I've used TechStop in the past and I think they have always done a nice job helping me with various problems associated with hardware failures. With this new computer, I decided to have them set up the computer ($99) and move all of my data and software from the old computer to the new machine ($99). They also advised me on the least intrusive anti-virus software and installed that as well. I got the computer back and everything worked fine...great job. Two days after I picked up the computer from The TechStop, I got a promotional email flyer from the shop offering to perform data transfer for "free during the month of December." I was upset that they had not told me about this offer when I was having the work done on my computer and sent an email to the store complaining about the $99 I spent for the same service. If I had waited two days to bring in my new computer, it would have been free. Within 24 hours, I got a call from the store apologizing for the additional cost. I was told that the decision to move forward with the "free data" promotion was a "last minute" decision...the employees I talked with were not aware of the "free data transfer" offer being considered. The TechStop offered to send me a $100 VISA gift card to offset the cost I had paid for the data transfer service. The card arrived three days later...and I am a happy camper. The TechStop didn't have to address my concern, but they did, and they did it promptly and without any hassle. I was impressed with their responsiveness, and will be happy to recommend their services to my friends.
Description of Work: Set up new computer. Moved data from old computer to the new computer. Installed anti-virus software.

The log-on screen on my Mac laptop suddenly looked different and would not let me log-on. I was actually on my way to the Apple store and saw Techstop on the way. I decided to stop in to see what it would cost and if they could repair the laptop. I was greeted by the most courteous and professional person! That in itself was a big plus in letting them do the work for me - first impressions and service count with me giving them anyone my business! I was provided the price for a diagnostic check and told it would be included in the overall price if they did the work (no extra/hidden fees). The costs quoted were much more reasonable than if I took the laptop to the Apple store for repairs. I was told that I would be called once they ran the diagnostic check on the computer. About an hour later, they called to tell me that the computer had a malware that would be relatively simple to remove and they could clean up any other issues that caused my computer to operate inefficiently. About 4 hours later, I received another call to let me know my computer was ready to pick up! I am extremely happy with their services and will definitely keep them as my go-to tech when I need additional computer services. I totally trust them - their service is outstanding, their team is professional, and their straight-forward prices can't be beat!
Description of Work: Ran a diagnostics check, removed malware and other programs that were causing issues with the performance of my computer.

We walked straight in the door and were helped immediately by the owner and his assistant. We were given several options for dealing with a broken power jack. Turn-around was great! They provided the service the same day. We had all our data retrieved by that evening and were able to upload it to another computer without any problems. They were unable to retrieve the data off the memory stick and didn't charge us for this, which we really liked! They will be our go to computer repair place. We highly recommend their services!
Description of Work: Examined the computer for repair. The computer's hard drive was transferred to a memory stick. A broken memory stick was examined for data retrieval.

When I brought the computer in to the shop they asked all the right questions and printed out a work order of which I got a copy. I was promised the work would be completed in two days. They actually called the next day and said the computer was ready. When I picked it back up, they gave me back the data cable for the SSD which I had provided. They said the cable gave them some errors so they installed one of ther own at no extra charge. The computer has been working great. I am really pleased with its performance. The TechStop is a very professional and well organized computer repair shop and I would trust them with any work on my computer. I would also highly recommend that any serious computer user get a SSD.
Description of Work: They installed a solid state hard drive (SSD) and a new operating system on my computer.

I took the guys at Tech Stop a hard drive which had been damaged after our laptop fell off a countertop. We were pretty desperate as the hard drive contained pictures, work, and a number of documents we couldn't afford to lose. It took a few days, but the team there was able to extract all the data using the tools they had available. We are so thankful that they were able to recover all the data! The price was also very reasonable.

I appreciated the free advice the first time I went in. The second time, I was appreciative of how they kept me updated on whether my old laptop was gonna make it or not. I walked away with a new laptop and no old data gone so I was happy.
Description of Work: I had a laptop that was giving me fits. It wouldn't turn on properly. I took it in and the service person fiddled with it for a few minutes and then told me to get a new power cord. No charge. So I did and for a few more weeks it worked fine. Then, one fateful day, when I tried to turn it on, it made this awful noise. I took it back, They called me to tell me there was an electrical issue which could not be repaired. I went out and bought a new laptop. They transferred my data from the old hard drive to the new system. When I got it home, everything from my old computer was on my new one and I was up and running again.

After consideration of the costs for repair of the 7 year old computer, software and technology, we decided to purchase a new computer. We brought the new computer to TechStop and they successfully downloaded all transferable data from the old computer to the new one. The services and personnel at this company were professional. Staff very friendly, knowledgeable, and courteous. All work done in a timely manner.
Description of Work: Our desktop computer could not be booted up after a period of slow performance. TechStop evaluated the situation and provided options for repair as well as recommendations.

I was personally introduced to Steve, the owner of TechStop, by a friend. At his shop, Steve was courteous and friendly as I explained the problems that had been occurring on a family member's computer. I explained very clearly that I needed a diagnosis of the problems as soon as possible, as I was heading back up to Chicago exactly one week later and would be taking either the fixed computer or a replacement. Steve assured me that there would be no problem diagnosing the problem by the next day and that I'd have plenty of time to either have the malfunction fixed or go and shop for a replacement. I heard nothing from Steve or his shop the next day. Or the next. Or over the weekend. Or the following Monday, as they were closed for the Christmas holiday. I returned to the TechStop shop on Tuesday morning, six days after dropping off the computer and the day before I needed to leave for Chicago. Steve wasn't in the shop at the time, but one of his techs informed me that they'd just started working on the computer and that they'd have it done the next day. I told him that no, in fact, he'd be handing over the computer immediately. As the tech was looking over some paperwork on the work order, I asked him what, exactly, they'd done to the computer over the past six days. and quot;Nothing, really, and quot; was his reply. Upon booting up the computer when I arrived home, I verified that he was correct and that nothing whatsoever had been done. I had been assured by Steve, the owner of TechStop, that he'd take good care of me and the equipment I entrusted to him. He knew I had a schedule that I needed to keep and he stated emphatically that I didn't need to worry and that they'd have a diagnosis for me the next day. Even if they'd run into a glitch and it had run into the following day (or two) I would have been willing to let them continue working if they'd just spent sixty seconds and called me with an update. Instead they took the computer and ignored it for almost a week.
Description of Work: Left a malfunctioning computer with them for diagnosis.

I initially contacted this company based on their ratings and while they seemed to really know about computers their customer service needs a lot of improvement. Had I not had the experience I did with them, I'd have rated them an A. I dropped my computer off on a Wed afternoon. They said 24 hours for a diagonstics and they'd call me back, but that it probably wouldn't take that long. I ended up calling them Thursday afternoon about it. I gave them the okay to fix it and they said 1-1/2 days. I called Friday afternoon and they said it wouldn't be ready until Sat. I told them that I had to work Sat until 2:30 and wouldn't be there until close to 3 p.m. and that I really needed my computer. On Saturday, I called at 1 p.m. and was told they were just finishing it up and it should be ready for me to pick up by 3. I had to receive permission to leave work on Sat to get my computer. Again, I told them that I wouldn't be there until close to 3 and again he said "okay."I left to get drive over there just before 2:30 and tried calling them at 2:57 on that Saturday to tell them I was a stone's throw away and I received their answering machine. I arrived at the office at 2:58 (this is per a local radio station AND my cell phone) and they were closed. I called them at 3 p.m. and left a message stating I was not happy they had closed before I arrived there. Steve, the owner, called me back Monday morning and told me he'd checked his security video and I never arrived there until 3:02...end of discussion. I told him it was my word against his and he said no, it wasn't. I asked him if he thought I was lying and he said no, but that it wasn't his word against mine. So basically he was telling me he was right, I was wrong. This coming from a company that had not communicated with me whatsoever from Wed-Sat that they had the computer. I reiterated they knew I needed the computer, they knew I was coming and why couldn't they have called me to tell me they wanted to leave early? The reply was "lots of people don't show up when they say they will." I'm not "lots" of people and don't appreciate being thrown into a lumped category. When you work with the public you treat each situation differently...that is if you want to keep business. By no means am I saying the staff was rude or impolite, but the owner came across as his word was the right one...end of story...end of discussion. Thus, I had to wait an additional 2 days to get the computer back and make yet another trip to pick it up. I've spoken to numerous businesses since and all have said their security cameras are set ahead of the actual time. Had Steve just said, "I'm sorry about that...I'll use it as an example in a staff meeting next week so that it doesn't happen again" or "I'll have my staff call people in the future if they're not there within 5 minutes of closing" I'd been okay with that. I know a lot of people who ask me who I use for various services and I will not be referring this place.
Description of Work: Windows operating system had to be reinstalled, data saved and more memory added. I do not have an issue with the work done. The staff seems to have done a great job. I have an issue with their customer service.

I was happy with the price but I wasn't happy at all with their work though. After they replaced the hard drive there were new problems with the computer, I had to take the computer back at three different times, and they were never successful in resolving the problem. They even told me that I should expect problems with my computer since that was being fixed they said it's normal to have the problem. They were very quiet and nice people but never were able to solve the problem. Responsiveness; they were good about getting back to me but they never solved the technical problem. Professionalism; they were polite, they were nice and they called me back but I do not think technically they knew what they were doing. I would not use their services again in the future.
Description of Work: We used the services of The TechStop to replace a hard drive in my computer. The last time I used their services was in October and November of 2010.

Overall this experience was an excellent one. I would not hesitate to use them again. They are convenient, friendly, the cost was reasonable and my computers are working great now.
Description of Work: I took in 3 towers for service. They each needed to be cleaned up and have new security software installed. After describing the symptoms of each tower to the tech, he explained, in detail, what he could do to resolve all issues. One of the towers had a low percent rate of being fixable so rather than pay the service fee to confirm same, I opted to not fix it. The tech offered and removed the DVD drive in this particular tower so I can use it in another tower in the future if needed. The other 2 towers were cleaned and we had the option to purchase the new security software from the tech or buy our own and take it in. We found it was cheaper to run up to Frys and buy Norton ourselves so that is what we did. The tech was completely amicable with this even though he sells the same software for a slightly higher price. I found the service extremely efficient and helpful. The technician was very friendly and did an excellent job explaining the process and all fees involved.

My laptop quit working properly. I didn't know if it was malware/virus or hardware problem. They did a diagnostic and a day later called to tell me I had a bad hard drive and they thought the computer was worth keeping. I agreed because I had recently upgraded memory, new battery, etc., plus the computer is 3 1/2 years old and I felt like I could get more years out of it. They saved ALL information on the computer, installed new hard drive, reinstalled all information onto new hard drive. It works like a charm and all information including virus protection and obviously the operating system I had on former one was installed as well.

Tech Stop ran a diagnostic and made repairs. When I still had problems they again anaylzed the system and fix ed the problem. I paid for a diagnostic, and the repairs were covered in that fee. They are diligent in tracking down the problems and are extremely fair in pricing. Not a place that trys to find ways to charge for additional services. Definitely a trusted service provider!

They talked to me and ran diagnostics. Called me with an update and gave me both best and worse scenerio of what they might find.. I am not techniocally savvy about the inner workings of computers, so they could have told me I had a big problem, and I would not know any better. In the end, they were able to fix the problem easily. The cost was covered by the diagnostic charge.
