A large kitchen cabinet became detached from the wall and was tilting onto my refrigerator. I called Jeff Lasky and explained this problem and other smaller things that needed fixing. He came out, gave me an estimate and we subsequently picked a date. His estimate was $300, which is his minimum charge. This included a carpenter who works with Jeff. The work started on time and Jeff and the carpenter reinstalled the cabinet, installed a keyed lock on my cellar storeroom door, fixed a closet door that wouldn't close and bathroom towel fixtures that had fallen off. Jeff also noticed that my front door didn't close properly and fixed the hinge. I am very satisfied with the work and will hire Jeff Lasky again.

I called Jeff Lasky and he came over to fix it. It turned out the fix needed to be more involved than he anticipated, so he told me he'd need to come back with the proper equipment. In the meantime he was able to tighten the hinge temporarily. That worked fine, and he called and came back the next week on time and did the permanent fix, which was quicker and quieter than I expected. I will call Jeff again for our future fix-it needs.
Description of Work: Fix door hinge that was coming loose from the jamb, which made door difficult to open and close. Obviously, the problem required more than just tightening the screws. Jeff redid the attachment.

We had a great experience throughout the qouting process and the price was reasonable. In the end, the timing ended up such that I did the work myself, but had I gone with a handyman it would have been Lasky

I was called by this member because their oven had died, and it was an odd size. They did now know if the opening would accommodate a new oven without some carpentry. After some careful measuring, I recommended what size oven they might order. They selected one of the only two appropriately sized ovens they found at Sears online. When it showed up, it fit without any modifications to the opening. The size was perfect, so the member put it in himself. No charge for measuring.

Jeff arrived as scheduled; was personable, knowledgable and professional; took his time putting together the quotation - and was very candid saying the job (installation of built-in wardrobe) was large and might require extra time; and finished the job expertly. It did take longer than expected but the additional charge was exceptionally reasonable. Will call Jeff again if needed: highly recommended!

Jeff first came over to estimate the repair work needed and first we discussed the possibility of replacing the skirt and also the left hand vertical section, but after examining the damage determined that all we needed was a new skirt. Jeff also decided to use PVC rather than actual wood for the new skirt. Removing the original skirt turned out to be tougher than anticipated, but Jeff and his helper were able to cut it off in sections. Overall Jeff and his helper did a very good job of fixing the window to our needs and was able to save us lots of money by recommending the minimum amount of work and for charging us for only the labor and not for the PVC. I would strongly recommend Jeff to others who need similar carpentry work done.
Description of Work: We needed part of our bathroom window sill repaired as some of the wood was rotten over time from shower water. It was important to replace this part of the window as we also needed tile work done to fix similar damage in the stall.

Jeff did a really good job. He was one of the few handymen to respond to my call. He stopped by within 48 hours of the call to give an estimate. On the day of the job, he and his assistant arrived promptly and finished the work within the timeframe he had given me. He was also very conscientious about cleaning up around the work site. I am very pleased with the work that he has done.
Description of Work: Replaced hollow door that separated kitchen from back hallway with a solid door. Trimmed the solid door by 3/16" so that it would fit the in the door frame. Also cut a hole in the door for a deadbolt lock.

The stairs up to our porch had gotten rotten and needed to be repaired/replaced. Jeff was fantastic. First of all, the quality of his work is excellent. In addition to that, he was efficient - the work was done very quickly! Jeff was responsive to phone calls and emails, which made it easy to keep in touch. He did his best to keep the costs down, and even found us a reasonably priced painter for the finishing work, which made our life a lot easier! Basically, Jeff is an excellent carpenter, professional and pleasant to deal with, and respectful of our budget. I will hire him again any time I need carpentry work done.

The former tenants in our house had neglected to tell us that the windows were almost all falling apart. Most of the sashes were broken, several of the wood frames were rotted, it was a mess. Jeff repaired them all for far less than I expected, and very quickly. He was so good, we hired him to do further carpentry work on the house, and will hire him any time we need work done.

Jeff scheduled the estimate, arrived when he said he would, and proposed a couple different ways of completing the job. He then emailed me an estimate within a few days. Jeff actually built the railing in his shop, then dropped it off at our house. We primed and painted it ourselves, then let him know when it was ready to install. Two days after it was painted, Jeff came with one other worker to install. He called the night before to set up a time and arrived when he said he would. We are very happy with the solution (1/4 the price of a full railing around the whole porch) and would use or recommend Jeff Lasky again.
Description of Work: Jeff built and installed a railing across a french door that opens onto the (railing-less) roof of our front porch. Instead of just providing an estimate for what I asked (a railing around the whole roof), he inquired about why we wanted it (mortgage requirement) and proposed the much more cost-effective solution of just railing off the door, rather that putting the rail around the whole porch. None of the other estimates we requested proposed any such alternatives and would have required puncturing our fairly new rubber roof. Jeff's solution left the roof intact.

Not surprisingly, Jeff seems to be much in demand, so he may be a bit slow to respond to new clients, especially those with "emergency" problems that are probably better suited to a handyman or general contractor. However, when he did show up to check out the job, he invested serious time in taking measurements and figuring out the best way to solve potential problems. He then came back as soon as he had an opening (a few weeks later) and did everything promptly and completely. We have a backlog of projects throughout our house that have been waiting for a finish carpenter, and I'm now looking forward to having Jeff do a lot more work for us.
Description of Work: Jeff installed a new casing and a mahogany screen door on for our front door. The house is 90+ years old, so the job was tricky, with warping, settling, and general fitting problems in all three dimensions. We knew we needed a real finish carpenter (not a handyman) and Jeff absolutely lived up to expectations. He's an old-fashioned perfectionist who knows his craft and clearly loves what he's doing.

We hired Jeff Lasky and his crew based on a recommendation from a friend. Jeff was contracted to restore the original windows in our home. This process could not have been more difficult. Jeff came and removed our windows and told us it would take 2 to 3 weeks maximum to restore the windows. In total our house was without windows for over 3 months!! When our windows were returned and installed that insides were scratched and gauged. Initially, when his crew reinstalled the windows none of them fit properly and would not close. Jeff's response to us was that our windows had never fully closed, which was completely untrue as we had never had any previous issues. It was later determined that when he had them reglazed that some of the glazing had dropped inside the grooves and prevented them from shutting. It has been over a year and our windows still do not open/close properly. The "spanish wood" he used on the sides for the windows to slide has warped and now sticks out when the windows are open. I truly feel that we just wasted $5000. I would be extremely weary of using him for any substantial projects and was very surprised that he has received so many positive reviews. Who knows, maybe we just ended up being his "one bad job". Hopefully anyone else who uses him the future will have a different experience.

Response from Lasky Homesmith Services
I did this job two years before this report was written. Here is what really happened. We took the sashes out and brought them to a vendor to have the glazing material replaced. I had them back at the member's home within two weeks. Her husband decided to first scrape. prime and paint all the sashes in his garage before we reinstalled them. That took him over two months - hence no windows for three months. Clearly, that was not something for which I can be held responsible. (They had storm windows, and it was summer. So she makes it sound a lot worse than it was.) When her husband finally called, we promptly showed up. Two of my men installed the sashes, and didn't realize that excess glazing compound prevented the windows from fully closing. This is true. I came back the next morning, cleaned out the compound, and reinstalled all the windows. Since she was unable to have a civil conversation with me, I showed her husband every window and he agreed that they closed properly. He promptly paid me the balance due in full. So the problem was resolved in less than 24 hours. I guarantee my work. Had she called me about her other issues, I would have, as is my practice, gone back and made it right. In addition, this member had written a bad check to me in excess of $1000, and refused to reimburse me for over $300 in overdraft fees I incurred as a result. I let the matter drop.

Jeff was easy to reach by email. He came to assess and advised me of the need for a small cement foundation, which I agreed with. He listened to me about my not needing fancy wood, just a solid stair, and he made an estimate of labot plus materials. He and one assistant came to start the job within a few days. It took three days. Jeff was very tidy in doing the work and took away all debris. The new stairs he constructed is excellent - it's solid, and perfectly aligned and level. I'm very happy with the finished work.

I have an older counter depth refrigerator with cabinets directly above it. The new refrigerators do not fit in the available space so the over-fridge cabinets needed to be substantially trimmed without looking noticeably different than the other kitchen cabinets. I called Jeff and he came by that same day to look at the cabinets. He came by 5 days later to do the work. Jeff has an impressive truckful of portable woodworking equipment, and he and his helper overcame several unanticipated and challenging problems. The trimmed cabinets look great! You can hardly notice they were trimmed. I am very happy with the result. Would definitely hire Jeff again.

I called and emailed and requested work to repair a wood stairway next to my house. He said that he'd stop by to look at the job. He didn't get back to me so I called and he apologized for letting it slip through the cracks. After inspecting the stairs. he thought that they were in pretty good shape except that one stair was on a bit of an angle. I asked if he could fix that and he said no, I presume because it was too small a job. I had said how one stair had completely collapsed because the bracket rusted out and that's why I wanted others replaced but he didn't think it was a problem. After looking at the steps again, I disagree. Some of the brackets are indeed rusted and, while you can jump on the step and it won't break, at least several need to be repaired. I'd prefer to do all of them at once and start with a unifor looking stairway (I didn't say that to him though). Why he didn't want to do what I asked, for instance, ask me exactly which ones I want replaced, I don't know. I would do it myself but I have a back injury and just can't do that kind of work now, not to mention that I'm really busy, which is why I wanted to find a good handyman for jobs like this. I would have thought he'd want to help me out with this little job but I guess it wasn't big enough. That doesn't make me feel good about the service so I'll try to find someone else.

Jeff responded quickly to my call and came over that afternoon with Tom to check out the job. They discussed options with me after they struggled successfully to remove the deck panel that needed work. The following day they began to redesign and rebuild the access deck and replaced several pieces of the damamged decking. Jeff also worked on a front storm door that was not closing correctly and was scraping. I did not ask Jeff his hourly rate or the approximate time it would take to complete the job which I should have done. We also did not have any kind of written or verbal contract. I am very pleased with the results but I would ask for pricing in advance when I contact Jeff for future jobs.
Description of Work: Architect- designed decking around hot tub was poorly designed and removal of sections to access hottub inner workings was nearly impossible. Jeff with support from his carpenter Tom redesigned and rebuilt the deck access which now allows one person to access the hottub controls with ease rather than requiring two people with a car jack and crow bars! Jeff and Tom were here when they said they'd be and would call if they'd be late. They left the worksite clean and safe at the end of each work day.

For the most part, the finished product was fine. The client wasn't able to put the mezuzah up but I was able to put it up myself later. The client was up front on their hourly price, and was able to do work the day after contacting them. They came over in the morning to assess the work and see what hardware they had to buy. Then they came back a few hours later to do the work. Once the work was complete, I paid via check and they left. However, there were a few aspects of the job I wasn't happy with: 1. The customer wanted to mostly use picture hangers that you stick to the wall. I wasn't sure but decided to let the guys do their thing. Well, once the apartment got a little humid this past Spring, one of them fell. We will see if the rest stay up. 2. While I knew the hourly rate, I felt that the customer took a very long time. I had 5 small pieces in the kitchen that needed to be arranged specially, but I didn't think it would take as long as the client used. Towards the end of the work another apartment's fire alarm went off, and that was the only thing that made Lasky and his assistant work quickly, because they wanted to get out before they may have been blocked in by a fire truck.
