Gentle Giant Moving & Storage Somerville

.I first used this company 17 years ago to move us and have used them recently to move some things in my home. This is an excellent company. They will do large moving jobs as well as small jobs.

We used Gentle Giants 11 years ago to move from a 1 bedroom apartment to a 3 bedroom house. It was very expensive (over $2500 for not a huge amount of stuff.) They also refused to wrap our brand new mattress and it ended up getting dirty. They also chipped an antique, but because of our insurance, they paid to have it refinished. Since our experience had been largely positive and we were very busy, my husband wanted to just go with them again. I suggested calling them and two other companies for comparison. Gentle Giants did the estimate over the phone, and after an hour said that they needed to come out to the house as well because we had so much more stuff than they thought we did. (Usually they do phone or in person but not both.) The woman I spoke to guessed that the job would be about $5000 but that they'd have to come in person. I ended up meeting with two other companies I liked a lot better, one of whom was $1500 less and one of whom (the one we went with) was $2000 less!

The men arrived right on time. They were hard working, courteous, careful, and extremely helpful. Excellent company!

They were wonderful; they were really good. I called and they literally came in 20 minutes. They were phenomenal. They were nice guys. I would use them again and I would highly recommend them. They couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. Other quotes were more expensive and I expected to pay because of the short notice.

We originally contacted them in October to discuss estimate and potential moving dates. Although price was a factor, it was more important to us that the company we hired was caring and careful since my parents had lived in the house for 40+ years. We had a few delays on our end, so we had to wait. In early Decmber I contacted them again and they were able to acces our former estimates and discuss new dates. We settled on a date. A few days before the move, we were contacted again to discuss the details and check in on our progress. On the moving day, they knew my elderly parents were overwhelmed and took the time to talk with them and help them without being condescending. They treated my parent's things as if they owned them. They were very careful, spent time understanding what needed to move and what still needed to be packed. When they arrived to unload everything, they again took time to talk with us and check in to make sure all was well. They unloaded, checked to make sure everything was going where it needed to, and when they were done, waled back through the house and moved things. It was challenging because my parents hadn't realized they needed to label things better so we would know where to put all the furniture and boxes. Very efficient, effective, kind, patient, and professional. I would recommend them to anyone.

Movers showed up as estimated between 8-8:30am. Moved the house into the truck in 4 hours. Took a 30 minute lunch break on the drive to the new place. Unpacking took 2.5 hours. Wonderful group of guys.

The movers arrived at 8:00 AM, spent half the day loading the truck and packing the furniture (everything else was self packed). Then unloaded the materials in a second residence, then moved to a storage shed where the rest was unloaded and stored.

They were very good. I don't remember how much they charged me. I used them because I read a review of them on the Angie's List website. I thought their price was very very good.

Gentle Giant deserves an A+ all the way. I moved from southern New Hampshire to Newburyport, MA. They sent out someone to do an estimate, got back to me promptly and were very open to any questions I had. For the move: they arrived a day before to pack any remaining items I hadn't done, wrapped all my furniture with blankets and then with plastic (similar to shrink wrap) and staged the move. The day of the move they arrived on time, and had everything out within 3 hours! For the move in 2 days later....again, arrived on time, they were courteous, careful (really careful) and I can't say enough about how willing they were to place things where I wanted them....even after I changed my mind! They also came back to take away the boxes after I called them (no rush). The move involved some heavy furniture and a piano along with the usual household items.Short story: On time, careful, courteous, and under estimate. Thanks, Gentle Giant!

I submitted my information online and got a call back from the booker. They take down all your information and schedule the move. A few days before you get another call to double-check all the information and reconfirm the move start time. Great customer service. The crews themselves are always on time and fast moving. They are incredibliy strong and very smart about packing and storing. Moving is a difficult experience at best - these guys and gals make it painless.

Everyone, from start to finish, was very responsive.

They rescheduled the move around Hurricane Irene, sent extra crew to get us out of one house before the closing and then into the new house after that closing. They have incredibly skilled, professional, and careful workers.

I want to give them a glowing review. Overall, the job was absolutely excellent. It was an inhouse move and they took tremendous care with all my furniture. I actually slowed them down by looking at the things for damage but they handled it with such grace and professionalism. It was the last day of the month which was the worst day for moving. When it seemed that they were running out of time, they brought in extra guys above and beyond of what they had. They came in at or below the estimate that they had given me even with the additional help. They did a great job and with perfection in terms of where I wanted a piece of furniture to be placed. They would ask me about where and how I wanted it to be placed if it was not quite right and they would move it for me. They barely even stopped to get water or to eat because they were moving so quickly and were trying to get the job done. I would not use another mover in the Boston area as they will be the only one that I would use. I would definitely use them again in the future.

I moved from Somerville to Saugus and needed my bedroom furniture moved. While Gentle Giants prices are higher than most (I priced out many other moving companies" their service was great. The overall experience was great from the customer service to the actual movers. Everyone was courteous and respectful. The movers made sure to keep me in the loop and even asked if they wanted some of my other belongings packaged up. I would definitely recommend this company as long as you don't mind paying a little extra....it's worth it!!!

Pre-Move: The move coordinator we worked with was very responsive and friendly. She took the time to answer all my questions, advise on what to expect etc. The estimate that they gave us was for 5-7 hours with 3 guys...they came in at the end at 7 hours (6 hours moving and 1 hour travel time) so it was pretty accurate. Move Day: The movers arrived right on time, they were very professional and careful. They even patiently waited for me to put felt tips on furniture legs as they came in and unwrapped the furniture. They moved quickly and carefully, even asking at the end if we wanted them to move anything from where they placed it (where we originally asked them to place it). I would highly recommend Gentle Giant if you want reliable, excellent service. They were the most expensive of the estimates we received but worth the extra money we paid for being able to trust that they were doing a good job.

Day One: The Gentle Giant Box Xpress team came and spent about 4-5 hours wrapping and packing our home, including formal china, our children's artwork, and our other valuables. They were very gentle and made sure they labeled everything in a way that made it effortless to find our things when we started unpacking. When they'd finished packing us up, they then spent an extra hour or so to wrap our furniture for the next days team so that the move would go faster. This included wrapping each individual item of furniture in a moving blanket. Day Two: We had a moving team of 4 guys and two trucks who came in and successfully moved our entire house from start to finish in under 8 hours, which included reassembling our bedrooms and hoisting a few larger pieces of furniture (which couldn't make it up the stairs) safely over the porch. They took the time to first walk through the house and learn the layout before they started moving things in so that they could keep track of where everything needed to go. They protected the woodwork in our new home, did not cause any damage to the paint, walls, or floors, and left the house as clean as it was before the move. They provided top-notch service and were an absolute pleasure to spend time with.

I have already submitted a report describing the good work Gentle Giant did packing half of my household to ready my house for sale. This report is about what came next. Because of their excellent service, I presumed I would have them relocate my entire house to Maryland when the time came, but the estimate took a look time to get and came to $12,000. (Gentle Giant is prompt, professional, and thorough in most things it seems to me, but NOT in giving estimates. I had to actually nag them to get a number, then got a number and was immediately told to disregard it, and not sent a revised number for a day or two.) So I got a competitive bid and Road Runner came in at $8,000 less. I let Gentle Giant review the bid but they were unable to significantly close the gap, so I went with Road Runner, which I do believe was the right choice. I was annoyed to learn that Gentle Giant charges hefty fees ($15 for each of my 5 vaults, plus an hourly rate for the labor) to let me take my things. In addition, they do not prorate by more than half months, which was frustrating when I was less than a week into the month. I felt nickel and dimed. All this said--unpacking revealed a clear distinction in the service Gentle Giant had provided. The labels on the boxes were very accurate, and not a single thing packed by Gentle Giant got broken in the move. While Road Runner was high quality, and swiftly credited us the money for the two lamps they broke, neither of these things were strictly true about Road Runner. (We discovered 2-3 other things that were broken after the lamps, none of which were worth pursuing Road Runner for reimbursement for. They are either of little value to us or glue-able. Still not having them break wouldn't have been preferable.) Road Runner neglected to pack two garbage bins we wanted to take with us and in spite of a promise to go back to pick them up right before leaving we had to replace them--for which Road Runner kindly and pleasantly reimbursed us, which made it right. Still there's a difference here. With a difference in cost of $4,000, there's no question in my mind that Road Runner was the right choice. But a shorter distance of a move might close that gap somewhat, and I do think Gentle Giant provides better service than Road Runner does.

They did a very good job. They were very careful with my items and were pleasant to work with.

On a scale of 1 to 10, they have a 10. They were prompt, courteous, careful with my belongings, and they did what they were supposed to do. The price wasn't outrageous either. There were antiques involved, and they took their time. It was a five hour drive, and they did great. The local move involved many steps and they were patient with. They were very efficient and quick without being careless.

I received bids from several companies and Gentle Giant was the most expensive, but I had used them 3 times before over the past 14 years and those experiences were so positive that I went with them for this move as well. All the good stuff: The crew arrived on time and got to work right away. The crew worked very hard and they were always actively working. They moved all my belongings safely and securely. They were creative when necessary as the new location had a winding staircase that made things more complicated. One very large and heavy piece had to be hoisted up via the rear porch. The not-so-good stuff: I had a gas grill on my balcony at the loft and they just ignored it. As I did my final walkthrough I realized it was still there and spoke to the crew chief who said they don't move gas grills because of the tank. I asked if they would move the grill if I moved the tank myself and they said yes, but it would have been nicer if they had taken the initiative to address this themselves. I could have easily left the grill behind. I had purchased a bulk package of plain white newspaper from them ($21) prior to my move date to pack my belongings. I only used a small portion of this paper and had it laying on the kitchen island at the loft for last minute packing. As the move from the loft was ending I placed the remaining bulk paper into a moving bin (I planned on using this as masking paper for painting at the new place) but this paper never arrived at the apartment. I didn't realize it until a couple weeks later so I just let it go, but I imagine the crew just assumed it was theirs. No big deal, but an exampe of a communication lapse. Gentle Giant had to secure a moving zone permit from the City of Somerville, which meant two large sandwich board no-parking signs were placed on the sidewalk in front of my new place to keep the spot for them. They were still there as they were leaving so I asked the crew chief what I should do with them - should they take them, should I toss them, call someone or would they be picked up automatically by someone? He didn't have any idea. Someone (I have no idea who) took them away the next day. For this kind of money I expect that Gentle Giant would take care of every little detail - after all, this crew moves people 5 days a week, every week of the year. I move once every 4-5 years. The gas grill and the no-parking sign issues could and should have easily been addressed.

They were great. They were very timely and quick. The people were great. I would use them again.

Chris arrived punctually and was very professional. He carefully examined everything we wanted to move and asked appropriate questions. Within a day or 2, I received his estimate. The estimated weight was within 100 lbs of another company's estimate. Gentle Giant has a great reputation. However, their estimate was approximately $1700 higher than another highly rated company, and, unlike the other company, their estimate was non-binding. The final cost could have been higher or lower, based on actual weight and services used, but we were more comfortable with more certainty. Another uncertain factor was whether they would need to use a shuttle because of our house location, and the shuttle would have increased the cost. The company we chose uses smaller trucks and definitely wouldn't need a shuttle. Finally, I was a little concerned that their estimate included a piano, which we don't have, making me wonder about overall accuracy of their estimate.

I would highly recommend Gentle Giant. We have moved with them several times, and every crew member is careful, fast and efficient. The movers actually jogged our boxes out the door and into the truck. They aim to be as quick as possible but are also very careful with our personal possessions. The sales people are also a pleasure to work with and are great at making sure you are prepared for the move.

They came on time and walked through with me, complimented my labeling job, and then got to work. They worked all of one day packing and prepping and half of the next moving. The last part was moving some of our pieces in house. This is complex work, taking half our stuff, and they did an excellent job. Gentle Giant is worth the money. Another thing to bear in mind, and I've had this experience before--they aim high in their estimates I think. You'll probably pay a little below the estimate.

We couldn't be more pleased with move by Gentle Giant. Movers treated our home and all of our furniture with great care. They were very polite, helpful,and worked tirelessly. Overall very professional.
