Rich approached the estimate more like an engineer than a salesman, which gave me the confidence to move forward with Coastal. Though they are not cheap, they know what they're doing. The lead carpenter Tim was able to work through several problems we uncovered along the way. Once they started they worked continuously and finished on time. I would recommend them if your job is complicated, requires custom carpentry, or if you're using quality materials that need special care.

Ron our site manager responded quickly to any questions or concerns we had about the project. Chris, who did the majority of the work was very professional and considerate. He was on time every morning and if he wasn't coming out that day he called to let us know. We have not had any issues with the work that was done and are very happy with the addition. We would definitely use Coastal Builders again.

Description of Work: Construction of a single-car carport and a two-car garage. They started when they said they would and worked steadily until the job was done. They have a good team of subcontractors for electrical and masonry. Everyone worked with me to ensure we all understood what was being done. Coastal was very receptive to ideas I had for saving money. For example, I asked if T1-11 siding could be used instead of vinyl on the garage. It could and ended up saving significant money in installation costs. They are a good company to work with.
This was my second contract with this builder. The service was great.

Rich came out to provide estimate. After we agreed to go with them, he returned with his chief carpenter and supervisor. They discussed with us all aspects of the job. The began on time and worked straight through all day with only a break for lunch. Bobbie did most of the work. Plumbing and electrical work handled by sub-contractors. Bobbie cleaned up everyday when he was finished. It now looks great!
Description of Work: Remodeled master bathroom; gutted shower; removed all tile including floor; installed new sub-floor, toilet, sinks, fixtures, etc.

Rich Campbel came out to give us an estimate on our remodeling job and out of the 3 companies we contacted, he had the best ideas and price. Coastal's staff came out and started work and while it took longer than I anticipated, the workers cleaned up after the work every day and left the room spotless. Payments were broken down in 4 separate payments and we paied as the work progressed and milestones were established. They had to build out the wall, break the foundation concrete to properly lay drain pipes for the new bath shower and repositioning the toilet. We personally went to Home Depot and purchased the vanity/lights/faucets and towel racks and things. Their contract plumber brought in the shower and the toilet as part of the flat rate package. WHich is too bad because we would have paid more for better models other than the builder grade. There are minor things that still nags me, which is few nail holes that are bulging out of the wall, sink drain gargles when water drains (Poor venting), and really cheap model of shower head... but all in all we are happy with the work they did. We have a functioning bathroom. We will look to use them again in the future home remodeling.

When they first did the work, we were really impressed. They were prompt, did everything we asked and put up barriers to keep the rest of the house from getting debris all over. We wanted double-paned Anderson hinged windows installed and they talked us into another kind (Hood, which subsequently went out of business). They said that they were better for the same cost. We said okay and replaced all the windows in the house to match the 5 new ones installed in the addition. We also replaced the swing door in our family room to match the one in the addition. For the basement, they moved an existing sliding door out. They gave us a name of someone to obtain and install flooring in the new part of the basement and dining room. We contacted then and had carpet installed in the basement and hard wood flooring in the dinning room. Initially we were very pleased with everything. Fast forward a couple of years. Upstairs in the bedroom, where the addition was installed, were cracks in the wall. In addition, 2 of the 3 doors they installed leaked, one so bad that it ruined our hard wood floors and stained the ceiling in the basement. It was hard to tell that there was a leak until after the damage was done. Of course, by this time, the warranty was up. One of the octagon windows cracked and I wanted to get them replaced (mid-2010). I could have just replaced the glass, but the window frame (wood) was separating from itself (you could see outside through the joints). I decided to get vinyl windows, since I would not have to worry about every painting them. I had a hard time getting the replacement windows due to the size, so I contacted Coastal (since they originally installed them). They came out right away. I explained what I wanted. I also showed them the damage due to the doors leaking. They explained that the doors were defective and the only thing they would do is caulk, if I choose them to replace my windows. I asked for an estimate. They never got back to me. After I called a couple of times, got promises and the run-around, I was told it would be too hard to find replacement windows and the job ?wasn?t big enough for them? to bother with. I found out later that all the windows they installed were ?builder grade? (not what I paid for). The octagon windows were smaller than standard size (about an inch or 2), which required the company that replaced the windows to cut into the studs. In addition, several of the windows ended up leaking in between the panes and have permanent discoloration in the glass (that looks like they are dirty when they are not). I would not use Coastal builders again nor would I recommend them.
Description of Work: We had a 3 story addition put on our house, replaced all the windows and replaced the sliding glass door to a swing door.

Dear (removed member name), We appreciate your past business and enjoyed working with you to design and build the addition to your home. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience you’ve suffered from the manufacturer’s faulty windows and doors that were installed in your home. As you may know, many firms went out of business during the tougher years of the recession, including Hurd. Yet, prior to their company folding due to economic issues, they maintained an excellent reputation. As your work was out of warranty at the time of your call, we were not able to provide repairs without additional costs. We apologize if you were given the impression that your job was “too small” for us. We work carefully to service every call that comes in – especially from past clients. Sincerely, Rich Campbell

We had 4 contractors come for estimates. Amazingly only 2 actually gave us an estimate. Coastal was definitely the most professional of the 4 right from the start. They were not overwhelmed by the project at all whereas the other 3 contractors didn't seem to really know where to even start. The sales representative listened to our ideas about what we were looking for and gave us a layout blueprint which we reviewed a few times before deciding on the final layout. The lead carpenter was here pretty much right at 7 a.m. every day so we could touch base before we left for work. He was very understanding of our questions as the project went on and was very careful to ask us if we wanted something done a certain way before he did it. We made some changes along the course of the project and he was able to easily adapt and usually came up with a better solution than we had considered. We even changed the complete layout of 2 of the rooms, switching the bedroom for the common room (on the day he was to frame out the bedroom!) and he was able to make the switch without any problem or hassle whatsoever. He also made a great suggestion on moving some of our HVAC units which really opened up a lot of space in one of the rooms which was going to be too cramped otherwise. The subs all seemed to be good but it was nice because we just dealt with the lead carpenter on almost all issues. For example, we noticed some issues with 2 of the lights that shared a switch and he relayed the concern to the electrician and it was taken care of right away. We're just waiting for the bathroom vanity to be delivered and the pool table to be moved to a different room and for some final touches for the project to be completed. The final cost was slightly higher than the estimate because we chose to go with recessed lighting, we had the electrician do some other small jobs for us like replacing the main floor door bell and adding one to the basement, and some other small details like upgrading the door handles. Coastal was very careful to always let us know if something was going to be different from the estimate before they went ahead. They don't do floors or the painting but gave some good referrals. The lead carpenter got one of their painting referrals to prep/prime all the walls/ceiling/trim for us ($1500) while Coastal was still on the job so we didn't have to set something up separate. It wasn't always clear exactly when we needed to be doing certain things, such as picking out tile, vanity cabinets. For example, the lead carpenter was a little surprised we hadn't picked out some things before he started working which we didn't know we should have done. However, as with everything else for the project it was not a big deal and we just did things as we went along.
Description of Work: Finished our basement. We had an essentially completely unfinished basement. Coastal did all the walls and ceiling framing and had subs for the electric, plumbing, and drywalling. The basement is approximately 1400 square feet and they created 4 rooms and a bathroom.

From the beginning to the end, this company was nothing but professional, informative, very prompt, and did an excellent job. The additions are on top of each other, the living room and bathroom above with the garage below. I wouldn t hesitate to refer this contractor to anyone and I am really glad we decided to use them in the end.
Description of Work: This company added two brand new additions to the back of our home, extending the space to a total of 3000 square feet. They also put in a new porch, bathroom, and closet. This took a total of 2 months to complete. When they finally left, they took all the garbage with them.
