My garbage disposal wasn't working so I called Boston Standard based on positive reviews. My phone call was answered immediately and I had someone out to my place at exactly the time I asked for. My plumber, Mark, was very professional. He greeted me kindly, put on shoe covers, and was very thorough in explaining my options. I decided to replace my disposal given that the motor was aging. He gave me the price for the service, I agreed, and he got to work. Upon starting the replacement, he realized I didn't have the right piping for the new unit, but since he didn't quote me on this, he replaced the piping at no charge. I will definitely use Boston Standard again and tremendously appreciate the service. Responsive, honest about pricing, no pressure sales, and high quality service.

It went well. Different technicians came on each occasion and and both were quite professional. They both came when expected. The installation itself was quite complicated and took much longer than expected but price remained the same as estimated.
Description of Work: Service call to repair kitchen faucet. It could not be fixed. Ordered new faucet from supplier and Boston Standard returned to install faucet.

Initially, I refused to pay the $29.95 service fee as no service had been performed, but rather I had been subjected to a pressured sales pitch. After arguing for several minutes, I relented and offered $40.00 in cash to pay for the service call. The technician said he did not accept cash and he waived the fee. I then called the supervisor at the company to relate the experience to her. She was very professional, identified the problem as one that had originated with the person who took the scheduling call, and she apologized for my negative experience with their company. I very much appreciated the fact that she took responsibility for the problem, but I will not be using this company again.
Description of Work: Our water heater is 10 years old and only has a 6 year warranty. We therefore decided to be pro-active and replace it before it burst and flooded the downstairs condominium unit. I called (after hours) and thought I was scheduling the replacement of the hot water heater with an Energy Star electrical water heater (this is what I requested anyhow). The company called the next day to reschedule the time of the appointment (from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM). This was fine with me and I agreed. The technician arrived promptly at 2:00 PM without a water heater. He inspected our current unit and proceeded to engage in a hard sell of a "Marathon" plastic water heater with a lifetime guarantee. He could not quote me a rate, but rather went out to his truck to write up the quote which came back incredibly high: $2,225.87 (with service plan). I had checked the Internet in the meantime and determined that Marathon water heaters retail for about $800.00. I felt pressured into paying about twice as much as seemed reasonable. I became frustrated and angry and we proceeded to have a "discussion" about what had just happened.

We do accept cash, but I think there was miscommunication on Nick's part - he just didn't have change for $29.95 so he decided to waive the service charge as a result. Regarding the water heater you wanted us to bring, there are too many models of tanks to know which to bring without first seeing the job. In addition, there are times, like yours, where customers decline the work anyways and we would have to then return the Energy Star tank that we purchased. Regarding any sense of a high-pressure sale, I apologize. All of my staff work "by the hour" and do not receive any commission or "performance" pay except for when they work on call, where I bonus them for every call they go to as a courtesy to them and their paycheck. We have company meetings and discuss what customers should be purchasing if all things are equal - and that Rheem Marathon tank is an excellent product that has a lifetime warranty. We believe that any customer with an electric tank should choose this item over all other items because the lifetime warranty trumps all other products, in our opinion. Sometimes we get more excited about plumbing products that our customers and that enthusiasm can probably come across as pressure not to choose the lesser item - I apologize if you felt that way. I started this business to have customers want to use and refer us to their friends and family. I wish your call had gone differently. A service call was originally made for a leaky pipe. They came within a day of the call, fixing the pipe. When servicing the pipe, the hot water heater was determined to be leaking as well. They were able to quickly find a replacement. Due to scheduling issues, they asked if they could postpone the first appointment (3 days). This was not an issue as the faulty hot water was still functioning. Because of this minor inconvenience, they offered to give a rebate. They were prompt and professional. We will gladly hire them again for any future work.

On a cold January night, we discovered that we had no heat or hot water. Concerned that our infant son would freeze, we called Boston Standard, and Brad came out within half an hour of our call. He was really professional, patient, and good natured, despite the fact that we had our boiler out in a detached, freezing and dark cold room by the side of the house. When he discovered that our blower motor was broken, he was ingenious enough to figure out a short-term fix. He then ordered the new part, kept me updated about the part's arrival, and came back a few days later to fix the boiler. When the new part ended up being defective, he again was astute enough to figure out a work-around solution by reinstalling the old motor with a new capacitor. We're very impressed with the quality of service Brad provided. Not only did he know what he was doing, he was unfailingly polite, very responsive, and had great follow-through. While Boston Standard is probably not the cheapest, they certainly came through for us when we were in a dire situation.
Description of Work: Brad at Boston Standard did an emergency no heat call on a cold evening. He MacGuyver'd a solution to a broken motor and got us heat and hot water. He then returned a few days later to repair the motor. When the motor he had ordered was defective out of the box, he removed and installed the old motor with a new capacitor.

This was what I thought a fairly small job - replace a shower head (I provided new one) and clean out slow-running bathtub and sink drains. Mark could not have been more personable and knowledgeable. He worked very efficiently and cleaned the drains not only from their openings in the bathroom, but went down to the basement to very thoroughly clean out what must have been decades of debris that had slowly built up. I feel as if I have two new drains now. He also made some suggestions for replacing an aging furnace and water heater. He is a super ambassador for Boston Standard. My only reservation was the price. Because work was priced by the task and not by the hour, I thought it a bit high, but that could be because plumbing services are not something I use every year, and as one gets older and no longer upwardly mobile, many things seem expensive. Other than reservations about price, I am most confident in the quality of work performed and my experience with Boston Standard Plumbing & Heating.

Decided not to have Boston Standard Plumbing do the work and Angie's list refunded my money.
Description of Work: Had Boston & Standard Plumbing in for a 5 point toilet tune-up and the representative was polite and professional. However he could not do the tune-up because he felt the job was too involved and he gave me an estimate in order to have the required work completed. I decided to get a second opinion from another plumber. The second plumber completed the work in approximately 30 minutes and charged me 1/5th the price of the estimate from Boston & Standard Plumbing.

One man came out to assess situation. Set up appintment for another day. Brought intern. Did job with some dispatch. Completely replaced both faucets rather than repairing them. They were polite. Got the job done.

We had a plumbing emergency (broken shower valve leaked behind shower wall onto ceiling below) the day after we moved into our new house. We called Boston Standard upon seeing they had emergency services and Jeff arrived within a few hours. He diagnosed the problem and did a total plumbing inspection the same evening. We had them come back a few weeks later to fix that shower along with another one (luckily, Jeff caught that one before there was any damage) and to install a new toiler and a new gas dryer. Jeff and the others at Boston Standard were professional, efficient, and friendly. We are very happy with their work and would definitely call them again. Some reviews of them mention that they cost more than others, but we found that they were worth it.

This morning two of his guys showed up on time, with a replacement heater, did a really good job and replaced the heater within 3 hours. Highly recommended!
Description of Work: We had a leak from the water heater. We found this out late at night. Left a message and Joe called back after a couple of hours at around midnight. We talked about the details, I sent him some pictures of the heater and we set an appointment for the next morning. He was very helpful and very professional. In the mean time I shut the water to the heater and drained to make sure the leak does not flood the basement.

The plumber called and set up an appointment. He arrived on time, did the work efficiently (after providing accurate price estimates), and left. All went so well that i barely remember the visit.
Description of Work: I needed one toilet removed and another replaced. The one needing replacement had been difficult for other plumbers. Boston Standard plumbing had no difficulty with either project. All was accomplished in one efficient visit.

The job was not performed due to a medical emergency. They did say that if we went ahead with the job, the service charge would be deducted from the cost. Very disappointed that ad was not clear and had to pay service charge. Make sure to ask all questions prior to them coming to your house.
Description of Work: We only got an estimate from them. They charge $29.99 for an estimate. I thought the ad was not clear that they actually charged for estimate as I assumed that estimates were free. The ad stated they charge a service charge but it should have stated estimates were not free and that they charge a service fee just to go to your home.for this estimate. They actually ask for payment prior to giving you the estimate.

I poured the product into the sink drain as instructed. I had to repeat the process a few times. The drain was cleared a little, but I had to use a "Plumber's Helper" to complete the job.
Description of Work: It was more convenient for me to install the product myself. The company charged me $20 to ship the product to my home.

I just moved to Boston, and found these plumbers through the Angie's List Big Deal. Am I glad I did! They were fantastic--knowledgeable, professional, and friendly. The plumber and an apprentice arrived on time. I went through my list of small repairs that needed to be done, and they began fixing them one by one. They repaired the broken sink drains, and the toilets, which needed the pull adjusted. I called the Mr. Steam company, and the plumber did the troubleshooting with the company rep and got the system back up and running. Finally, they removed the bidet toilet--quite a process, given that it was connected to water/electricity. And they replaced the seat with one I had bought in advance. I especially appreciated that they took the time to show me how to fix the small mechanical problems, in case I need to in the future. I will definitely call them again for any plumbing needs.
Description of Work: The plumber and an apprentice removed the broken bidet-style toilet seat and replaced it with another seat. They also fixed many small things that were broken at no additional charge, including the sink drain, broken toilets, and the broken Mr. Steam shower steamer.

Mark came out and carefully went throughout the house to look at areas of concern. He was thorough, and explained how jobs could be tackled in an understandable way. There were things he noticed that I had not known (including the fact that we have no internal shut-off valves in the house), and explained why this would be a good idea to remedy. I did not feel pressured to agree to any of the jobs suggested, but happy to be given important information. In the end, I decided to have the toilet and sink removed for tile work, and then to have them replaced afterward. I had shut-off valves put in under the sinks in the kitchen and bath, a new kitchen faucet installed, new hoses for the washer and dryer, and a main shut-off valve for the house. As of today, everything has been done, except the re-install of the toilet and new vanity and the main shut-off valve. Mark was punctual,efficient and neat. He checked with me about any issue that came up before proceeding, I anticipate the next visit will go as smoothly as the first.
Description of Work: They came out to price and look over various jobs. We needed to have a toilet and sink removed from our bathroom, so that the wall tiles can be refinished. We also needed a new kitchen faucet installed. After the tile refinishing is complete, they will come back out to reinstall the toilet and install a new vanity.

Arrived early, but called first. Updated kitchen sink valves. Tested shower head -- again, low pressure. Need a part for the Grohe heating element -- said he would research part and get back to me. I also signed up for the "Peace of Mind Plan" ($149.95) which cut the total bill by 10%, and provided me a cost reduction for future service. The service was very good; I thought the price was on the high side. The original bill was $717.42, minus the $200 coupon (but I had already spent $99), so I saved approx. $100.00
Description of Work: Used the $99 coupon (for $200 worth of work). Service on my kitchen sink -- low pressure when cold water tap was turned on. Looked at my shower head and heating element (Grohe).
