It went perfectly. (5 stars / A+++) Tony (and his crew) worked seamlessly with my pool company - despite my pool company shifting and moving the schedule for when landscaping could start several times. When we were finally ready for Continental Landscaping to get started, we had rain (almost every other day for a week), occasional freezing temperatures - and yet they showed up and found ways to get work done, on-time and at the contracted price. They did so much (great) work it's hard to summarize it all but here's a brief recap - DESIGN: I had a rough idea of what I thought I wanted, but Tony came out and talked with me to understand what I was actually aiming to do, what my budget was, and what kinds of materials/designs appealed to me. During our initial meeting, we talked for over an hour and covered everything from elevation changes, drainage, concerns I had... you name it - we discussed it. A couple days later, Tony presented quote that was within my budget and clearly identified what he would do. After accepting the quote, Tony developed a scale CAD that encompassed everything we had discussed. The big take away from this was that everything we discussed was taken seriously, accounted for, and not glossed over. Tony's pricing was fair and transparent and in hindsight, for the quality of the workmanship that I received - a true bargain. PATIO: Tony built a multi-tiered paver patio with a grilling area and lounging/dining area that wrapped around our pool. His crew meticulously measured and accounted for grading at all phases of the construction. The stairs that lead from my backdoor to the upper tier were built by excavating a massive amount of material, back-filling with compacted stone, pouring a substantial concrete pad... all before a single paver was ever laid. The rest of the patio was carefully designed and installed around a gas pipes, pool piping, electrical lines, coping tiles, and flower beds. Tony and his crew met or exceeded ICPI standards at all phases of the project. When the design needed to be adjusted to account for additional grading challenges or aesthetics - they did it - often times by telling me what they were going to do to fix a problem after they had already identified it and devised a great solution. One of the most impressive parts was that all of these "little" changes (i.e. a small retaining wall to hold back dirt at a flower bed, a small tapering wall to account for my yard slope, etc.), there was never a surcharge. Let me repeat that last part because it's so rare it's worth repeating.... They made their great design better - without me needing to ask - and they didn't ask me to pay extra fees. This is the mark of a truly professional company that cares about doing the job right. SOD: The only thing I've ever successfully grown is crabgrass, nutsedge weed, and clover, so when it came time for sod, I was excited. Mother-nature however, had other plans. Mainly rain, lots of rain. Despite soggy ground, and afternoon showers, his crew dug up/scraped my entire yard - mostly by hand - and then brought in quality topsoil... by wheelbarrow. At any given moment, there were roughly 4 wheelbarrows shuttling between my front yard (where the material was in their truck) and backyard (where the material had to go). While 2 guys spread the soil - by hand (rake), while another guy stayed at the truck to shovel material. Bear in mind, this was all taking place while my yard was essentially a muck-pit of soggy, rain-soaked dirt that if you stood still for a couple seconds, you'd sink up to your ankles. They spent a full 2+ days scraping weeds up and hauling in dirt before they laid the sod. The sod was laid so tightly (which is how it's supposed to be done) that I literally couldn't find seams when they were done. They also did a great job shaping/cutting the sod so that it contoured perfectly to the "free-form" pool shape. MULCH: Tony called me near the end of the project to discuss some ideas he had to nicely finish off the job and give my backyard a completed/finished look. One of the major things was applying a heavy fresh layer of topsoil and building some bigger/larger flower beds. If you work with Tony - and I highly recommend you do - you should trust his advice/guidance. I did and I couldn't be happier. He was completely correct - the slight addition to the work, tied everything together and gave me the best looking backyard I've ever had. He also made the suggestion that we do a bed of river rock around our pool equipment. I wasn't home when he called me with that suggestion, but he explained his idea clearly and after working for a couple weeks with Tony - I learned to trust his judgement. When I came home and saw what he had done - I was thrilled. He ripped out the grass that was around my pool equipment, put down geotextile fabric, installed an aluminum retaining strip, and filled the area with river rock. Brilliant. I don't know how I would have ever weed-wacked or mowed grass around my pool equipment... and now, I won't ever have to. It's the little, well thought through details like this that make Tony's work standout from every other landscaper's work I've ever seen. LIGHTING: As part of the patio project, Tony suggested some low voltage lights in the steps and our flower beds. They look awesome. Truly. The lights were installed during the paver portion of the project and are beautiful. The steps are lit up with a discrete light that provides enough light to "not trip on the stairs", but not so much that you are blinded by light if you're trying to enjoy a fire-pit or quiet night under the stars. THE CREW: There is no way Tony could have ever done all this work alone, so the quality and professionalism of his crew is also worth noting. Tony's crew was great. They showed up promptly every morning, and didn't leave in the evening until everything was swept up and clean. Literally, everything. They would sweep my driveway, street, sidewalks, etc., all after working 8+ hours and often as the sun was setting or later. I never had to worry about coming home to a mess or having neighbors complain. Watching Tony's crews work was awesome - there were general between 4-9 guys working **** ** any given day. My pool company's project manager stopped by my backyard one day while I wasn't there and while I was on the phone with him he gladly told me that he has been in this business for a long time, but even he couldn't believe how hard Tony's crew was working and how well their work was coming out. SUMMARY: It's worth noting that ALL of my other contractors (pool, plumber, etc.) and several of my neighbors all knew Tony, his work, and his crews - and everybody - literally everybody had good things to say about him. There was something very reassuring knowing that the company and people you contracted with have been in the business for a while, have built a solid reputation, and truly do great work. I'm looking forward to working with Tony on several additional projects in the spring.
