We used We Show Up for a shower door replacement along with some tile, grout, and plaster work in both our bathrooms. We were extremely happy with the service and quality of work! After waiting for several months for another contractor to come do the work we moved on from them and found We Show Up with many good reviews. Alan came out in a reasonable amount of time, gave us an estimate, and was very transparent about when they could get out to do our work and the pricing. They did a great job and Alan came back to inspect after each day of work. Would highly recommend them.

We Show Up were great to work with and I would recommend them for any remodeling project. I worked with We Show Up on several projects in my condo: 1) adding sound deadening material and insulation around an HVAC cabinet, 2) finding a noisy pipe in the ceiling, and 3) removing two built-in wall shelves and patching the walls. Alan, Miguel, and Kamal were great: they showed up on time each day, kept me informed as they worked, and answered all of my questions. They were also very careful about wearing masks and observing social distancing. The HVAC insulation and shelf projects turned out great, and the drywall patches came out very smooth and ready for painting. We were unable to find the noisy pipe, but that wasn’t their fault. Overall, I’m very happy with how everything turned out.

Alan and his crew are fantastic! They were punctual each day, worked efficiently and did excellent work. We live in an old colonial and had three rooms painted , one with cracks in the wall and a flaking ceiling. They look like new- they really go the extra mile with prep and sanding. Very happy with the painting. I also appreciated their respect for safety protocols (my project was completed during the pandemic), his crew was respectful and professional.

While we had some hiccups organizing around COVID with the original dates being cancelled due the lockdown, once we had a schedule confirmed, everything went as planned. Everything began and ended on time, team did a great job- they maintained a very clean space which was hard given the small space I live and work from. There were a few touch ups needed which they promptly came back for. All in all a very professional job.

We had some water damage in our basement after a toilet overflowed and needed some of the baseboards removed. We hired We Show Up to replace them. Alan provided a quote over the phone and scheduled us for the next week. Unfortunately, one of his workers hurt his back the day before and they were not able to come, but Alan let me know the day before and apologized. We were able to reschedule for the next week. Mark, his assistant, showed up promptly, took measurements, and went and bought supplies. He worked cleanly and professionally. The baseboards look great and the price was very reasonable. Would certainly hire them again for another job.

Alan and David arrived right when Alan told me they would. They started assembling right away. I left for about an hour and when I got back, not only was everything that needed assembly finished, they'd already installed the vertical blind! They were finished (and David cleaned!) by 1:00PM. When Alan originally came to see what needed to be done, he told me he was booked through November (this was late August). I received the estimate on Sept. 4th. I printed it out at the library on Sept. 9th & mailed it to him along with a check for the deposit. Alan called me on Wednesday, Sept. 14th to tell me that he had a cancellation for today, Friday, Sept. 16th. I agreed, he and David arrived, did the work that needed to be done, cleaned up and left. Amazingly, everthing went perfectly. Alan and David covered everything I needed from soup to nuts! Highly recommend We Show Up!
Description of Work: I needed a bunch of little stuff done. I needed a vertical blind hung for a sliding door, plus a curtain rod added to the little window next to it. I needed a new bottom for a chair that may not look like much but holds much sentimental value to me. I needed an IKEA TV stand assembled, as well as a filing cabinet and two carts. In my bedroom, I needed a curtain rod put up along with my valences and a door curtain installed once the old hardware was removed and a piece of artwork hung and finally, a rug pad cut to fit a rug and the rug laid in the bedroom. I needed a mezuzah installed in my doorway and the prayer said upon installation.

Due to challenges at our end, there was a six-month time span between Alan's first visit to look at the kitchen and bedroom on September 16, 2015, and when he began work on the project on March 22, 2016. Consistent with his company's name, Alan showed up right on time back in September of last year to look at the water damage and assess the repair work that needed to be done. He was very personable, and we liked him immediately. He forwarded a quote promptly, just four days later. Since this was our first big home repair project, it turned out that we had a lot to learn. We realized at that point that we needed to figure out whether we wanted to re-mediate the lead paint in the kitchen walls or just ask Alan to contain the lead dust using RRP practices while he worked. We also realized we didn't know if the kitchen and bedroom ceilings were coated with lead paint, because the lead inspector who had assessed our unit some years ago had not tested the ceilings. After bringing in a lead remediation company and the lead inspector, we decided not to re-mediate the lead paint, and learned that the ceilings did not contain lead paint or asbestos, which we were also advised to test for. After all that, we thought we were finally clear on the scope of work. We then asked Alan if he would be willing to change the format of his quote, which was not all inclusive. His quote indicated that some items, such as additional consults to discuss work progress, etc., research in preparation for the project, and materials and the time to purchase them, would be charged depending on actual costs. However, we needed an all-inclusive quote to submit to our insurance company. Alan kindly agreed to prepare an all-inclusive quote for us. I believe he modified the quote at least once more after that first reformatting, as a result of my uncertainty about what our homeowner's insurance appraiser had actually included in the scope of work. Alan was patient with this drawn-out process and quote revisions, which we really appreciated. Another contractor withdrew his proposal towards the end of this process, citing concern about the need for quote modifications. After some additional delay, caused by the need to file a claim with our condo association’s insurance company also, we were finally able to sign a contract with Alan in late January 2016. His first available start date was Monday, March 21st, which was fine with us, since we had some other home repair and renovation projects going on in the meantime. (Alan later offered us an earlier date when another client postponed a project, but ultimately, the 21st ended up being best for him and for us.) When we signed the contract, I let Alan know that I wanted to put together a list of questions for him about how he expected the project to proceed, and about what we should do, and what he would do, to prevent any damage to furnishing, flooring, etc., during the course of the work. Our other home repair and renovation projects had left me a little sadder and wiser about the potential for collateral damage. Alan was completely understanding, and offered to come over before the project started, so that we could discuss my questions in person. We arranged a time in early February. He spent at least an hour discussing the project with me, which I really appreciated. Alan ended up starting on Tuesday, March 22nd, rather than Monday, March 21st, due to a calendar mix-up on his part. This was disappointing, since we had already removed everything possible from the kitchen and taped up the cabinets, and were keen on keeping the disruption to as short a period as possible. However, there was a significant snow storm predicted for our area on March 21st, and ultimately, it did seem wiser to start on Tuesday, since it was unclear what travel conditions would be on Monday. Alan was very responsive too all of our requests during the ongoing work, and we were happy with the end result. There were a few hiccups along the way. Alan asked us what colors we wanted used in the kitchen. We asked him to match the original colors, and were surprised to come home that night to find that the kitchen walls were light green, when they had previously been light blue! Alan mentioned he had used a color fan to try to match the color, and thought he had had a good match. Fortunately, we were fine with the new color, and everyone who has seen it, likes it. He offered to take a chip of paint from the bedroom walls with him when he went to purchase paint for that room. The color he painted the bedroom walls was a good match for the original. On Friday, March 25th, Alan texted me to say, “Kitchen painted except baseboards and near fridge. Two coats on walls and ceiling. Doorways and around window also painted.” We came home that night to find that he had thoughtfully put the bulbs back in the ceiling light fixture sockets. We had been relying on small under counter lights while the ceiling and wall replacement and painting were done. However, when we turned on the overhead lights, we saw that the ceiling had ridges in it in a number of places. Upon closer examination of the whole room the next day, we also saw that the amount of paint had been applied unevenly on some parts of the walls and trim. There were some little gaps where the new dry wall did not meet the trim or baseboard, and some wall paint on the ceiling, and ceiling paint on the walls. There were some sections of doorway trim near the floor that didn’t appear to have been painted. In some places, there were small amounts of wall paint on the trim or trim paint on the wall. The paint lines between the walls and ceiling were not all straight. We were surprised by this, since Alan’s text had implied that the painting in the kitchen was complete, except for the areas he had mentioned. We carefully marked each flaw with a sticky, and went over them all with Alan on Monday morning. Alan mentioned that he had put the bulbs back in the ceiling light sockets right before he left, but hadn’t turned them on. He said that in the natural light of Friday afternoon, the paint job had looked much better. We agreed that the defects were much less visible in natural light. Alan wasn’t happy either with how the kitchen looked in the light of the ceiling bulbs. He acknowledged and fixed each of the flaws we pointed out, and told us we shouldn’t hesitate to let him know if there was anything else that he had missed. I did call him a few days later with some other items, but in that case, he was aware of each one and was already planning to fix it. The quality of the patching and painting work in the bedroom was high, and we did not notice any defects that needed to be corrected. Our final punch list at the end of the project included two chips in the paint on the radiators in the kitchen, which had just been painted the previous month and had been pristine; scratches on the bedroom floor where the bed had been moved (although Alan had used furniture moving coasters, it is likely that there had been some grit on the floor that caused scratches); and scuffs on the kitchen linoleum. Alan brought silver paint and touched up the radiators. He used a special oil on the bedroom floor that made the scratches all but invisible. He cleaned the scuffs on the kitchen floor. Earlier in the project, on his own initiative, he had applied clear caulking between our kitchen counter and the splash-guard, which was badly needed. We appreciated the fact that Alan noticed and took care of this, even though it was not part of the scope of work. He also pointed out that a wall in a little hallway adjacent to our kitchen was badly cracked, and suggested that it would make sense for him to replace the wall and repaint the wall while he was there. He said the additional cost to do the repair would be minor. We agreed. The cost was quite reasonable, and the wall looks so much better now. Alan finished up the work in the bedroom on a Monday. The weekend before that Monday, I had cleaned out the dust and debris out of all of the kitchen cabinets, where it had managed to get in despite the cabinets being taped shut! Some of the dust and debris that I cleaned out of the cabinet above the stove had fallen onto the stove. I fully expected to clean that up later, but when I got home Monday night, Alan had cleaned the stove. A very nice touch that I appreciated. Regarding price, Alan’s was similar to that offered by another reputable contractor from whom we had solicited a proposal. We are pleased with the quality of the final product. We appreciated Alan’s patience in the run-up to signing a contract with him and his responsiveness to each of our requests before and during the project. We also appreciated the extra touches and the excellent cleaning job Alan did after the project was complete. We would (and already have) recommended Alan to others.

Alan is a pleasure to work with. He is patient, considerate, and funny; he prepares carefully for his work and ensures that the customer understands his proposals. Because the job required making some inferences about what lay behind the building facade, he enlisted my help in unearthing historical architectural plans and permit applications. This strengthened my confidence that he would do the job right. And the job turned out to be simple (and inexpensive) -- a big contrast with some of the wilder estimates we had received from other contractors. Alan Weisner wants to do right by the customer. He will remain my go-to contractor for fix-it jobs.

Repaired bathroom floor and installed new shower doors.
Allen, the owner, came out. He was nice. He has a really good personality. He seems to know everything that he was looking at. He seemed well-versed in the project. I got the quote pretty quickly after he came out. He was on time and he’s punctual. I wasn’t crazy about his actual quote. Most of the quote is made up of disclaimers and almost like legal terminologies. The bottom 1 inch of the quote was a list of what he was doing and the price. It seemed like majority of the quote was more of a fine print. It wasn’t easy to read as some of the other quotes I have gotten.

The last time any of these rooms had been painted was more than 12 years ago. We now have beautifully painted and smooth walls, ceilings, and trim, where before we had cracks and peeling paint. Alan really knows his paints -- what is appropriate for kitchen cabinets versus walls, what is the best paint to hide stains, etc. -- and he educates the client. He also took the extra step of making sure the paint colors I had chosen came out exactly as I wanted them, not just what the computer said (paint colors will look different depending on the particular base used and eyes turn out to be much better than computer programs). That leak in the kitchen ceiling required a plumber to repair the leaky upstairs tub and then Alan and Louis to open up the ceiling, replace rotten wood and level the sheetrock. Alan got a good plumber within 1 hour of discovering the problem -- because he has a network of other people --plumbers, etc.-- who respect him and make an extra effort to help his clients. Alan and Louis then repaired the damage to the ceiling. The repaired area is perfectly level with the rest of the ceiling; in other words, the repair (~ 5' x 10') is completely invisible. This was a long project, but Alan made it quite bearable. Whenever possible, he worked room by room, thus minimizing the inherent disruption of having painters in the house. At the end of every day, the place was swept up and all material put neatly out of the way. Alan is much more than a very good painter and handyman. He educates his clients. He is completely transparent about what he thinks can be done about a problem and what to expect. Although Alan bills on an hourly basis plus cost of materials (because you never know what problems may arise -- like that leaky ceiling), I found his estimates to be very accurate. I will definitely hire him for future work.
Description of Work: Alan Weisner and his assistant Louis repaired, prepped, and painted 8 rooms/areas of our home this summer (2013): Living room, dining room, kitchen , breakfast room, full and 1/2 bathrooms, study, and all the trim and ceiling in main hallway. It was a huge undertaking, with complications both expected -- calcimine ceilings -- and unexpected -- leak in kitchen ceiling. Alan handled each and every room and problem wonderfully.

Fantastic! These trellises are more like 8-foot by 8-inch sculptures - we wanted them as a bit of neighbor screening and for growing flowering vines. They came with instructions that required a fair amount of interpretation, which Alan did superbly. He arrived with all necessary tools (there were a lot needed).. He dug a 2-foot hole for each trellis (avoiding and dealing with roots and rocks, and patiently working with my placement specifications), placed a cut-to-fit sonotube for each, mixed and poured the concrete, and then leveled and tied each one. It was definitely an odd job that I'm sure I'd have had a hard time finding anyone to help me with. Alan has done other jobs for us, and I'm so impressed that he was up for something so unusual. And it all turned out great - they look amazing.

I do not understand Alan's good ratings here. Maybe when Alan does the work he does it well, but Alan did not do my work. He showed up with a guy named Louis, who he had never previously mentioned. Alan said it was a Jewish holiday, Sukkot, and so Louis would do the work. I had waited at least six weeks for Alan to schedule my projects. When he called the day before to say he would be there on the following day, he said nothing about having Louis do the work because of a Jewish holiday. Alan showed Louis what to do and left. I had to go to the hardware store to get the railing paint. Alan had said that he would supply paint, but he showed up without it. When I asked if I needed to go get some railing paint he said. "Well, Louis can't. I'm taking the truck." Louis was in the back yard painting the garage window when I went out to the car in the front yard. The smell of cigarette smoke was overwhelming. Yep, Louis turned out to be a chain smoker and never was I asked if it was okay to smoke on the premises. Louis did an okay job on the garage window, the exterior board painting, the cabinet hanging and the door latch replacement. He didn't use a wire brush on the railing before painting it. So it looks a lot rougher than it should. He sanded the table without attaching the dust catcher. Alan had told me that there would be no dust. When I asked Louis why he didn't attach the dust catcher he said he didn't have it with him. He said there wouldn't be dust because it was such a light sanding. Stupid me, I allowed him to continue. There was a fine dust left all over the floor, window sills, woodwork, light fixture - everywhere. Louis slathered the poly on like he was painting the side of a barn. It looks like crap. He was supposed to do another sanding today at 8 a.m. and apply another coat of poly. More about why that didn't happen later. When I called Alan to complain about the lack of dust catcher he did apologize and say that Louis would use it on the second sanding. The second sanding never happened because Alan called this morning about 7:45 to say there would be no work done today because Louis called in sick at 7. Alan said he would be there Monday. Believe it or not he said today was also a Jewish Holiday. I'm not making this up. I told him to forget it. I don't want him back here. Told him to send me the bill for the work already done, minus the $175 upfront I gave him two weeks ago. I know you people don't know me, but I am about as easy-going, non-picky as they come. Maybe that's why I got taken advantage of by Mr. "We Show Up." Apparently Alan takes that old saying, "99% of success is showing up" LITERALLY. UPDATE 9/21/13: To make things worse the door handle fell off when I opened the door this morning. UPDATE: 10/9/13 The reason I didn't want to hear about the Jewish holiday is the Judaism had NOTHING to do with my complaint.
Description of Work: Alan did nothing. His worker Louis did the work. Small jobs - glazed a garage window, painted a small area of porch exterior, replaced a handle and lock on storm door, painted a front wrought-iron railing, hung a bathroom medicine cabinet, sanded and put a layer of poly on butcher-block table.

Response from We Show Up
I do not often respond to comments from my clients preferring to let the review stand as written. However, in this case I MUST respond. I take my reviews on Angie’s List very seriously and work hard to provide a high caliber of customer service and workmanship. I will address several of the points raised. 1. The client is correct in that my assistant erred in not connecting the vacuum attachment to the sander. This was a mistake. When the client called I apologized and made clear that when my assistant would return the next day I would give further instructions for connecting the attachment. I also assured her that he would clean up the dust that was left behind. 2. According to my assistant, he smoked two cigarettes outside. I am not aware that there is a special protocol for smoking outside of a client’s home. We DO NOT EVER ALLOW for smoking indoors. The client claimed he was chain smoking. 3. The client complains that she waited six weeks to have the work done. She did not have to accept that wait and could have decided to have someone else do the work. 4. On the day the initial work was completed I returned to pick up my assistant and review the work with both he and the client. The client was very pleased at the time and did not express any complaints or dissatisfaction. It was only later, that I heard about the dust. 5. Unfortunately, my assistant was ill the following day (Friday) and I called to inform the client shortly before 8 AM. At that point she said she didn’t want us back even though I said I would return with my assistant on Monday to make things right and follow up on the necessary table sanding and polyurethane application. 6. On Saturday morning, my Sabbath, I received a call at 7:00AM from the client that the new door handle had come off. I explained that I would come by in the early afternoon to secure it. Apparently, the set screws had not been tight enough. The door handle worked fine when we left on Thursday and I didn’t hear about it on Friday so I can assume it was fine at that time. I did return after religious services on Saturday and affixed the handle securely. 7. I tried to explain to the client that I wasn’t working Thursday or Friday because of a major Jewish holiday – Sukkot. I also told her on Saturday that I never work because it is our Sabbath but made an exception so her door handle would be back on. It took five minutes to set it tight. The client’s response to my attempt to explain my religious practice and observance was downright rude. She said – “I don’t want to hear” about that. Her statement and I quote: “Believe it or not he said today was also a Jewish holiday. I am not making this up” displays ignorance at the very least and an unwillingness to hear about another person’s religious practice. I was shocked. 8. I expressed that I would keep her fee at the $175 deposit and not bill her for the additional time or the materials provided. She has not corrected this in her update.

I called the provider and left a message and never heard back. I wouldn't normally write a review about a merchant not responding to an initial inquiry, but this one calls itself "we show up" and advertises every month in the angie's list magazine. I declined to solicit bids from other service providers because I'm busy and I had hoped one call to someone reliable and highly-rated could solve my problems. (Isn't that the purpose of Angie's list?) Now, a week later, I'm back where I started. I realize businesses don't owe prospective customers anything, but I had hoped for at least the courtesy of a "not interested" from the people who claim to be reliable. The name is a bit misleading...
Description of Work: I contacted this merchant to perform some repairs around my home

My apologies [removed member name]. I am sorry for not getting back to you in a timely manner. The last few weeks have been hectic and short with the advent of the Jewish high holidays. You were still on my list of call backs. I will contact you this week directly. Alan Weisner
