They changed the front pads and rotors for me on 09/20/2014. Now I just had to change them again because they are worn out. It was shaking badly when using brakes. Yesterday I only spent $210 for the pads and rotors. Back then they charged me for more than $350 for the poor quality parts.

The service was performed in a timely manner, unfortunately the A/C still does not work. I am now out $739.78 and still have a vehicle with no A/C.

"Hello, thank you for the review. Unfortunately, with air conditioning leaks, you have to fix the obvious problems first. As it turns out you had multiple issues which needed attention, and were addressed in a later visit. We always strive to provide the best quality at a an exceptional value. Please call us if you ever have any issues so we can take care of you ."

I have taken my truck to the same "hometown" mechanic since it was purchased new in 2007. I have since moved to Johnson County and needed to find a closer mechanic that I could trust. I found Smith Automotive on Angie's list and Yelp and they had very favorable reviews so I gave them a try. I was very happy with their communication and service. They did the repair as needed and everything turned out great. They made us feel comfortable through their communication throughout the process. I will use them in the future as I feel they're an honest shop.

Last time I was in for an oil change the guys  brought to my attention that the top of my radiator had some very small cracks in it. They showed me where there was moisture gathering in the corners. They went on to explain that the newer radiators, while mostly metal, have a pressed on plastic top. It was the plastic top that had tiny cracks that the moisture was leaking from. I always like to budget my repairs so they let me know they couldn't say for sure when it might have a major failure. But told me that I probably wanted to get it fixed ASAP. When I took it in they completed the repairs on time and on budget.

I started taking my car to they guys a year of two ago. After I got married I started taking my wife's truck to them. Now that my step son moved in he has started taking his car there as well. My Dad always told me good, honest mechanics where hard to find. So, when you find one stick with them. That is why I like Smith Specialty. I feel like they are a partner. They let me know what is going on with my car, and give me options.

I highly recommend them.

Richard

Purchased the Big Deal for a synthetic oil change for our 2002 Saab.  The price was great and the fact the shop had Saturday hours worked well for our busy schedules.  When I called to make the appointment, they were very friendly and accommodating.  They said just call them for any Saturday we wanted to have the oil change done and they would get us in.  I called on a Saturday morning after the holidays and they made an appointment for us that morning.  We took the car in, left it with them to go run some errands and in less than 2 hours they called to let us know it was done and ready for pickup. My husband was the one that interfaced with them and he was impressed with their friendly and professional attitude.  They also seemed to know Saab's and how to service them, something we've had a little concern with since we purchased the car last year.  We plan to use this provider again when we need anything done with the Saab.

The work seemed OK. But it's pricy. My oxygen sensor need be replaced. First time I talked to Mark (I remember that's his name) he said the labor to replace the sensor would be $100. So after I got the sensor I scheduled with Mark to replace the sensor. On next day I went to the shop. I have watched other people changing the sensor on internet before. It should not take more than 30 minutes. But after almost 2 hours they told me that I need replace front brake pads and rotors. The gentleman showed me the brake pad and rotor. He said if I don't replace them the pad will be worn out in a few days. I believed what he said and had them do it. After everything was done he called me to pick up. I found they charged me $110 for replacing the sensor, which was $10 more than what Mark said before. And the funny thing is that the labor they charged for replacing brake pads and rotors is cheaper, about $90. Obviously they bumped up labor when they couldn't make money from parts. And later I found Toyota dealer can do the brake for $199 plus the cost of rotors. I won't go back again for anything else except for warranties.

"I don’t understand why you think our work was pricey. Or slow for that matter. We did the work for less than we said and performed the work in a reasonable length of time. You called and talked to Mark twice over two weeks before you brought your vehicle in. We replaced your rear oxygen sensor based on your request, using your provided part, which is not our normal procedure, but you were insistent that you didn’t want the extra cost and did not want us to test the sensor, just replace it. By your own admission you had spent the better part of an afternoon just trying to find the sensor and I don’t know about your internet videos saying it should only take 30 minutes but it is a mistake to talk about how long things take because not every vehicle is the same. Mark told you it would be $100/hour and it would take a little over an hour. Our book time is 1.1 hours and although our normal labor rate is $92.50 we charge $100/hour when we allow customers to bring their own parts. That would make it $110.00 with a final price of $99.00 after your AngiesList discount, which you were technically not eligible for since this is a special pricing situation. Less than you were quoted on the phone without even seeing your vehicle first. We called Toyota to check your facts: Toyota quoted the job at 1.5 hours x $115/hour (plus 10% shop supplies charge) for a total of $189.50. Our pricing is a savings of $90.50 with your discount but Toyota probably would not have performed the job with your provided part. Toyota’s normal pricing for brakes is $259.99 but gave you special pricing on the phone of $199.00. That would be plus $79.88 each for rotors for a total of $370.26 plus tax including shop supplies. Our pricing is $307.20 for a savings of $63.06. In light of the facts, I do not understand your objection to our pricing and punctuality. We saved you at least $153 plus tax, inspected your vehicle for free and serviced your vehicle in a few hours, which is more service, and faster for less money. A bargain any way you look at it. We hope you rethink your position and give us another chance in the future. Dave"

We were having an awful sound and vibration coming from the front wheels on our GMC and thought it might be a bad wheel hub bearing. We took it into Smith and after some diagnosis they were able to determine which wheel was bad. Replaced wheel hub bearing assembly and no problems at all after the repair. Three weeks later everything is still good. I'm very pleased with the friendliness of Smith's and their ability to correctly diagnosis and repair our problem for a reasonable fee. Plus the parts installed have a 2 year warranty.

We went to Smith's because of their great Angie's list reviews. We will stay with Smith's because they are honest, affordable, and truly care that you leave happy. It's hard to find that attitude in Johnson County, KS. We'd had the brakes worked on last year, and then worked on again, by the same guy who didn't fix them. Toyota vehicles need the factory brake pads, anything less will squeal and/or wear too quickly. We knew this with our 4-runner. We didn't know this with the Tacoma, which was new to us. Dave fixed what the other guy failed to fix twice. And changed the oil. And did an overall check of the vehicle for free, since he knew we were worried about what other work had been done poorly. Can't say enough about how decent it feels to actually trust what a mechanic tells you. He's the first one we've found since moving here. Highly, highly recommend.

Took my truck in with a vibration problem, and found out the issue was the U joints. They put a second person on it and were able to get it back to me that afternoon.
They even noticed one of my headlights that was out of alignment and adjusted it for free.

I have used these guys in the past and they are always very helpful. I am even starting to use them for my oil changes.
Highly recommended.

"Thanks [member name removed] for letting us serve you. You and your wife have become good customers in the short time you have been coming here and I hope you feel comfortable sending your family and friends to us for all their vehicle service. I am curious about the B rating on price; we did the u-joints at a great price plus gave you a 10% discount and gave you a discount on your $25 oil change plus did a free vehicle inspection and adjusted your headlights for free. That would seem like A++ pricing to me, wouldn't you agree? At any rate, we value you as a customer and will do anything we can to make your visits terrific. Dave"

I stopped by because my check engine light was one and they diagnosed the issue and gave me a couple of options for repair (when the gas cap says click 3 times, only click 3 times or you too can buy a new cap for 35 dollars because they do wear out eventually). They've done a lot of work on my older Honda's and it's always been much (much, much) less expensive than the dealer and they try to get me in right away. Nice people and hard workers from what I can tell. Dave is a wonderful man.

Previously, these guys worked on a coolant leak I had. They are very reasonably priced, and gave me a couple different options to fix the problem. They wanted the job done right, but treated it like they were spending their own money on it. I will go back in the future....
