I had to get my car towed there during mid-afternoon on a Saturday on a holiday weekend. There was no room in the lot, so my car had to sit in the middle of the street for at least 20 minutes before they pulled it into the garage. There is no real waiting room, just a small office which is extremely unattractive. The office is extremely small and it looks unprofessional with clutter all over the place. There is hardly any room to sit and Al, the owner, seems very unorganized.
I talked to Al before any work was done to get an idea about how long the work would take and he told me it would take an hour to hour and a half to complete. The repairs ended up only taking half an hour, but I was still charged for a full hour. I thought that was very unfair. During the repair I had to talk Al down from trying to repair several other things that weren't really necessary and I couldn’t really afford
I also felt I had to trust Al if I should replace the serpentine belt. In the end, I decided to replace it after having to talk to his several other mechanics in order to feel comfortable in arriving at my decision.
After the repairs, Al stated I needed to put more antifreeze in my car. He then asked me if I had any in my car to put in. I told him I had some in the back of my car and told him I would like for him to put it in. When I went to go get the antifreeze out of my car, I found out the mechanic had already put antifreeze in there before Al had asked me. But, I was still charged $20 for the antifreeze even though I had my own in the back of my car the whole time. Of course Al charged me $20 for the antifreeze which was not nice and unfair. He charged me a full hour of labor when it was only a half hour.
I do feel like Al did a good job with the repair and he seems knowledgeable. He has reasonable hourly prices for the Boston area as well. I am not happy, however, that he charged me for the antifreeze and for a full hour of labor. Those were the reasons I chose low grades for him, as well as the small, disorganized office. I graded him down much lower because the unprofessional office, it was small and cluttered, there was no real waiting area. I chose him initially because I was impressed that he ordered the parts for my car before he even looked at the car. He knew what needed to be done. In the end I gave him extra latitude for overcharging me for those things, because he got me in on a mid to late afternoon on a Saturday on a holiday weekend.
The next visit went pretty smooth. They fixed the problem quickly at a good price. At the end, however, I was surprised to learn that Al decided that they had replaced lug nuts because they were so difficult to get off and he didn't want me to get stuck with a flat tire and be unable to change the tire. I paid the unexpected cost because I trusted Al's judgment.
The next visit was about 4 months ago when I brought one of my cars in because the check engine light was on. They told me they would look at the car and get back to me. Toward the end of the day, no call came so I called ABJ. I was told that they needed a part but the parts store was closed so they wouldn't be able to get to it so they needed to keep the car.
They kept the car and when it go to be around the afternoon the next day and I hadn't heard anything, I called ABJ for an update. Al seemed to have no idea what car I was calling about and asked me to call back in a bit. So I waited a few hours and called back. Al then told me that they were so busy that they didn't get a chance to get to my car so they would need to keep it. He was very quick to get off the phone.
The next day I still hadn't heard anything so I called back in the afternoon. I was told at this time that the car was ready and again, he was quick to get off the phone. The problem appeared to be resolved.
I wasn't real impressed with ABJ at this point but I had a brake issue that I wanted to resolve ASAP so right after I picked myh first car up I decided to give ABJ another chance with my other car. The car had had squeaking brakes but the brakes were new (installed by another shop) so I knew that new brakes were not likely the answer. Again, I dropped the car off and asked to be called but no call came. So I called to check in. Al told me that I didn't need new brakes but they took care of the problem and I could pick my car up. I didn't get a chance to even discuss with him what they did because he was so quick to get off the phone. When I went to pick up the car, Al was in more of a talking mood. He told me that my wheels had accumulated a bunch of junk in between them and that they cleaned them out and that should resolve the problem. He then told me that my bill was $130 for 2 hours of labor. I'm not sure how cleaning the tires took that long so I wasn't too happy with that. He also told me that the power was out at the shop so he couldn't give me a copy of the bill but he would mail it to me. The bill never came.
The next day I noticed some noise coming from the back of the car that was not there before. Plus the brake squeaking was still there. So I took the car back to ABJ. He told me that they must have damaged the rotors when they were inspecting the brakes but those things happen so he would machine them out but would not give me new rotors. We argued for a bit but it was clear Al was not going to budge and he kept trying to get off the phone with me. So he did his little fix on my rotors but I now had damaged rotors, brakes that still squeaked, and a bill for $130. I was not a happy camper.
After the check engine light came back on my first car about 2 weeks after ABJ had first looked at it, I knew that ABJ had lost me as a customer for good.
