Wanted a plumber on a Sunday; understood there would be a premium. Was given premium price on telephone. Service person came on time, was professional and I now have a workable kitchen sink (so needed for cooking).

The water pipes burst on January 5th due to my heater putting out cool air. I had to wait a week before Sears came out to fix the heater. When the heading was fixed I called Boston Standard adn they came out on January 16th. They replace two pipes(turned water on to see if there were any more links) they found ten more pipes that had burst. They couldn't do anything else until I had someone come out to remove the tile in the bathroom and the walls in the hall way( no basement). The house was bult in 1950. Once that was do, they continue there work. They replace all burst pipes. They were very neat and always cleaned up after themselves. I've used them again when my sink in the bathroom wouldn't drain. They came out fix the drain.

It went well. He was very professional and knowledgeable. It only required a minor repair. He was detained at another job so had to delay his arrival but called in advance to let me know, so I gave him an A grade on the punctuality.

Boston Standard made a mistake on their end about the scheduling date for our home. We took the days off to wait for them, only have them apologize and wasted 3 more days of waiting for the work to be done. Boston Standards' issued an apology to us and said they would give us an extra year of guarantee. However, with all that comes down we are not even sure if we ever wanted to call them again. They over charged for the furnance -- as we later on the $11,000 was extremely overpriced and they try to sell us up as a 92% high efficiency, when the model of the furnace is only 90%. We trusted Angie's List to provide worthy providers of services, this is the second time where I used Angie's List and had a terrible experience. We will never use Angie's List for any source of information again.

Dear [member name removed] , I appreciate you taking the time to review us and am sorry you feel that way, but there are a few inaccuracies I would like to correct in your review. Regarding the scheduling of your job, it was a simple miscommunication and in our opinion, was not our fault – your father waited home for 2 business days that we had never booked for the installation before you called to see where we were. You were largely unreachable and your father does not speak English so it made communication difficult, admittedly, and I apologize that we did not do a better job. Regarding the cost of the job, our price is exactly as we quoted and is no more or less than it should have been. Your project was no simple install and I suspect you may have received quotes after the install, but as it was, we came to your house when we said we would, provided a quote, and you signed that you wanted us to proceed. You had over 3 weeks to make your mind up from our first visit on September 12th and our install date of October 7th. About your system’s efficiency, it is 91.2%. My plumber made a mistake by saying 92% - the next smaller model is 92% and for that I apologize. If you would like some concession on our part for this mistake I am happy to discuss that. I bear responsibility for what is written on our quotes and am sorry that you did not get exactly what we quoted. When we extended your warranty as a courtesy, I hope it showed I am a reasonable person. I would like it if you don’t write us off, we are still here for you and we stand behind the work we did. Thank you for your time. Sincerely, Joseph Wood Boston Standard Company

We've had Boston Standard come twice, the first time the two technicians took care of several small problems, The most difficult involved squeezing into a dark basement crawl space to fix a pipe. Because we purchased the service contract we were able to call a second time for a heating question and paid the discount rate. All three guys were very accomodating and professional. They also put tags on our pipes in the basement so we can identify what they are for. They charge a per job rate rather than per hour so it's hard to compare prices.

Mike arrived on schedule and took the time to explain things in layman?s terms, patiently answered my questions, and clearly outlined my options. Everything about the process was easy. The appointments were scheduled quickly, the estimate was provided on the spot, the work was completed ahead of schedule, and there was no mess to clean. As someone who dreads home improvement projects, my expectations were exceeded. I am thrilled with my experience and the result and I will definitely use Mike again. If you want a plumber who is honest, knowledgeable, and professional and does high quality work at a reasonable price, I highly recommend that you call Boston Standard and ask for Mike.

I am a first time customer of Boston Standard... I had one immediate issue to fix (no heat in one zone) and had also requested quotes for possible future service and new installations. Jeff was very prompt, polite and professional. He was very quick to determine the problem and fix it. He seemed very knowledgeable about my inquiries in heating, A/C and plumbing and was willing to discuss to alternate solutions as well. As for the value, I did not price the job out. I cannot compare their cost to others, but was satisfied with the bill.

I can't say enough good things about Boston Standard. The owner and his employees are very professional. They explained all my air conditioning options, gave me a competitive quote on an air conditioning system installation and completed the work very quickly. They gave me such a sense of trust that I let them do the work while I was away on a business trip. When I returned home, the air conditioning units were installed, and my house was so clean it looked like no one had been there. I have used them a couple of times since then for smaller plumbing jobs, and they are always responsive, professional, and accommodating to my work schedule. I highly recommend them and will be using them again in the future.

I have used Boston Standard since 20ll. They have done both large and small jobs for me. I have an offer on the house and the home inspector's report had a number of things that might be in need of attention. The circulator pump had an on and off slight weeping problem that turned into a drip after the home inspection. I told them that I was unsure at this time if the purchaser wanted to keep or replace the heating system. They recommended a new boiler due to it's age and condition. They also tightened the water shut off valve that was weeping. I was told, to repair this problem might require the city to shut down the water so we decided not to work on it and to watch and see if the tightening would stop the weeping. They looked at the basement sink faucet that was said to have a drip but they could not find a shut off valve for it and said it would require draining the system. Because it was late in the afternoon and I was unsure if the potential new owner would even want to keep the old sink, we decided not to do the work. They recommended having this work done in the future. I asked them to write their recommendations for future work down so I could give it to the new owner. Since this report, I have been asked by the potential buyer to replace the circulator pump. I have called Boston Standard two times asking for a estimate for this pump so I can have an idea of how much it will cost me and they have not returned my calls yet. I'm not sure if they are reluctant because I did not have anything done this time or if they are trying to find out the cost since it is an old system. I have told the buyer that I would have the pump replaced and hope to hear from Boston Standard soon! UPDATE: Returned all my calls. Just want to update my last report to say that Boston Standard did return all my calls but not to my home phone. They had my cell phone number and used that to respond to my calls. Because I do not live in the house where I have had the work done, I had given them my cell phone to use if they were running late for our appointments otherwise, I explained, I do not use it. It is understandable how that could have been forgotten since I am in the minority when it comes to cell phone use. I have set up an appointment with them and will write a review after the work is done.
Description of Work: They reviewed a home inspection report and tightened the water shut off valve. They also made recommendations for future work.

After a cursory look, they decided to write up an estimate for replacing (!!) the kitchen faucet, or, after I insisted that they first attempt to clean out the line to the faucet and perhaps replace the ceramic mixing valve in the faucet (which they did not have in the truck.) They then, armed now with two estimates, attempted to sell me an annual maintenance plan, which would give me a discount on their services (a generous description of what they did,) priority emergency coverage, blah, blah blah... So, they were trying to sell me on their expert "service" before they had lifted a wrench to deal with the initial issues. I wisely passed and asked them to please address the sink faucet issue, the primary reason that I had purchased the Angie's List coupon..Finally they started on the sink, and after some confused trouble shooting techniques, they removed the line from down below the sink, cleaned out a strainer there, and slightly improved the water flow. I asked, again, if they could clean out the mixing valve in the faucet body as I suspected that whatever had clogged up the lower strainer was probably blocking up the mixing valve. He said that the allen screw on the faucet was stripped (it wasn't...once he found the proper sized allen wrench) and then he was unable to pull the handle up to gain access to the valve. He then pronounced the ten year old Franke faucet old and unfixable (really? a ten year faucet??) and that I should replace it. They put everything back together, picked up their tools, had me sign some paperwork, and left. I didn't dare to ask them about the bathroom sink stopper problem which I had shown them earlier. Even that seemed to be too challenging for them. I am now sitting in my kitchen, the kitchen sink problem basically unchanged, my bathroom sink stopper still not working and $99 poorer. I have seldom seen two less competent "tradesmen" (I apologize to all the real tradesmen of the world for using this word to describe them) than these two. They seemed unable to grasp even the most basic aspect of "repair" and were focused on replacing and selling service plans. I would not have been surprised if Moe had shown up to complete the trio. The WORST experience I have ever had with an Angie's List service!
Description of Work: Two "plumbers" showed up at the agreed upon time. I explained to and showed them what I hoped for them to accomplish;, A.) attempt to restore a normal flow of water from the kitchen faucet(it had nearly slowed to a fast drip) and B.) adjust the pull stopper on one of the bathroom sinks, a matter of a proper adjustment which has thus far eluded my limited plumbing skills.

However, when they returned they only brought the part for one issue and seemed to have forgotten about the other though they claimced after some hemming and hawing that they were checking on it. I had to call them several days later to then learn that they couldn't locate the part and had given up. Back office tried to be responsive but guy onsite was a loser.

Dear member, Thank you for your review, it is good to learn that the technician with whom you worked was able to diagnose both of your issues correctly and fix your shower. I am sorry to hear that he was unable to locate the manufacturer of the faucet in order to repair the second issue. He did take a photo of the faucet (as it was unlabeled) and share it with multiple supply houses in order to try and identify the brand and order your repair parts but, as you note, he was unable to identify the brand. I have spoken with the technician and asked him to make sure that he communicates as quickly as possible when he runs into issues like this to keep customers informed as he searches for replacement parts. We are constantly trying to improve and your review will be used in our staff meeting to discuss how essential constant communication with our customers is. We felt it was a total waste. Turns out, we didn’t even need the water heater flush. It seemed to be more of a sales appointment and they talked for an hour about all the things we needed to do to our plumbing. I purchased a big deal coupon for 200 dollars worth of service and the job cost an additional 75 dollars. We had a bathroom drain that we were unable to snake ourselves- we thought there was something solid in the drain but it turns out the clog was just a little farther than our snake would reach. We had to wait a while to schedule because of the holidays and because there were 2 snow storms that caused plumbing issues and they were very busy. We were fine with this- we didn't feel it was a priority. The person doing the scheduling did give us the option of "fitting it in", but we were fine with waiting a little while. They called before arriving and arrived on the early side of the window. The job was completed quickly- in way under an hour. There were muddy boot prints left on the bathroom floor however. It seemed expensive for a simple quick job, but in the end it only ended up costing about 150 dollars due to the coupon.

When an unexpected issue arose (the defective trap) the problem was explained and I was notified in advance of the additional cost. The technician arrived on site and on time. He inspected the first toilet and found it needed to be rebuilt due to the flapper no longer working properly. This was the cause for an ongoing water leak. As a preventive measure, the technician was also asked to rebuild a second Kohler toilet in our home. The technician provided a detail quote for the entire job. Once the job and price were agreed, the technician rebuilt each toilet and inspected them to ensure they were operating properly. Both are working fine at this time. This is the second time we have used Boston Standard for plumbing jobs in our home and continue to be very pleased with their services. Everyone on staff is courteous and friendly. The technicians are professional and provide a high quality of work. .

Dear member, Thank you for taking the time to review the services that we provided you in September 2013. We take all reviews and feedback seriously and appreciate that you have provided us with your feedback. I am happy to see that you were pleased with our professionalism- we strive to provide excellent service to all customers. While I always hope that we are A rated across the board, I see that price was an area of concern for you. We take all possible steps to keep our prices reasonable and have not increased our prices in a few years, we will continue to work on maintaining reasonable pricing for our services. Thank you again for your feedback and have a wonderful holiday season. Regards, Laura Wood Boston Standard Company

The provider was prompt, professional and courteous. However, their prices were so far from reasonable as to be ridiculous. I don't need two guys. One would be fine. I don't need a service plan. I don't need any parts... they're all provided. I don't need a big firm. I just need two brand new toilets (provided) installed, one completely new construction, with the flange in place, one on an old flange. The water supply valves are already done. The toilets need to be set in place and leveled and bolted down. That's it. There was also the installation of one gas fitting, a single interior valve on a new existing pipe, to provide shut off for a gas stove. That's it. This entire project would be two hours of labor for an experienced plumber. As a DYI it might take 3-4 max. Very disappointed in the estimate which should have been less than half. Be very careful when selecting a big company for a small job. IMHO - You're much better off hiring a small, local contractor.
Description of Work: Gave me an estimate.

Dear [member name removed], Thank you for taking the time to review us and thank you for the opportunity to serve you. We use reviews as a measure of how we are doing and what we can do better and your review will be taken into account. I do however have a few corrections I would like to make. The job was for the installation of (2) customer supplied toilets, (1) closet flange replacement where the existing flange was too low in the floor for a proper install, and (1) installation of a customer supplied gas stove and (1) emergency shutoff for the new gas stove installation. Plumbing jobs often look simple and then turn into something far more difficult - the advantage to using Boston Standard is that if you hired us to do the job we would not increase the cost on you under any circumstances even if it required more time than expected, more parts or cross-town trips to get what we need. I have reviewed the quote that we provided and found that my plumber was right in line with what I would do if I came there myself. As you mentioned, using two plumbers does cost more, and there are many instances when we don't need two people to complete a job but there are also many instances where having two people on a job is a blessing. We staff each truck with two plumbers not only to make the job go more smoothly and but also to train the next generation of plumbers for our company and for your benefit, and if we skipped this step we could likely save some money and thus lower our cost but we have chosen to go the other way and I stand behind that decision. I would love the opportunity to work with you in the future but respect your opinion. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year. Sincerely, Joseph Wood Boston Standard Co. 617-797-1316 c [hyperlink removed]

We met with a representative of Boston Standard & Plumbing and he was very punctual. He laid out all the details of the job for installing a new laundry hook up to our kitchen sink. This would have provided drainage, electrical outlets and proper ventilation. We ultimately decided not to have the work done, but the prompt response and overall service level was very good. We would love to use them in the future.

They were awesome. They had to come back to make the stove fit better to the wall, which they did.
