E & S Services cleared our back yard. We made a house purchase in the fall, and the yard was covered in leaves, so the very poor condition of the yard was not apparent until the house was purchased and leaves removed. Most of the yard was not usable due to the piles of stones and dirt, piles of rotting wood left from past contractors, and a very large raised garden bed that was full of more stones and dirt, and was covered in thickets and poison ivy. I called several services for quotes, and Steve Mossey of E & S Services provided the most comprehensive and well-defined quote of all that we reviewed. Additionally, he had the best pricing. One company matched his price, but hadn't provided a comprehensive list of services to be performed, as Steve had done. Ed, the backhoe operator (or better, expert!) showed up on the scheduled day, on time, and was professional and very polite. He had to maneuver a very large backhoe into a very small area - and we were VERY impressed - Ed was able to glide that massive machine around a small corner, and work in a confined area with ease. He took out rock piles, an aging in-ground 3-tiered fountain, and was advancing toward the raised garden bed, when, in the center of the yard, just under his right front tire, the ground just caved in. Ed had gotten the backhoe in reverse, propped it up onto it's supports, and had checked it out before I even realized that there was an issue. There is a lot of groundwater in our area, and the first concern is that it was a sinkhole. Ed warned us to stay away from the edge, and jumped down into the hole to check it out. (Yes - it was THAT big!) With Ed's observations with a flashlight from inside the hole, and some information provided by a next door neighbor, we realized that it was a septic system from 40 years prior, which, clearly, had never been properly filled in. After determining the size and structure of the system, which had been covered by a cap and a few inches of dirt, Ed and Steve decided the best option for us was to deal with it properly, immediately. With our approval, Ed cleared it out, and filled it in properly, as it should have been done decades ago. Thankfully we still had enough excess dirt available on-site! After that, he compacted it down really well (heavy backhoes make quick work of that!) and proceeded to finish the rest of the job. The professionalism and level of work of E & S Services is exceptional. iIf there were a grade higher than an A+, we would give it to them!
