Our rental property's door was busted open by the fire department at 3 AM due to fire alarm malfunctioning and the tenant was not at home. I was notified of the damaged at 7:30 AM by the tenant that the front door lock was broken, the door was damaged, and the door frame was trashed. The tenant cannot close the door and the outside temperature was below 15 F. I scrambled to call up the contractors on Angie list starting around 8:30 AM. I left everyone a message and Rick called me back at around 9:30 AM and agreed to go see the property right away. He was at the property around 10:15 AM and called me and gave me a price quote. Due to the emergency, he did not mark up the door and even give me some discounts. I gave him the go ahead and he immediately went to pick up the door and other supplies and back to the property to work at around 12 PM. I arrived at property at around 1 PM. He had the door fixed by 3 PM with brand new lock, door, and door frame. It was professionally and efficiently done. He even offer to check the fire alarms for me and will make referral to a certified electrician, if fix is needed. I can't thank him enough for saving my day!
Description of Work: Rick replaced the damaged front door, the lock, and the door frame and properly sealed it during an emergency situation, see below.

It should be noted that we did all the windows, so there is no need for a "re-hire" for this.

Rick kept in touch via email and always showed up when he said he would. He did the work as described, for the stated price, And finished when he said he would. I am very happy with the work, and will be having him do more work in the future.
Description of Work: Rick removed two sliding patio doors in my living room, and replaced with new Harvey doors as specified by my Condo association. He installed replacement trim on inside and stained trim on outside. Earlier this year, he replaced my front storm door, again in compliance with codo specifications. Also, removed carpet on stairs and replaced with oak treads

A homeowner's nightmare! We are first time homeowners who wanted to remodel a 50 year old kitchen. Rick Johnson from Sky's the limit was recommended to us by my boss at work. She had gotten some small stuff done around the house and felt he did ok. He charged us $75 to come down to the house. In the beginning, we were so impressed with his sweet talk that we did not even get quotes from other contractors. We were hesitant to go ahead with the project regarding dust issues as my wife was pregnant but we were assured by him that he would seal off construction area. This is where the problems started. He showed up on a Saturday and said he would like to demo few cabinets. We said OK and the next thing we know he was taking down a wall and there was dust everywhere. We were not even prepared for this demo and he had not sealed off the place. The next time before he came we asked him to make sure he seals off the place. This is where everything went downhill. He threatened that he would not come to work if you care some much about dust! and quot;He went on to say that I can't help it if your wife is pregnant. It is not my problemand quot; The sweet talker had just turned sour. He freaked us out. We had to beg him to come back to work. He had already taken the entire amount for the cabinets $10K and also another $4k(out of $6k) for the first phase. The minute he got the money from us he started treating us like his slaves. He started working 2 or 3 times a week for 3 or 4 hours. We told him that we don't mind his schedule as long as he finishes the job and does good quality work. The cabinets he installed were of the poorest quality. He has a heavy hand and does know when to take his finger off the trigger of a drill. He would constantly overdrill into the cabinets and put holes into brand new cabinets. He then covered those big holes with putty trying to patch them and it ended up looking as ugly as possible. We were supposed to get custom black cabinets from the manufacturer for the island. He cheated us by buying regular cabinets and spray painting them with cheap black paint from lowe's. Today the paint is peeling off little by little. He even put cracks and dents into a couple of cabinets during installation. For little things like removing subfloors and installing lights he started demanding huge amounts of money. He started demanding remaining amount of money for the project without completing various aspects of the project. He wanted me to pay up the entire amount for the granite even before the installation had taken place. When I refused he threatened to stall the installation of the granite. This started getting us suspicious of his intentions. I was forced to give him the money. That day we realized that he took the entire amount from us and vacated the premises with his tools. Apparently, he reacted this way because we refused his quotes for plumbing and electrical as he was charging too much. He also encouraged me not to get permits for plumbing. I put a stop payment on a check for $400 as that was the only money I could save. He has robbed me of thousands without giving me a finished product. He threatened me with a lien for the $400 that he feels I owe him. Can you believe it! We had asked him to install bamboo floors in the kitchen which he had agreed to. This was to be done before the granite install as the island was oversized granite at 10X4 feet. One end of it was supposed to be on posts, the other half was supposed to rest on cabinets. He dragged his feet till the end with the flooring and had th installers install the 800lb granite on temporary studs. The next day he sent me an email that he won't do the floors. He had planned it all along to screw us up with that. He expected us bow to his every demand. Once i started pushing back he started jeopardizing the project. The quality of his work was horrible as we realized in the days following his abandoning of the project. 1) Simple things like electric outlets were not properly installed. They were not flush with the wall and were crooked. 2) The french door was not insulated. There was a draft of cold air coming through. 3) His trigger happy finger nailed straight through the subfloor that he installed due to which i had to renail most of it. 4) Even little things like applying drywall was uneven. These are only some of the things that are horribly wrong. He has stopped responding to phone calls, emails and mails. He has also not provided us with warranty for any of the items he installed. I also did get my electrical panel replaced through him. He subcontracted it to an electrician who did a wonderful job. As long as he does not do the work you will be fine. Bottomline he can do little things around the house but he is not experienced for projects like this. He will brag about things he has done for others but as far as I am concerned, that is total bs. This guy has taken us for the ride of our lives in the first few months of homeownership. I missed out on a few months of some beautiful pregnancy time because of the stress he put me through. Save yourselves time and money. Avoid like the plague. Look elsewhere. Don't make the mistakes I made as a new homeowner. Never pay more than 1/3rd of the project amount as first payment and alsways talk to multiple contractors before deciding. Update 3/20/2013: Since http://aswinsaliar.com seems to be in the works and claims are being made I thought I will update with a copy of a letter that was sent to sky's the limit in December outlining in detail all my grievances. No response was given to this letter. I will also upload delivery proof.
Description of Work: Here is a list of various aspects of the projects: 1) Remove wall between kitchen and dining room to create open kitchen. 2)Create an opening in the load bearing wall to open up kitchen to living room and install LVL beams for support. 3)Remove existing window and install french door for future deck. 4)Completely demo cabinets and install new cabinets. 5)Install oversized island and granite countertop.

Response from Skys The Limit
Here is a classic example of someone wanting "Champaign, not on a beer budget, but on someone else's tab". I will briefly answer this gentleman's allegations, as he lists. My answers and all related documents, e mails, photo's and more can be viewed at http://aswinisaliar.com This site will be generated as quickly as my time allows. * The work description is vaguely accurate. * The approximate cost is partial, and involves several sub contractors and companies. * Referral to us was not only by his boss, but also his realtor that we have worked with for several years. The scope of the worked we have performed is vast, and no less complicated than a simple kitchen. I was forewarned of this persons unreasonable & demanding attitude, but was swayed by what could have been a nice project. * The $75 fee was paid to me to drive to Burlington twice, review his 81 page professional home inspection and then to comment on their findings.(this report will be on web site) * Sweet talker.. please, only one quote?...even I get more than one. In e mail of 10/3/12, I suggested he get more quotes If needed. * The project was scheduled to commence (in advance) and agreed to, a follow up e mail to confirm was sent the day before.( emails will be on web site) The completion deadline was marked, and tight to begin with. If nothing else I will be the first contractor that is wronged for starting as scheduled. Very little was done on the first day, the cabinets were still filled with contents and I had to empty them out, place food, pots, pans in box's and move to an other area in the house.. really ! * Common sense aside, I forewarned them that any construction can and will cause dust. Specific guidelines were agreed to regarding this issue. ( e mail will be on web site). Partial of e mail below "Once we start the project consider the dining room , kitchen, Living room and sunroom to be area's that you should not enter, or have anything that you want to remain dust free. These area should be avoided until the entire project is completed. You can move your refrigerator into an area other than these listed, so you can maintain your perishables. Once these area's are prepared let me know and I will schedule the work." This is hardly a threat, just a simple directive. * 2012 was a year with expecting moms & renovations.. I told this gentleman the same thing I tell everyone. Whether demo, painting, flooring what ever.. I am not a doctor, if you have any questions regarding your project and its hazards, if any.. ask a doctor or postpone the project, I cannot provide answers to your medical concerns. *He had to beg me to go back to work...WOW dramatic. all dated e mails will be on web site, there was no down time.. no begging. *The cabinets were special order, semi custom and specific to their layout. The customer had the option to purchase the cabinets himself, or he could go through me to obtain the 12% contractor discount. He chose the discounted option. These and most products are 100% pre paid before it will ship, this was disclosed, if not obvious. Another falsity, he gave me $10k in advance. He gave me the $7k to cover the cabinets, I covered the shipping, tax and held back billing on installation and a 32" door that was tossed in at no charge to him. The actual total $9921.00 *The additional money mentioned, $4k out from $6k, was again contractually agreed to. In addition to my contractor removing & opening walls, it also includes a $2k door system and many more materials. (contracts will be on web site) * He suggested he/they were treated like slaves.. I do not even get this one.. if he felt that way he could have mentioned it at least in 1 of the many emails we exchanged. or just fired us. I treat people as they treat me. * My work schedule is again backed, by our e mail communications, the only unproductive time was when we were waiting for decisions, supplies...or the times when he forgot to leave the door unlocked for us. * As for the cabinets, put aside the fact that they chose them, when delivered they loved them.. These cabinets are 100% wood construction, dove tailed solid wood draws and all having soft close hinges and draw glides. The cabinets were in their sunroom for over a week while the area was being prepared, certainly enough time to inspect them, and discuss any issues I would think. * Supplied were 4 base cabinets, in black to support the granite island. What product is used in the paint process is unknown to me. Peeling, cracks, dents why was this never brought up until now ? * As for the additional items, that he suggests I was demanding huge amounts of money for, I had told him multiple times that he could use others ( please see e mails in web site) "And again, if you would like others to do the above work, it is no problem at all." E mail of 11/14/12, closing line. I received 3 plumbing quotes, 2 from known plumbers, one that happened to be next door, and one that he got himself.. I cannot help or dictate what they charge, same goes for electrical. * As you will see in web site, I encouraged him not to do the work himself, as he suggested for both plumbing, gas work and electrical. I personally do not pull permits for plumbing, gas or electrical. * I robbed him of thousands.. contractually he still owes me thousands and when given the opportunity to resolve any issues, he then stopped a payment for work that was previously completed, but that I had held onto the check for weeks before cashing. * I legally had the right to stop work, for his non payment, stop payments and breech of contract. Though I attempted to resolve this so I and the other contractors could get paid for their work but all I get is an Angie's list bashing. * The flooring was purchased by the homeowner at lumber liquidators, we were told that their subs were going to install the flooring. While we offered a quote for the additional work, the proposal was never signed or agreed to by the home owner. * The home owner designed his own island 10' x 4' for a space 17' x 9' ( cabinet area deleted) The concept was ill thought as pictures will show on the web site, the homeowner had purchased the support legs, instructed the granite installer where he wanted them. The installers told him that they would not offer proper support at these locations, and that if he wanted them as indicated he would need to make a support cradle for the granite to avoid possible cracks. The homeowner said just to use temporary supports if they could, and he would take care of it. I offered to make a cradle to support the underside of the slab, but with out this consent I could not would not go against the advice of experienced artisans, and then be responsible for a very expensive piece of stone.. * Even if I had a signed & accepted proposal for the floor work, The posts needed to be placed first, then the floor would go around them to secure their lower stance. It was his design, his legs and placement scheme. So again, I was not going to assume responsibility for his actions. * Electrical outlets. We did not install any new locations. * The factory applied weather stripping did appear loose, we did not get the opportunity to adjust, as will be seen in e mail offering to do so. * Trigger happy...sub floor what ? This is the problem.. home owner trying to save by DYI ing and blaming contractors. * Show me the phone & e mail records with your attempts.. I will and posting mine. Excerpt from e mail, 12/01/12: Hi , I am sending you formal notification, that even with my attempts to review and finish your additional & requested tasks to/for your project, you have chosen to stop your payment for services & materials STL has already rendered on your behalf. REF: DCU check # 114 in the amount of $500.00. Further more, your continued attempts to perform electrical and others aspects to the project on your own, are jeopardizing the projects integrity & safety. I will also be taking the necessary property lien actions, to preserve my interests. * Our contracts clearly states that all products carry their own warranty, he can simply call therma tru. * The same electrician that did so wonderful.. and he did, was being berated and counter offered on future new work that was requested.. go figure. * Given your negative opinion, comforts me. For others like you that expect everything for free, I don't need the aggravation. I do not participate in financing / relocation assistance. * Missing out on beautiful pregnancy time.. this is the same guy that wanted to keep an old kitchen base cabinet to use as the babies changing table.. hello family services. * Yes, avoid me like the plague.. #1: if when asked, if you would like counter tops prepped for soap or hot water dispensing units, and plan to tell me that Americans are so excessive.. yes avoid me. * Yes, avoid me like the plague.. #2: If when asked for payments that are due, you plan to tell me that " people from my parts of the world" are looked at closely, with large check amounts, so I must wait. * Yes, avoid me like the plague.. #3: If you plan to embarrass me with my Granite company, harassing them that they must give you cash credit for the unused scrap materials. So remember, please visit http://aswinisaliar.com soon, Fortunately I am busy with great customers, loving our work so it may be a couple of weeks before I get to develop the entire site.

I contacted Sky's The Limit to rebuild and paint my townhouse after some water damage. He was very polite and personable on the phone and in person when he arrived on location to have a look around. We talked and agreed that I would email him a list of all the work I would like done. As of today 11/19/12 almost one month I have not received an estimate or any other communications since he came out. I have already picked a contractor but thought since I found Sky's The Limit here on Angie's List it was only fair to report back my experience for future users. I don't know anything about the quality of his work and he could be a great contractor but either he is too busy to complete an estimate or decided it was a project he was not interested and just ignored it.
Description of Work: I needed about $28,000 worth of work done on my townhouse after some water damage and contacted Sky's The Limit for an estimate.

This was a two level row house converted to a condominium, that had extensive water damage to both levels. This was not a typical remodeling project, though STL did offer to take a look at the project. Others had previously been on site to strip the majority of the flooring, walls and ceilings. As told to STL, this was a to be covered by the insurance, while uncertain of the covered damages, there would be little additional funds available to cover repairs should they exceed the insurance companies adjusted schedule of allowed costs. STL did receive a wish list from the owner, outlining repairs requested, similar to those noted & itemized by STL while on the visit. STL never received a detailed repair schedule that was issued by the insurance company for the repairs and materials that would be allowed/covered. While STL appreciates all opportunities, Insurance work is generally very specific and leaves little room for additional items and upgrades.

Rick Johnson pulled all the proper permits and then got everything signed off on by the inspector. The price was the same as he quoted us. No surprises. All messes were cleaned up when he was done. We love our new windows.
Description of Work: We thought Rick Johnson (Sky's the Limit) did a great job. We had 21 Windows replaced. His prices were reasonable and he put in Harvey Windows. The job wasn't just replacing windows with the same size windows, it was enlarging the windows. Our house originally had small windows everywhere even though we had a beautiful view out the back. On the back of the house where there had been a single window in each room, we had doubles put in. All of our original windows were short, so we also had taller windows put in. On the front of the house we had triple windows put in where there had been only singles. The work included taking apart the wall, redoing the framing and then putting the window in.
