"Thank you for the opportunity to be of service and your gracious comments. It sounds like we're a match made in heaven!"
"Glad you dropped by [member name removed]! Even though we're not in your back yard please keep us in mind for electrical troubleshooting and the more complicated diagnostics--two of our specialties that could make the few extra miles well worth the trip. Thanks!"
"Any time is a good time to pay a compliment. Thank you! We appreciate you and we appreciate your business."
"Thanks for coming in to try us out! We hope you'll be back for other maintenance in the future. We like to establish a relationship with our customers, and we keep extensive records on all vehicles to enable us to make an accurate diagnosis if the need arises. We can track your maintenance service for you as well. Just leave it all to us!"
"Thank you for giving us the top rating. You're "A" on our list too!"
"Aw shucks, That's just about the nicest thing anyone has ever said about us! It's such a privilege to do business with people who care about the little extras we do to make a difference--thanks for noticing. We love our work and we appreciate you and your business!"
"Thank you [remove member name]. While doing repair and maintenance work we always check for any safety issues that the customer might want to address while they're here."
"We appreciate you giving us a try and are glad to know our "after the service" communication was more than you cared for. We are happy to disable any additional correspondence. Thank you!"
"Our emails consist of maintenance reminders based on the manufacturer's recommendation to keep your car running in top condition. Additionally, we send repair reminders to customers who postpone non-safety related work for a more convenient time."
"Yes! We are the clean, no-pressure shop. Thanks for noticing! Our shop floor (among other things) gets a thorough scrubbing once a week, and we consider it our duty to advise customers of anything we discover while doing the authorized work so they can plan ahead."
"Thank you for crossing the border to give us a try!"
I did ask for an estimate on another repair for my car and they gave me a professional estimate in writing sent to my email. I didn't ultimately use them for that repair, but they were in the ball park, and very professional.
"Thank you for your business and please try us again. We're not the lowest price in town, but our work is top notch."
"We appreciate the comments. Our lobby is clean, loaded with good reading material, and we offer free bottled water, coffee and WI-FI. The customer restroom is nice too! Thank you for your repeat business."
I spoke with several other mechanics, one of whom strongly recommended doing the same, another recommended replacing the 3 that were more difficult (1.5 hours) to get to (a reasonable recommendation), and the others said it wouldn't hurt to replace them but not necessary. ALL other mechanics said that while the recommendation was warranted, the REQUIREMENT to replace 1 bad coil, and 5 good coils that might (probably?) would go bad at some point, just didn't make any sense.
Based upon my research and my own personal situation, I made the decision that I was willing to take the risk and only replace one. New Concepts refused to do the work and stuck me with an outrageous diagnostic bill of $103...all in the name of not wanting their customers to have future issues and be upset.
Come to find out, they had spent the 1.5 hours to get back to the coils, and swapped two out to make sure the one coil that was diagnosed as an issue was an issue. They had already accessed the back coils! AND while other shops charged between $90-$140 for each coil, New Concepts was charging $50, a cheaper coil. Several mechanics said they would not put the cheap ones (at that price) on because of problems with them. Granted, perhaps New Concepts just has the inside connections for cheap, high-quality parts.
So riddle me this, where is the sense in gaining access to the coils, refusing to replace only one even after a fair warning to me that there may be problems with the other coils later on, all to put on cheap coils that other mechanics refuse to put on themselves??
It's like a doctor refusing to perform knee replacement surgery on just one bad knee because "well, if one knee goes out that puts more strain on the other, which means your other knee will probably give out soon. I'll save you the extra surgery fee if we just do both now." Thanks Doc, but I only have the money for the one now. I think another year or two with my old knee, and savings now, is worth the extra surgery fee. "Sorry then, I won't perform the surgery on your bad knee."...and sewing the knee up and charging the poor patient a surgery fee. WHAT?!?
Another mechanic in town that I have used for years and trust, but is a bit of a drive from my house, is going to run the diagnostic, credit the diagnostic back to me when he performs the work, and replace just one coil. Simple. Done. My risk. My reward. My decision. And if I go back to him with other coils that go bad, and I have to pay him the 1.5 hours again to fix it, I'll still be a happy customer.
Bottom Line: If you want someone to make decisions for you on what you should do and how you should spend your money, go to New Concepts (don't be surprised if you spend more money than you need to). If you want the freedom to consider recommendations, and make the best decision you can based upon your unique situation, go to another mechanic.
"We appreciate your business and are happy to know you had a such a good experience."
"Although a scheduled appointment works better for most everyone, we are more than willing to accommodate someone who's in pinch if we can. Often we are able perform walk-in oil changes as well."
"Thanks! We have a very friendly crew. There's no charge for that! :)"
"We love cars, we love people and we love our work. Thanks for coming in!"
"And we would love to have you back. Our master tech is gifted at diagnosing "noises." Thank you for the glowing report!"
