedroom apart did a third time - no luck. Jim was adamant that we were wasting his time as he had to go pick up his children and the value of the jewelry did not justify his time. I am paraphrasing a two phone call conversation. We were not accusing, we were informing Jim that we were no longer comfortable with our security. We asked that a new team member be assigned to the woman we have had over the 7 year period. We were told that the team stays in tact and that he was unwilling to provide a new team or a new team member. Since we could no longer trust our home to this office - I informed them that we would be going in another direction. We will not be using the Cleaning Authority for any of our cleaning needs.

Response from The Cleaning Authority
As the owner of the Cleaning Authority, please allow me to share my side of the story. Mr. Obey contacted me via phone to discuss two Harley Davidson lapel pins with a total combined value of $7 that were missing. I spent 30 minutes on the phone with him as he told me that they knew exactly where the pins were and that my employee stole them. I asked him if it was possible since they were so small if they got knocked in a drawer, knocked behind the dresser, picked up in clothing that was set on the dresser, many easily possible explanations of what may have happened to the pins. Mr. Obey was adamant that they were not misplaced, that my employee stole them. The team that cleaned their home was comprised of two individuals, one of the teammates has worked for the company for seven years and cleaned their home consistently for the last five years or so, the other teammate has worked for the company for six months at the time the items were reported missing. Mr. Obey said he knew my long term employee did not take the items, he knew that my employee that had only been with the company for six months had taken the pins. I told him I would speak to both of the employees individually the next day and follow up with him the next evening. I talked to both employees individually the following day. I talked to the six month employee first and she denied any knowledge of the missing pins. I then spoke to my long term employee next; not only did my long term employee deny any knowledge of the missing pins, she told me a story about how her current partner (the six month employee) found a gold watch pushed into the back of a chair at the Obey's home a couple of months earlier that she returned to Mr. Obey. Apparently it was an item that Mrs. Obey was missing for a while and I am quite sure it had a value of more than $7. I contacted Mr. Obey back the following evening at 5:45 PM to let him know about my conversation with my two employees and he insisted that he call his wife so we could have a three way conversation about the missing pins. I began by telling them both that my employees both denied any knowledge of the pins and once again asked if they simply could have been misplaced. My assertion that the pins were misplaced was met with quite a bit of hostility and they both said they knew my long term employee didn't do it and Mr. Obey continued to state that my six month employee did it for sure. They then asked if my long term employee could clean their house by herself, without my six month employee and they would continue service. I explained that we work in teams of two and I was not willing to switch the team and have my long term employee clean by herself to appease one client. At this point I brought up the story about the gold watch that my six month employee found at their house and returned to Mr. Obey. Mrs. Obey was surprised to hear that my employee was the one that found the gold watch because Mr. Obey did not tell her that my employee found the watch, he took the credit himself. I reasoned that if my employee was truly a thief, why would she return an item like the gold watch, but risk her job to steal two lapel pins valued at $7. His response was that stupid people do stupid things. I then started asking once again if it was possible that the items were simply misplaced in their house because customers have called in the past to say something was missing, only to find the items days later, before we ever came back for another clean and they had to call back to say they found the item. At that point, Mrs. Obey said she knew what I was talking about because years earlier, when she was living in a different house before she was with Mr. Obey and we were the cleaning company, she had called to say she was missing an item that she later found before we came back again. I did not recall the originally, but with that in mind I then asked since Mrs. Obey had claimed an item was missing years earlier and she found the item herself and the fact that my employee had returned a gold watch that was lost, it seemed reasonable that the missing pins were simply misplaced and I asked if they could look around again. Mr. Obey got extremely upset at this point and yelled at me that I was asking him to do more work to find the missing items. This was now 45 minutes into our second conversation about the two missing lapel pins after I spent 30 minutes on the phone with Mr. Obey the day before and after giving all the explanations I could and I did not take kindly to Mr. Obey's continued outbursts and I did tell them I had to pickup my three kids from school as I was supposed to be there shortly after 6 PM and it was now 6:30 PM, I told them if they wanted to continue to pursue the missing pins, their next step would be to contact the police and I would cooperate with the police in whatever ways necessary. Let me be very clear, the Obeys did not term our service because they were supposedly missing two lapel pins valued at $7, they termed our service because I would not allow the team to be split and to have my long term employee clean their house by herself. As an update, both of the two employees from the team continue to work together and they have not had any reports of missing items from the houses they clean in the six months they have worked together prior to this incident or the four months since the date of this report.

I have been very happy for Cleaning Authority. They are punctual and come whenever they are scheduled. I generally check before the team leaves to make sure everything is done as promised. If somet6hing is left undone, I ask the team to do it before they leave. There has never been a problem with this. The rotate the areas of my house for a thorough clean so that attention is paid to different rooms at different times.

Response from The Cleaning Authority
My name is Jim Miller and I am the owner of the Cleaning Authority and I would like to take the opportunity to respond to the review posted by Member. My first concern with the way Member handled her dissatisfaction with our service was that her posting on Angie’s List was the first time I was made aware of the fact that she had any concerns at all. Member sent me an email on September 9th to terminate our services stating “We wish to discontinue our weekly cleaning services with The Cleaning Authority, effective immediately.” There was no other explanation, simply a request to be removed from the cleaning schedule. As a business owner and a homeowner myself, if I ever have an issue with someone that is providing a service to me at my business or my home, I will call them to talk about it to see if it can be resolved and if the problem is not corrected at that point, I would then terminate my relationship with that company. I guess everyone handles their own personal business differently, but I believe most businesses would like to know if there is an issue so they at least have an opportunity to correct it and if it wasn’t corrected at that point the customer could terminate their service with that company or provide feedback on a site such as Angie’s List. Maybe Angie’s List could add a question to the review section if a customer is dissatisfied such as “Did you try to resolve the issue with the business owner first?” After receiving notification from Angie’s List that our company had a new review on their site and reading Member’s feedback, I decided to give her a call to try and understand the issues she was having with our service. I felt comfortable calling her since I met her in person at the estimate, I had talked to her on the phone after our clean on May 10th because she called to compliment the team and say that was the best clean she had ever had and I also talked to her a couple of other times about scheduling. Member answered my call and she was very pleasant and we discussed the issues she had with our service. The biggest issue based on our conversation was that she felt the individuals that cleaned her home were too friendly and talkative, she stated thy shared too much personal information with her. I agree that our employees should always be nice and friendly, but their conversations should focus on the job at hand or small talk, they should never go into personal information. Based on the feedback my team gave me after discussing this issue, Member knew too much about their personal lives and my team knew too much about her personal life, so it seems both parties were sharing too much information. My teams’ comfort with Member then led to the second issue, which was the issue that caused Member to terminate our service and post her feedback on Angie’s List. The team did their scheduled clean on September 6th and left Member a note that they could not clean the basement because they ran out of time. The basement is an area to be cleaned each time and we did not clean Member’s home by the hour, the basement was to be cleaned each time. Member was very upset that we did not clean the basement and in her opinion we didn’t do it because she said the employees felt like they were such good friends with her that we could simply decide when not to clean an area if we decided we didn’t want to do it or if we ran out of time. In other words, she felt like my employees were taking advantage of her. I agreed with Member that the basement should have been cleaned each time and that it did not matter how long we had already been there, it should have been cleaned. Member said she should only have to pay for half of the clean since we did not clean the basement and I agreed. I then offered to Member a free clean with a new team if she would like to switch teams and continue with our service and she said she would like to think about it. I have not heard back from her and I did try to contact her again to see if she would like to take me up on my offer, but she did not respond, so I assume she did not. I could have ended my response after the last paragraph, but I feel the need to explain my employees’ decision making and to offer one more piece of information. After talking to Member and finding out why she had terminated our service, I asked the team why they had not cleaned the basement and why they would leave a note saying we ran out of time. The team indicated that Member’s home was not prepared to be cleaned on September 6th and this was a common problem at her home. It is our company’s standard policy to request a clutter free environment to clean, but unfortunately that was not provided on September 6th. My team spent over an hour for two individuals picking up her main floor so we could clean it and they said the basement was even worse. They admitted to leaving the note saying they ran out of time because our normal clean at Member’s home took two people two hours each and it had already taken them that long just to pickup and clean the main floor and it would have taken at least that long to clean the basement. I explained to the team that a better way to have handled the situation was to have cleaned what we could have reasonably in the basement and left a note explaining that we were limited in the basement because of the condition it was in when we arrived. I understand why Member was upset about the basement and how she could have thought we were taking advantage of her, but the truth was that the house was not prepared for us to clean and we cannot get into a habit of picking up every house we clean otherwise the situation will continue to get worse and we will not be able to clean those types of homes without raising their prices or disappointing them because we did not do everything they would have liked us to do. The last piece of information about Member which I just recently found out about is that she was asking my employees to clean for her on the side and she would just pay them directly. My employee did not want to tell me about it, because they knew how upset I would have gotten, but she said Member was not happy when she told her it was a conflict and she could lose her job for that and that was right before she terminated our service. I find it interesting that Member goes on record saying how we are unprofessional, yet has the audacity to ask one of my employees to work for her on the side, I would call that extremely hypocritical.

The team does a good job in a house that's big enough and inhabited by 2 cats, 2 dogs and 2 people (most of the time). I feel that having the work done once monthly is cost effective and affordable for me. I trust the team to follow my special instructions when I have any. When I've needed to alter the schedule, TCA has been willing and able to accommodate those changes. (I only assign a B to overall and quality, because no one in my experience cleans your house the way you'd clean it in a perfect world, but who has time or wants to be cleaning ALL THE TIME!?)

I recently re-hired this company so that they have cleaned for me bi-weekly on three occasions. At no time did they empty the wastebaskets. They cleaned the hard wood floors but neglected to remove some gooey spots obviously tracked into the house and very obvious to see. Finally, I caught one employee using a heavy duty vacuum cleaner on my expensive oriental rug, running the vacuum over the fringe! I believe that in the past they ruined the fringe on another rug, but i cannot absolutely prove it. When I spoke to the owner, he never apologized nor offered a refund or discount or re-clean. I would never use them again!

Response from The Cleaning Authority
My name is Jim Miller and I am the local owner of The Cleaning Authority that serviced this member. I was not aware of her complaint on Angie's List until I signed up as a new member in August 2011. Upon reading her complaint, I decided to write her directly to address her concerns before posting anything in response on Angie's List. I have never received a response from her, so I will now post a copy of the letter that was written to her about her service experience with our company. August 26, 2011 Member, I wanted to write this letter because I was surprised and disappointed to find the enclosed report you wrote on Angie’s List about our company. I also shared it with both Katie and Stacie, who as you know cleaned your home for a very long time and they were both equally surprised. I understand that you were very upset about the last incident at your home when my employee vacuumed close to the fringe of your oriental rug with our upright vacuum cleaner. I also remember and agreed with you that our team leader should not have said to you she would add the note to the job ticket not to do that again. I remember saying several times on the phone when you called that I believe my employee panicked when you confronted her about why the new employee vacuumed close to the fringe and she said the first thing that came to her mind. I agreed with you 100% that we should never vacuum over fringe or even close to fringe with a vacuum that has a beater bar and after talking to you, I thought I had resolved the issue to your satisfaction. I did not offer a credit to you because I always try to fix a problem versus simply throwing money at it in an attempt to soothe a customer’s frustration about a situation. My employee made a mistake that I discussed with the team after I was made aware of it and we tried to correct the problem. The mistake was an innocent mistake and she did not know otherwise and that is my fault. The employee was not fired, but I talked to her about the importance of using the correct vacuum in the correct areas. I believe her mistake was not a conscious decision or a “shortcut”, so that is why she was not reprimanded more severely. I was disappointed when your husband called back later that week to terminate your service, but I obviously knew that you were very upset about the incident with your oriental rug. We work very hard to run a good business and to do things the right way and over the seven years we cleaned your home, I always thought we had a good rapport so I would simply ask, do you think your posting truly reflects your opinion of the 86 cleans our company did for you in the seven years we serviced your home and the way I always treated you when we talked on the phone or when I met you in person?

The thing I liked is they came when they said they would every time. I have to say that the quality of the cleaning varied depending on which "team" did the work. Sometimes the "team" would change and so would the cleaning. They did not clean very thoroughly. There were cobwebs on the ceiling and in the corners of the room. The wood floors alway looked nice until you looked around the edges of the main area of the floor. These were left uncleaned. I called Jim, the owner, when I was not happy with the work and he said it would be taken care of. The results of this were inconsistent. Sometimes things would improve, mostly not. I finally got tired of calling and pointing out the things that weren't getting properly cleaned. If I left a not for the "team" then these things were done one time, but not consistently after that.
Description of Work: I had this company clean my house off and on for several years.
