We used Giancarlo's son Paul, who took over his father's business, for about 3 years. While initially pleased with Paul's work, we found that a number of the plantings didn't flourish. In talking with other landscapers (we changed services last year), we learned that the specific plants and flowers used in Paul's designs were not suited to the recommended locations. Paul's regular lawn maintenance and seasonal trimming and cleanup work were fine and fairly priced. Weak on responsiveness - I tried on many occasions to reach him via email, and he took a long time to respond.

The first surprise was that Mr. Bianchi recommended that we not do some of the work we asked him to bid. Although other landscapers had bid that work, he advised that it made no sense to mulch until Spring. His bid was thus lower and we liked his frankness. The workers came on time and did the work well. Unfortunately, while trimming a small tree, one of them slipped and cut the phone and internet wires coming into our house. They apologized and called Mr. Bianchi right away. He showed up in 20 minutes or so and insisted that he pay any charges to repair the wires (in the end, there were none). He also asked the workers to stay for the afternoon and do more work on the yard for free, to compensate for our inconvenience. We were delighted and they did a great job edging our lawn and seeing to a dozen details to make the yard look trimmer and nicer. Mr. Bianchi even returned the next day to apologize again and make sure that everything was satisfactory. Satisfactory? Heck, it was terrific! He was the low bidder, did the work on time, did a fine job with everything and then threw in several man hours of extras because of a small accident. Most of us no longer expect this level of service, customer concern and going the extra mile; what a delightful surprise. I haven't got the bill yet and my wife and I are beginning to wonder if Mr. Bianchi is going to pick up the tab as well. What a guy!

This was one of several estimates I received. The owner explained that he had recently transferred management of the company to his son. Nevertheless, he (the father) was doing the estimate. He was extremely knowledgeable and gave a good quote. However, I was concerned that I was not meeting the son who would have been the one performing the work.

He promptly came to give an estimate. His quote of $50 to mow our smallish but overgrown yard seemed steep, but later compared well to other vendor quotes. (We gave the job to a neighbor). He also roughly quoted us for removing a stump at $120, which isn't bad considering he doesn't have a grinder and would have had to do it by hand. Turns out we have two stumps and a whole hill to dig up so we are looking for machinery. I would call him again for work.

It's hard to know what to write here, because it did not go terribly smoothly. Partly this was my expectations. Partly this was mis-communication. I had interviewed a number of landscapers asking for a "carpet of vinca" -- ie. we didn't want to wait years for it to connect and look nice. I told them all we didn't want to look at "hair plugs" of plants while we waited years for them to grow together. Most landscapers told me I was being unrealistic and it would cost thousands. John said "I can do it!" He showed us a book to pick the plants, then he called back later to say that one of our choices wasn't available in this climate zone. (That shook my confidence in his plant knowledge, but we proceeded because our first choice was available and his price was so cheap it was less than we'd expected to pay on plants alone.) He told us he would buy 100 3" pot vinca plants and that he felt that would fill the area, like we wanted with "just a little bit of mulch showing"...then he called to say the nursery didn't have 100 potted plants, so he was going to use individual plugs in flats to make up the difference. At least that's what I thought he meant, but he bought all flats of plant plugs. Despite the discussions about wanting plants close together and not wanting to see much of the mulch, he instructed the young helpers to plant them 6" apart. When I tried to interrupt and say we wanted them closer, he overspoke me and we had one of our garbled conversations and everything was smoothed over. The day of the work, I came home to find that the 2 helpers had obviously started their work on either sides, because these was much better plant coverage in the corners where no one can see and it looked really bald right in the most visible middle area. I had a garden of hair plugs and I was horrified. I called John and he came that night. In the meantime, I called the nursery where he bought the plants. I was surprised that a landscaper would buy plants (especially so many) from a retail nursery, but to his credit, he gave me the sales slip and charged the plants at cost. When I spoke to the person at the nursery, they assured me that the number of plants was very high for the area being planted and one wouldn't want to plant more. So I re-aligned my expectations. John came and clearly wanted to make me happy. He didn't really see why I was upset, though he did see that the plants were thinnest where the garden was most visible. So he offered to plant 2 more flats (without charging labor) if I paid for the plants ($80). In the end, with the additional plants it looks a lot better.. and with my re-adjusted expectations, I am happy with the results. I was not happy with the communication problems. I am hesitant to give John less than high grades because he clearly cares about pleasing the customer, and on more straight-forward projects, I bet he's excellent.
Description of Work: We had a rocky incline by the back fence of our property that we wanted to turn into a bed of ground cover. John had his young helpers plant many vinca/periwinkle plants and then came back and mulched the bed.

John returned my call the evening I left a voice-mail message. He came out the next day, Saturday, and provided me with a price on the spot. Since his price was lower than another I had gotten, I hired him. The next day, a Sunday, half the job (cutting the yews down) was completed. Two days later the second half of the job (removing the roots) was completed. The crew did a good job of clean-up.

I found Mr. Bianchi on Angie's List and had never seen another contractor listed with so many favorable reports. He responded immediately to my initial call, set an appointment within two days to look at the work to be done, came exactly when he agreed to, provided a very reasonable detailed (written) estimate, and promised to return within two weeks to complete initial spring clean-up, tree-trimming, and mulching. In fact, he returned within a week, starting work so quietly on a Saturday morning that he didn't even disturb my dogs. I am delighted with the work: he rectified sloppy work done by a company I had previously used, did a thorough cleanup, very attractive mulching, and unobtrusive but effective trimming of neighbors' trees which were overhanging/touching my roof. He kept me informed of what he was doing, made suggestions (e.g., downspout extensions to carry runoff beyond new mulch). I have contracted with Mr. Bianchi for regular mowing and lawn maintenance.
Description of Work: Mr. Bianchi came out and looked at the job, provided a written estimate, and returned with in a week to do spring cleanup, edging and mulching of beds, trimming of neighbors' trees overhanging my roof, trimming my shrubbery, fertilizing and overseeding the lawn. I have contracted with him for season-long lawn care (mowing every two weeks).

We have a very small yard and moderate-sized garden. I was worried that we wouldn't be able to find someone to do such a small job. "Jon" responded promptly to my call and came out to give an estimate for the work. He fit the job in on a Sunday, which I appreciated. I am recovering from an ankle sprain so it was impossible for me to do the work done myself. Jon and his crew blew through the yard in less than an hour and left the deck, walkways, yard and garden in great shape. It would have taken me a few full days of work at a minimum (which I couldn't do anyway due to the sprain). I care deeply about my garden and was very glad that he knew what to do for specific plants (i.e., not cutting down the hydrangeas). Our next door neighbor did complain that the crew left a pile of acorns from the oak tree in front of her doorway which she almost slipped on. I didn't even mention it since I think the acorns were there to begin with. Overall I was quite pleased with the work.
Description of Work: Giancarlo ("Jon") and his crew of two men came to the house to do a fall clean-up of the yard and garden. The work consisted of cutting down perennial plants, and removing all the leaves, sticks, and dead plants that covered the yard, deck and garden.

Giancarlo came promptly to give an estimate. He recommended another person to cut down a huge tree which was too close to the house. He said he could do all the other work in two weeks time and gave me a written estimate. Before two weeks had gone by, he removed the brush pile. He called to say when he was coming to do the cutting and trimming. He ended up getting stung several times when he encountered a HUGE wasp nest hiding inside the yews. He called the next day to apologize for not finishing the work. He took it upon himself to get rid of the wasp nest. (This nest was at least 15 inches long and 10 inches wide.) He used up two cans of insect spray (and is a braver soul than I'll ever be). I'm extremely pleased with his work.
Description of Work: Giancarlo cut down small trees, trimmed VERY overgrown yews that extended about 40 feet, removed a dead tree, a huge branch from another tree and cut back several branches that were too large and high for me to deal with and hauled all the brush away (and another huge pile of brush I had piled in the backyard).
