The job was supposed to take six months, it took over a year. They changed the original quote. They made changes that were never approved. They charged large amouunts of money for changes we didn't authorize. The floors were all crooked and they did a terrible job. It was not a good experience.

We knew that this would not be easy, we were living in the house at the time. We were prepared for inconvenience/disruption. We were prepared for the dirt, traffic, & stress. We were not ready for 1)Delay in permitting. 2)Problem with roof line as drawn. An existing window was not placed correctly on plans, therefore during framing process, we faced an immediate decision... change roof line or be charged more to move the window. Ultimately, the fault of the people who did the drawings, however, we feel it is something the GC should have known. 3)Unsafe conditions. GC left newly dug basement uncovered and our dog fell 8 feet into pit. Fortunately, he recovered, but the GC made no apology or offer to reimburse us. We tried very hard to overlook this, but now seems like an omen we should have paid more attention to. 4)First PM left. Replaced w/ another who left two weeks later. From then on we had no pm. GC said that subs would be taking over project & a PM was not necessary. Although GC was our main contact, he did not communicate many of our wishes to subs- including electrical, railing, kitchen, etc. It took forever to get samples we asked for, & getting pricing was another issue itself. 5)Carpenters changed to detriment of project. One would pick up where someone else left, but had to figure out what had to be done etc. 6)BGE was out to address another issue (power outage) and said gas line is not to code. Our GC should have known. 7) Days passed where no one showed up to work w/no communication to us. It was obvious that this was not a priority job. 8)and most important, change orders were presented AFTER completion of work with a presumed made up cost that despite our repeated requests for itemization remains a mystery. Communication issues: Not responding to emails. Not returning calls promptly. Failing to communicate to subs, not communicating schedule, not showing up without communication, expressly ignoring our wishes about workers in our house when no one was available to be here, etc. Change orders were given to us after the work was done. Change orders had inflated pricing. We asked repeatedly to get prices. No change order was signed. He spent our money without permission without asking or telling us about any add-on cost. The house is still not finished. We have not passed a final inspection and we have much painting to do (walls that were damaged during construction.) There is really so much more.... our kitchen floor is NOT LEVEL! We have had problems with our attic fan, lights, bad wiring (we had to rewire the cable ourselves) -- just almost too much to go into. We signed a contract. We have paid that in full. We have paid for additional work. In our opinion, the job was more complicated than he had anticipated and due to delays (all his fault) it dragged on too long and his profit margin shrank. A classic example of bad management and poor business practice. AND MY FLOOR IS NOT LEVEL!!!!!
