I wanted to have a hood (for the stove) ducted to the outside. While making a hole in the wall, the tech *HIT A GAS PIPE*! This was a terrifying moment since there could have been an explosion! The tech and the company stated their method of using the feeler bit was correct, however, I talked to other plumbers who said they usually cut out a small piece of the dry wall to check behind the wall or use sensor/detector. The company fixed the gas pipe, though it should have *never* happened in the first place. On the finished work, the damper (on the outside) flaps during high wind and when I called the company they stated it would be another service call and will cost an extra $225.

Dear [member name removed], Thank you for your review. We acknowledge the error related to the gas pipe, however our method used was common and correct. We have repaired the space and fixed the drywall, and apologize again for the inconvenience as it was not intentional. We installed the vent as it was designed to be installed and were unaware that your home is in a high-wind area. As mentioned, to adjust the damper requires a special truck, ladder and two men. Unfortunately it is not a simple task or easy access that we can just stop by and take care of for free. I am sorry. Kind Regards, Laura Wood Boston Standard Company

I had gotten no less than probably 10 estimates on the job, and they were all around $500 for the job. The gentleman came in and said that it would have been $800 on the job. I knew what needed to be done after getting the appraisals. I felt that he didn't want to do it that day, and I had paid $100 for $200 off of the service. I felt like they added the $100 back in. The difference was huge based on what other people had told me. It left me without being able to use my voucher because it was too expensive. He said that is what he charges. I asked if he charges by the hour or by the job. He first said it would be by the hour, then he said it was by the job. I explained what I needed when we made the appointment, then when he came to the house, and I asked what they charged by the hour, he said it would be $100 per hour, and I asked how long it would take, he said it would take 4 hours, so I didn't understand how that added up to $800. Then he said he would charge by the job. I felt like it was a trick. I thought I had paid $99 so I was stuck paying that or I loose the $99, and I lost that. I then had to pay $30 out of my pocket. They didn't respond right away. I called on a Wednesday, and they showed up on a Monday or Tuesday.

I have purchased a standard faucet fixture from Home Depot to be replaced in the bathroom sink. The technician had a very difficult time with the job and they were there for quite a long time. When they were down they did clean up. I noticed that the water handles still seemed loose, but I was told that this was ok for these fixtures. Unfortunately I just noticed leaking under the sink, but when I called them I was told I am a couple of days past the 12 month warrantee. So I will find another plumber to come fix problem.

The crews are very good and professional. But I am not happy that the company did not tell me in advance that weekend appointment is considered as emergency and I have to pay 220 dollars for the so-called emergency service. I ended up paying more for the service than paying for my washer or dryer. Even though the service is great but it is hard for me to recommend them.

They came and were incredibly arrogant. They, for reasons unknown, wanted to see the furnaces for the other two units. They told me they needed to be replaced and estimated a huge price way over what it would have cost, plus, having had furnaces recently cleaned and tuned, I knew they were in perfectly good shape and would be good for another 5-10 years. Before they replace the faucet, they showed me an estimate for the work. They had two columns, one for the work to be done that day and another if I signed up for a service contract. When they compared the prices, they pointed to what they said was the bottom line. What they didn't tell me was what he pointed to was the price of the last item of a list of other items, fooling into thinking it was the total, which is wasn't. The amount he pointed to was something like 137.00, a reasonable price for the job. So I OK'd it. After they installed the faucet, they presented me a bill of over $300.00. I could see that they had added up all the other costs and what they showed me was only the last item on the list, NOT the total. I was outraged since it was obviously a con job to make me think the whole job would cost what the last item cost, NOT the total. When I complained to the plumber, he was rude, dismissive and arrogant. Although I've been in the Real Estate business for over 40 years, he disparaged me as not knowing what I was talking about. His attitude was basically the heck with you. I called the owner of the company, Joe Wood, who was also belligerent on the phone and said he'd call back when he'd spoken to the plumber that he had sent to me. Since I had been given this company as a referral from an associate, I assumed this particular plumber was some kind a rogue plumber. When he called back, he stood behind this dishonest plumber and told me the guy was one of his best and to, basically, get off the phone and don't bother me, you stupid client. I have since contacted other folks in the industry who say they do this all the time and prey on folks who don't know the going rate on plumbing, HVAC or other tasks. Unfortunately for them, I know all about what standard rates and all they said was tough for me and blew me off. I would never, ever, use these dishonest bait-and-switchers and I advise anyone to use some other company who cares about you and doing a job for a fair price. These guys are rip-off artist. Even the bull he slung about my perfectly good furnaces were an attempt to replace good furnaces for an outrageous amount of money when they didn't need it. I caught them at their scam and they didn't like it much. I would have taken them to small claims, but it wouldn't have been worth the $300.00 I could show evidence of a con by including letters and cost estimates from any number of other plumbers I've used over the years, so I just reported them to the Attorney General's office. Don't use this company. They don't care about you, only how much money they can squeeze out of unsuspecting and novices without knowledge of what good plumbers charge for the same work. I hate business like this, and sadly, there are some like these rip-off artists with no integrity and no honesty. Stay away from Joe Wood and Boston Standard. They will do you bad.
Description of Work: While I had more work to do, I stopped them when they bait and switched me regarding the cost of the total work. They charged me $300.00 for labor only on a kitchen faucet I had purchased. The job was an $85 to $100 job at the most, and I know since I have five rental units and have replaced kitchen faucets many times over the last 46 years.

It was easy to schedule. The fellow who came was right on time. He did a good job. He said that the furnace might need a new part, but that to replace the part w/b a separate service call. It would have been nice if he could have taken care of it then and there; I would have been happy to pay the extra. Otherwise, he was very thorough. The furnace works well. Thanks!

I apologize that the technician was unable to replace the part on-site at the same time, we aim to carry as many parts on the trucks as possible but sometimes we just don't have the exact part on-hand. I tried really hard to not use Boston Standard. They're price seemed too reasonable for what we were doing, especially in light of the other 5 quotes I received. They were the lowest quote we received, and I was concerned that the lowest quote would be the "lowest level of service." Our house was built in 1917 and presented some certain challenges for a central heating and AC system. So I looked long and hard for a reason to not use them. Thankfully, I couldn't find a reason. They had a better installation/labor warranty than anyone else, the equipment was top-notch, and most of the reviews I could find for them were positive; and for those that weren't, management seemed to respond quickly and fairly--taking responsibility for times that they might have dropped the ball, but being honest in those responses and forthright all the way. Now that the work is complete, I can say that I am EXTREMELY happy with the job they did. Everybody from the estimator through the installation team and the administrative support staff were right on their game. I emailed a question over a weekend, not expecting a response, yet still received on on a Saturday afternoon. We did run into a surprise with the project, and they weren't able to complete it as we had initially hoped. Or I should say, they could have completed it that way (with two zones) however after all the ductwork was removed and they could see what exactly they were working with, they clearly explained why they didn't recommend doing so, and I'm so happy I took their advice. I had expressed some frustration/disappointment that we wouldn't be able to do two zones as had originally been proposed (disappointment, but I fully understood why it wouldn't work well,) and the owner even called on a Sunday to make sure I was ok with the solution, and to ensure I didn't have any further questions or concerns. As of now, we have had the system fully installed for a week. I've tested it with both heat and AC, and I can say that it performs better than I expected, and even better than Boston Standard said it would. In short, I would recommend them without hesitation.

Two men arrived on time and got right to work on servicing my boiler. I called Boston Standard for an annual cleaning of my system because of their positive reviews on Angies List. The men were very personal, friendly, and professional. They wore protective bags over their shoes to keep my floors clean which I appreciated. They did a thorough check and cleaning which took about an hour to complete. They gave me advice and tips on my case and I would definitely recommend them to anyone needing help with plumbing or heating issues.

I called Boston Standard plumbing and heating to look at my steam heating system because it was leaking and banging terribly. Justin Richards showed up for them on time for his appointment and was polite. He looked at the system and I explained to him what I thought what the problem was( I have experience with these systems), which was a simple pipe replacement an improvement in the pipe pitch. He agreed with my thoughts on the matter and investigated it thoroughly going into small crawl spaces to map out the entire system, which was impressive. He wrote up a estimate on the spot which was very reasonable. I asked him to do the job and he told me to call the office an they would schedule a day and time then he would come and do the job, which I did. He came back on time with another plumber an went to work. In a few hours I had a heating system that wasn't leaking and quiet as a mouse. Justin even adjusted a few radiators and the water pressure level on my heating system. I'm veryhappy

Technicians arrived on time and seemed very polite. Fifteen minutes into the inspection the technician pointed out a potential problem with the pilot thermocouple saying it had some "discoloration" and could fail. Amazingly he had already written up a bill annotating the replacement cost to replace the thermocouple at a cost of over $200.00! However, if I signed on to a 3 year service plan the replacement cost for the thermocouple would be waived but at a cost of over $400.00. Now Mind you, you can buy a replacement thermocouple at any hardware store or home improvement store for approximately $11.00 and replace it yourself if your somewhat mechanically inclined (easy to do). As soon as I opted not to replace the part or sign on to a service plan the inspection came to an abrupt end. I doubt all the inspection points listed in the "deal" were performed. The technicians were here and gone within a half hour! Wished I had read more reviews before buying this deal. It seems other people had issues with services being overpriced. How is this company so highly rated? Overall I was Disappointed with the service.

The workers were very nice but charged an absurd amount of money for what they did. Furthermore they did a crap job. To replace the shutoff valve for the toilet they had to take the toilet out. Well, when they put it back in they didn't seal it correctly and whenever somebody flushed the toilet in my building I smelled it thoughout my apartment. Furthermore I had no problems with my sink draining until they put in the new one. Now it doesn't drain. I called and complained and they sent another guy to come fix it. He fixed the seals on the toilet to stop the awful smells but couldn't fix the drain in the sink. He also charged me another absurd amount of money for his effort too. So my sink still doesn't drain and I'm over a grand poorer for the experience. Shoddy work and to top it off they're overpriced and greedy (xxxx). Don't EVER use this company unless there really is no other plumber on the face of the earth.

Dear [member name remove], Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. We understand how you feel and are sorry that you were left unsatisfied, I wish that you had contacted us so we could have discussed your concerns directly with you at the time that the work was completed. There are a few parts related to the service that you did not mention in your review. The first is that you insisted that we do the install without coming out for an appointment to provide a quote first, you wanted it done on a specific day and we were able to accommodate that request. In hindsight, we should have stuck to our standard process and required a site visit first, my apologies for that. We installed the water heater and toilet quickly due to having two technicians on-site; in order to complete the install on the day that you desired that was the most efficient way to meet your needs. We strive to make every customer happy, as that is our goal for each project that our team works on. I am sorry that you were unhappy. Laura Wood Boston Standard Company

A year ago I hired Boston standard to replace an electric heat pump and was very happy with the services provided. This time around they left me pulling my hair out. THE JOB: I was out of the country when the hot water in one of our rental units failed. I called their emergency line, paid there emergency fee and requested that a technician come out and have a look. The first question he asked me was "does this really have to happen today?" After I said yes, he came by but gave excuses around why he couldn't access our building and said he'd have to come back tomorrow. When he finally took a look he found 1 inch of water on the basement floor, told me he couldn't help until the floor was dried and suggested that I call disaster recovery....I called several other plumbers for reference and they laughed saying "It's an inch of water....and he's a plumber." This made sense to me so I called him back and convinced him that he could mop up the water and replace the hot water heater. They overpriced the job knowing I had no other option ($2000) and replaced the water heater. THE ISSUE: Soon after my tenants reported that there was hot water in the showers, but not in the sink/dishwasher. They came back out to take a look and after 3 hours on a Saturday had no answer. This morning (the morning after the inspection mentioned above took place) I woke up to find out that there are now 2 other units in the building that don't have hot water either. (one of which was a unit that was replaced last month). As a common consumer with no plumbing knowledge its hard not to think that this is likely the result of something the technician did while performing his assessment (which included opening and shutting various valves in the building). When I called Joe the owner he insisted that because I (knowing nothing about plumbing) had no PROOF that the issue was their fault, we had to ASSUME it wasn't and I would be responsible for all subsequent visit payments until or unless THEY determined that the issue was their fault (at their discretion). I offered a middle ground...I would pay for HALF of the services until we got to the root cause, then ALL of the backpay if we determined the issue was not their fault. I was ready to compromise and work this out but after an insulting conversation that ruined my Sunday, Joe hung up on me without a resolution. CONCLUSION: I'm back to where I started (less $2000 and 2 p***** off neighbors)...searching for a reliable plumber on Angie's list to help me with my hot water heater problems. I will certainly not be doing business this with company in the future.

Hello Angie's List Members, Get ready for a long one here! Our first visit here was on St. Anthony's Feast in the North End and my plumber simply could not get access to the home to do the work - no how, no way. When we returned to see the job we encountered a basement that was full of water and my plumber made a judgement call not to install the tank without getting the water cleaned up. As noted in the review, [member name removed] thinks we should have cleaned it up, and he is entitled to that opinion, but we don't keep things on the truck to pump down basements... space is limited! I don't think we should be penalized for that. When it came time to do the water heater and [member name removed] and I spoke, I told him the cost upfront. I also gave him 1/2 off his prior emergency charge for the inconvenience and a discount on the tank because he was quite upset. I gave him a quote of $2000 to which he agreed, and is very fair for the work done. There was no taking advantage of him in this matter, so I thoroughly dispute this fact. About 2-3 weeks later, [member name removed]calls with no hot water at one of his tenant's fixtures... only one. We sent our plumber out on a Saturday and he spent 3 hours looking for the cause of this, maybe a closed valve or maybe a clogged line, but we could not determine the source of the issue and didn't have access to all the units to do a thorough diagnostic. Our plumber did an in-depth diagnostic and eliminated many things, including our water heater. Since there was nothing (besides a coincidence) to show or prove that our work caused this, we told [member name removed] he was responsible for the emergency charge, but he declined to pay. I didn't press the issue as I knew from our prior experience he was a tough customer. My plumber told me this and I told him to leave the job and I'll deal with this on Monday. The next day, [member name removed] gets a call from other building owners saying they have no hot water (all on separate water heaters that also may have been flooded) and calls us back Sunday and demands we return to the job site. I then got on the phone with [member name removed] and told him the same thing we covered before: If we find it to be an error or omission on our part, no charge. If it is unrelated, you'll have to pay. I also said that since we've already put our time and money on the line (by not collecting money and assuming it is our defect on the earlier visit), that it was his turn to pay - he'd need to not only pay for our $180 charge from the other visit but be prepared to pay for this one. We then went back and forth for about 20 minutes battling over the charges. I repeated to him that if anything turned out to be our fault that he wouldn't pay anything at all, but he'd need to make us square since everything we saw, and all logic, was now pointing to it not being an issue with our work, but we couldn't come to any reasonable agreement. I then informed [member name removed] that I felt it best we part ways since I didn't find him reasonable or willing to compromise, and I felt the likelihood of us making him a happy customer was slim. I could not come to a common resolution with this customer and I have asked him to inform me of what the issue was and he has declined to do so thus far. I am willing to refund him any costs incurred - by any other plumbing outfit - that proves this was an issue with our work, but [member name removed] in his infinite wisdom has declined to take me up on that offer. To anyone who has read this far, you should know if you can't tell already, I care very much about making sure our customers are satisfied. [member name removed] was unable to be consoled and would not even entertain the thought that this was unrelated to our work, and for that sort of customer, the bar is set in a location where the only outcome for us was a bad review that borders on a personal crusade. I welcome any and all future communications on this matter. You can reach my cell phone at any reasonable time of day at: 617-797-1316. Thank you, Joseph C, Wood Boston Standard Company

The communication if great, the office staff is very friendly and efficient and they are happy to use email if that's your preference. The work took place when scheduled and the worked were very good at cleaning up after themselves, which is important as this is a pretty dirty job. My only disappointment is the price, it's definitely higher than average for the area.

They were the only company of my Big Deals at the time that ever called me back. I am pretty sure that I didn't have enough money at the time to pay for the extra cost.

On all these occasions they've been prompt, helpful, pleasant; and refrained from making fun of our ignorance at points when a snicker must have been almost irresistible. Their charges are also very reasonable--several times charging only for a service call, but doing much more. (Sorry no dollar am't , can't find my receipts.) I also should thank the most recent--kitchen sink--guy, who made interesting conversation with me and was nice to the cats.
Description of Work: One of many calls: I think this one was the time I couldn't figure out how I'd messed up my own thermostat; and I don't think they even charged. Previously they cleaned the bottom of and relit the water heater and other things; more recently they helped when the a/c went blooey (tech term for Ignorant Customer Problem) and fixed leak under kitchen sink. smog with thermostat a/c.. smtg with flood stater now got appt 4/28 mon 10-12 am for g disposal ask bat sump pump maintenance

I purchased the deal to use at my mother’s house. They were excellent. They were very professional and we ended up hiring them to replace some toilets. They worked well with my mother who is elderly and even made recommendations for plumbing for the elderly.

We scheduled an appointment but the price was too high. Kitchen faucet and garbage disposal: ~$950. Our landlords did not want to pay this price. Otherwise, everything else was highly professional. Great job, Boston Standard!

Scheduling an air conditioning service call during a heat wave was challenging but Boston Standard made every effort to find a flexible time within 10 days. I received reminder call the day before and the workmen arrrived on time. They were friendly but focused on diagnosing the problems. While working they carefully explained their findings and efforts to get my system working. It was difficult servicing my unit--cleaning the electric coils which were severely impacting my system. The power was fully restored and cool air was blowing immediately. I couldn't have asked more from Mike Wells and Anthony Hound. So professional and helpful! Ask for them!
Description of Work: Diagnosed one obvious problem within minutes concerning one of my air conditioning condensers. Then checked out all other issues which might be causing problem. Handled other problems including cleaning coils and showed how to change filters (while educating on how to determine if filter needs changes. Wrote down size of filters and type of filter to buy. Cleaned up afterwork. Everything was professionally done. The service was excellent, very easy to do business with. I completely trust Boston Standard to stand by their work.
