 + -1 moreI am exceedingly pleased with the quality of work done and the way Mark conducts his business. He also mentioned that he uses only genuine Toyota parts, which in his experience last much longer than non-Toyota parts. (He was very surprised that the timing belt had been replaced three times since I have owned the car and said that prior shops probably did not use the Toyota part.) He does not push to have work done and explains in detail his findings so that the customer can make an informed decision. I particularly appreciated the fact that he understood how much I love my old car; he told me that I can expect, given the number of miles I drive, it to last another 10 years. Japanese Auto Service will be my shop as long as it is in business.
Description of Work: I needed to find a new shop for my 1996 Toyota Tercel. This shop is literally down the street from house and, after reading the many favorable reviews on a number of sites, I decided to try out the shop with a relatively minor job, replacing the broken buckle on the passenger side seat belt. I had already bought the part, so "all" that was entailed was replacing the broken part, which involved removing the front seat. I was very satisfied with the cost ($85) and Mark's thorough explanation of what he did. So I decided to have him give the car a thorough examination before the cold weather comes. I brought the car back on the following Monday and showed him all of the receipts for earlier work so he would know what had been done before, especially things like the timing belt, clutch work, brake work, and replacement of the catalytic converter. After an hour he called me back to tell me his findings after he drove the car and examined the brakes. He explained the exact condition of the various parts of the car but left it up to me what I wanted to have done. I told him that I love this car, that it has been the best car I have ever owned, and even if it is 19 years old (I have had it for 16) I want to take the best care of it so it will last as long as possible. So I told him to go ahead with the oil change, overhaul the brakes, and replace all of the struts. Not only did he perform all of this work, he found that someone prior to him had used the wrong pad for the oil drain plug and that the car was leaking oil, unbeknownst to me. He showed me the pitiful condition of the struts, which had absolutely no hydraulics left. He mentioned that the car actually sits an inch higher with the new struts. He also discovered that the radiator coolant was low and added the appropriate amount, at no charge.

 + -1 moreMark is currently my go-to mechanic for my Honda SUV. Conveniently located along US 1, I can easily hop on the bus to work after dropping off my vehicle. I like the way Mark explains what needs to be done and why, and backs up his diagnoses with past experience working on similar vehicles. For example, he told me that for high mileage vehicles (like mine), a transmission fluid change more often than the dealer specified 30K miles is beneficial...though I should NEVER power flush my tranny. I trust he'll do what's necessary (but not more) to keep my vehicle safely on the road.

 + -1 moreI have taken my car to Mark at Japanese Auto Service since moving into the DC area. He is reasonably priced, personable and honest. I went to get carburetor work done and he told me that it wasn't worth fixing, saving me around $300. All of the work on my car has been good and I've never had a problem. This is a mom and pop shop that has been in the same place for around 15 years. Quality work.
