What we didn't find out until a few months ago when we were getting our air ducts and dryer vent cleaned was that we couldn't have the dryer vent cleaned because it was not compliant. We also found out that when the Appliance Outlet installed the dryer vent, they cut holes in 2 of the floor joists and looped the flexible tubing from the dryer to the external vent. We found out that the flexible tubing is not compliant or up to code. We ended up contacting a structural engineer as we had some seals on our windows pop and door not closing.
Description of Work: We hired the Appliance Outlet to install a dryer vent back in 2008.

Despite my low expectations of used applicance dealers, this establishment managed to surprise me. They sold me a dryer whose timer broke the very first time I turned the knob counter clockwise. You're not supposed to turn the knob counter clockwise, but I still felt as though I had been taken. When bringing this to the attention of the store manager, I was met with an argumentative and dismissive attitude. "Since we buy our appliances used, you don't know what you're getting. It might break the first time you turn it the wrong way, or the 100th time." Since you don't know what you're getting when you buy an appliance from Appliance Outlet, I would strongly recommend you avoid the headache altogether.

Purchased a dryer from this business. My previous tenant moved out and took his dryer with him (that had worked fine at this location for five years). Within a short period the dryer starting going out (no heat). The Appliance Outlet was called and from the beginning, started issuing strong warnings that if the problem was a result our negligence or doing, a service fee would be charged. After the second time the dryer went out, the manager on duty stated that it was our fault that the dryer stopped working due to the configuration of our dryer vent. The dryer vent rises approxiamately seven feet upwards and then out. This is approximately one third the length of some of my newer rental homes (builder spec'd). A call to the manager turned into a yelling match with the manager eventually challenging me to come into the store and meet him face to face. So I did. Immediately. Though he did not level threats to my face...the conversation was argumentative and not how I'm used to being treated as a customer. We did discuss the situation further but in the end, I resolved like others on this thread, to never, ever, use this company again. Shortly afterwards, in spite of taking his technicians advice and enlarging the exhaust vent, the dryer went out for good and needed to be replaced.
Description of Work: I purchased a used dryer for one of my rental properties. The unit blew an internal fuse twice and I asked for service. They put the blame on the configuration of the dryer vent (distance up and length of exhaust).

Response from The Appliance Outlet
I, as the owner, would like to apologize that you feel you were threatened. We have our policies and procedures in place for a reason. We have been have been serving central Indiana for over a decade and have gained a lot of experience where appliances are concerned. 99% of the reason that a dryer blows a fuse is due to a clog in the internal vent system of the structure. We have experienced this over and over again and that is why our policy states that if we determine that the problem is not with the craftsmanship of the appliance but rather with the home/business, there will be a charge. A problem with the structure is not the responsibility of my company but rather that of the customer. If I send a tech out over and over again for the same problem, it is most likely not the appliance. Simply reading the policy and warranty information on the back of your receipt would have made you aware of this. Again, I apologize that you feel you were threatened but being familiar with the conversation as I was, I do recall that you, as the customer, became aggressive initially. We do everything in our power to make sure all customers are satisfied.

Basically fair to good. I wouldn't use them expecting a perfect running appliance that lasts for years. But if you're low on cash or don't want to sink a lot into furnishing multiple rentals at once then it's fine.
Description of Work: I've used them for rental properties since they are closest to the locations, although they do not include delivery which is an extra $20. The Items last anywhere to a few weeks to a year or longer. It's hit and miss. Items average about 6 mo or so. They have a decent repair and warranty in place. Do your homework as to what you're buying and it's general reliability as well since certain items are just duds when they're manufactured new.

We have been in business since 1998 and have hundreds of returning customers. You are buying a used appliance not new and though we put everything we sell through a tedious diagnostic, that doesn't always mean something that was working correctly during that diagnostic doesn't go bad. We have an unmatched warranty for refurbished appliances and again, it would be difficult to be the leader in reconditioned appliances locally if we sold sub par merchandise. Thanks for the feedback.

I have many rental homes and use a few companies for appliances, both used and new. I have bought several stoves, dishwashers, refrigerators etc. from The Appliance Outlet in the past. This time we purchased a side by side refrigerator and found out the ice maker does not work. They will not stand behind this refrigerator. Scott the owner claims that this is not part of their waranty. I was never told that there is a chance that they are selling defective appliances or I never would have purchased it. I have never been in their store, and have always had them deliver the appliances. This was the 12th and last appliance I will purchase from them.

Response from The Appliance Outlet
I talked to the member personally and explained to him that our warranty does not cover the ice maker or water dispenser in any refrigerator we sell as we do not have the facilities on site to test those parts of the piece. The member has purchased several appliances including refrigerators from us over the last year or so and each time a refrigerator is purchased, the sales associate explains our warranty in depth including the fact that those two aspects of the machine are NOT covered under our warranty whether it is on the phone or in person. The member is quite aware of our warranty and has been since he started purchasing from us. The member asserted that this was never explained to him but because we have dealt with this type of situation in the past, I know for a fact it was. That aspect of our warranty is also explained on the back of our receipts in depth. I did not decline to do the repair but I did decline to do it under our warranty meaning there would be a charge. He refused. Scott Sims, President

I won't ever go back and I won't refer anyone there.
Description of Work: My father in law's refrigerator pooped out and I needed to get a used one to replace it. I had a great experience 2 yrs ago with this company's outlet store on S. Madison. The sales person 2 yrs ago couldn't of been nicer. Because of this past experience, I contacted them first. The young man I spoke with told me they didn't have any refrigerators smaller than 22 cu.ft. I went down to the store any way because I wasn't sure I believed him as well as I had another errand to do in that area. When I went in, there were 5 or 6 refrigerators smaller than 22 cu.ft but they didn't have price tags on them. This outlet sells used appliances supposedly that have been refurbished. When I started opening the doors to look, what I found was disgusting--the insides were dirty and smelly. The sales person was a young adult. He was rude and he did not appear to want to help me or sell a refrigerator. When I asked about cost, he rambled off a price and then it got jacked up about $60-70 more with delivery and hauling away the old one. This was not how it was 2 yrs ago. I asked my appliance repair company if they had used refrigerators and they referred me to Appliance Outlet and I told them of the experience. They appreciated the information because the outlet belonged to the son of the owner of my appliance repair company. I thought I might hear something back after making my complaint since the two companies have some type of connection but I haven't heard anything yet. I hope Appliance Outlet checks out this site to see what kind of reports they get.

My dryer quit and I need one for only 6 months because we were moving. I didn't want to spend a lot of money for such a short time and looked at several new dryers and then looked at Angie's List and found a used appliance dealer. I called and they were great on the phone, told me to come to the warehouse and pick one out. So I drove to the warehouse (the area is not the best, but I felt safe) and they had a very large selection of dryers. I picked one and they told me it would be delivered the next day. There was a problem with the delivery. I called the next afternoon to see when it would be delivered and was told that it wouldn't be there until the next morning. It arrived at noon the following day, but the delivery guys were great, very professional. They had it installed and the old one gone in less than 15 minutes. The dryer has a 90 day warranty on parts and labor and a year warranty on labor. So far it has worked great.
Description of Work: I purchased a dryer from Appliance Outlet and they delivered it two days later, installed it, and took the old one away for a great price.

This is a used appliance store, which they sell for cheap. When I went in, they were more expensive than I expected them to be, but they were high end equipment. It was good equipment, and the service was very good.

They were knowledgeable about their inventory. When I got home, the glass tray did not fit, so they obtained another one for me and I went to pick it up.

My fridge died and I wasn't in a position to buy new, so I decided to try these folks. There's nothing elegant about the shopping experience here; they're in a warehouse, and sometimes the appliance you want to look at is behind three others. But everybody I spoke to was friendly and eager to please, and they stood by patiently while I looked through their stock. I wanted an 18 cu. ft. white top freezer model, and they had many of them available that were between 3 and 5 years old. I found one that had some nice features and was cosmetically acceptable (they all seemed to be dented to one extent or another). They said they had repaired it and it had just spent a week running to be sure it would keep proper temperature. I asked the price; it was so low that after I collected my jaw off the floor I asked them to install an ice maker, too, because I could afford it. Delivery was $15, hauling away my old fridge was $20. They make any needed repairs for free for the first 90 days, and pay for labor only for the rest of the first year, but they told me that they have a warehouse full of appliance parts and usually charge much less than new for them. If you buy here, be sure to check the appliance over thoroughly before you commit. I did not notice a long dent down the side of the fridge until it arrived at my house. Also, be aware that they only deliver the fridge; hookup is your job. Also, my fridge needed a thorough cleaning when it arrived. And when I plugged it in, it ran loud. I called for repair, and it was a bit challenging scheduling the repairman to come--he called twice when he was near my home to see if he could come by right then, but I was at work across town. When we did hook up he quickly and efficiently found and repaired the problem. He even had all the necessary parts on his truck. Buying here is not for someone who needs their hand held through selection, delivery, and installation. You have to know what you want, be able to inspect an appliance thoroughly, and be willing to accept something that is not pristine--you are buying used. But they seem to stand behind what they sell, and everybody I dealt with was pleasant. My washer is showing signs it is not long for this world. I'm in no better position now than I was when I bought the fridge, so I'll probably visit these folks again before too long.
Description of Work: Purchased a repaired used refrigerator from them. They delivered it and took my old refrigerator away. I also had them return about a week later to repair a problem that developed with the fridge.

The delivery and installation charge was only $15 and they had them there as soon as it was convenient for us. You could tell one of the guys was there to teach the other one. They had a tight squeeze getting them through our basement door and had to partially dismantle the dryer. One guy explained each step to the other and we all learned something. I love to support businesses like this and I really appreciate what they're doing to reduce, reuse & recycle!
Description of Work: I was looking for a used washer & dryer. I wanted to try a scratch and dent or outlet place. I Google-mapped appliance outlet with my zip code and found The Appliance Outlet. I was impressed with their website, as they billed themselves as "North America's largest appliance recycler". They have contracts with all the big boy manufacturers and retailers. When people get a new appliance and the company offers haul away service for old appliances, these guys get them. They refurbish them and sell them cheaply. When they're not selling or delivering items, they are fixing them up and teaching drivers the trade of appliance repair. According to our salesman, Donald, nothing is more than 3 years old. There is a 30 day warranty on service, labor, and parts and a 1 year warranty on service and labor if you buy the part wholesale. What they don t resell, they part out and recycle as scrap. They're teaching people a trade, offering a great deal and keeping bulk items out of landfills. It's win x3. I was excited to give them my business! The one problem is that they don't always answer the phone, even during business hours, and they do not have an outgoing voicemail that identifies themselves. I was afraid they'd gone out of business. I finally got a hold of them and verified that they were open to the public and not just a commercial dealer. Be ready, it's not fancy, it's a warehouse situation but the guys are friendly and helpful and they'll work with you!

The Appliance Outlet came out and had the challenge of solving the problem. The first time he came out, he realized he had to go in the crawlspace and didn't have the proper apparel since we had so much rain and the crawlspace was damp. He returned the next day, after our work hours, and cut through 2 walls of concrete and got it vented correctly. I found the tech's to be informative, efficient. The only thing that was missed was closing up the crawlspace. The blessing is with their flexible schedule, neither my husband or me had to leave work early to get the work done. The tech also advised us of another issue we may have with a floor beam.
Description of Work: Our dryer was never vented properly to the outside of the house and it was a hazard.
