The handyman showed up on time. When he came in he said that he did not have a ladder even though his work order was supposed to tell him the ceiling height. The order taker said he would bring the ladder with him, the handyman said I would have to pay extra for the rental and the time it took to get the ladder. I told him forget changing the fixture. Then we went into the room. He said it would take at least 1.5 hours to mud and texture the ceiling ( remember it is 3 ft by 4.5 ft.) and that there was no such thing as a mud that dries in 5 min that is paintable the same day. I asked if he had the tool to match the pattern, he said yes. I was upset that the work could not be completed as we were told AND, the handyman said either he used my bucket of mud, or he had to add more time to go get mud at $162 per hour. I let him use my mud. It took 15 minutes to mix and apply the mud, and it turned out he did not have the right stiple tool for the job ab the pattern was not even close. He then said it was the only tool he had. Then he didn't even try to match the spacing of the design and I had to have him smooth it and I showed him how to space the pattern. Start to finish was 32 minutes. He blames the scheduler saying that he was an office employee and had no idea what the work entailed. We were told he was bringing the supplies, the handyman said he always goes to look at the job first and then shops for supplies. What a great way to ad more time to the bill, and work less, or in my opinion, rip off the customer. It might be different if it was plumbing of something like that, but an eighteen feet is always eighteen feet, and the light was in an entryway, not a large room, so he should have known he needed a taller ladder, As for the mud work, if you don't have enough mudd for such a small area, ( the size of which was also given), you're not prepared for the job. So, I paid $162 for nothing more than rolling mud in the small section and inferior texturing. We will have to change the light ourselves and paint the ceiling too. Several calls were made to the office manager, no calls have been returned.

The work went fine. He was fine. The price was pretty high in comparison to others. It was a bit high for the amount of work done.
Response from Mr. Handyman of SE Boone W Hamilton & N Marion Co
"This work was performed July 5th, 6th & 7th of 2011 for the "member" and she is now reporting a less than favorable report one year later. Angie's List member was given an estimate to complete the work for $3,400.00 before the work started and was invoiced $3,266.00 upon completion. We have no record of anything being wrong or not completed to her satisfaction. This report is another example of why we do not want to participate by paying Angie's List to be listed at the top of the listings. Angie's List will leave a erroneous report like this posted for all to see and not mediate like BBB does for the best interest of the public. Also it should be noted that Angie's List won't publish this report to their members because they sensor comments about their services. Per the agreement "Angie's List will attempt to fairly represent both sides of the issue. I also understand that my response will be reviewed and may be altered if I have used the member's name or used language that Angie's List deems inappropriate." This is the estimate furnished to the member prior work commencing. · Replace 12 sheets of T-111 siding on main barn · Replace 4 trim boards on main barn and prime all sides · Replace T-111 siding along roof line on mini-barn · Install 7 trim boards on mini-barn to hide rotted areas · Build gate for deck out of 2x4 material with 6 balusters (Note: A custom pre-built PVC gate was between $600-$800) · Replace furring strip along house on the deck area · Replace 3 pieces of brick mold around large rear windows and center trim board (brick mold will be composite lumber and center board will be primed on all sides) Estimate - $3,415.00"

The install went very well.  James arrived on time and completed all the requested work.  The work was completed in a timely manner and everything was cleaned up by Mr. Handyman. I used the Angie's List coupon ($197/3hr).  The LCD TV is now mounted on the wall and works great without any cables in sight.  Will use them again in the future.

They did a wonderful job. When the technician first came out, we had a small issue (some leakage with the toilet), but the owner came out the next day to fix it.  He did a great job with resolving the problem that arose. He even gave us a gift certificate. Their price was reasonable. We will absolutely use them again.

Overall, the experience turned out very well. He actually solved a problem for me, since I had a fan blowing on it for a few weeks, which didn’t seem to work. While he was working on the cabinet, out of the corner of his eye, he noticed a very slow drip from a plumbing line, so consequently he saved me a lot of money. It was such a very tiny leak, and if he wouldn’t have noticed this, I would’ve had a lot more problems in the long run.

We hired them to lay a black/white 1" hex tile in our half bath. We provided the tile, mortar, and grout. There were problems from the beginning. The first time, the guy totally ignored the pattern in the tile and had to redo the entire thing. Even after this there were several tiles out of place. He came back to fix them before grouting, but still managed to miss several mistakes in the pattern. After he grouted and we were able to walk on the floor, we noticed that the tiles are raised in several places, making the floor very uneven. There are also some tiles that are turned and do not line up with the others. Also the grout on the front half of the room is noticeably darker and thicker than the grout on the back half of the room. He came back again to install a transition strip at the threshold and realized he had to cut away several inches of tile and subfloor (which he also installed) in order for it to fit. This process left our bathroom, including our newly installed fixtures, and the adjoining room's floor covered in a fine, dark gray dust, as well as filling our entire house with the stench of what I assume was burnt tile. The cut he made left a jagged edge on the tile at the doorway and the tube of grout he used to fill in the edge does not match either of the other two grout colors.

James eventually came to our home to see the job himself. He agreed that the work done was unacceptable and agreed to fix all of the issues we pointed out. However, the job is still not finished. We've tried to contact him to schedule the work, but have not received a response. The job that was scheduled to take two days has now been going on for nearly two months.

Original rating given = D

**Updated 8/8/2011**

The tile job was finally finished on Saturday, August 6th. James brought in someone else to tear out the original job and start from scratch. This time the work was completed promptly and without issue. The workers were courteous, clean, and qualified to do the job. The finished floor looks great, and we are happy with the end result.

James was apologetic and embarrassed, and he went out of his way to make sure that the final job was done correctly and that we were satisfied with the outcome. The current rating reflects our opinion of the process since our original post and not the original work done.

From the very first communication with Mr. Handyman, they were prompt, cordial, and professional.  I got a response very shortly after initally contacting them and set up an appointment with James that would fit my work schedule.  I explained what I needed done and James gave me an idea of how long it would take and what all it would entail over the phone.  We set up an appointment for the next week.  The following week, Wray and James promptly met me at my apartment where I walked them through what needed to be done.  They arrived on time, wore shoe coverings as to not dirty the floors (even though it was unnecessary as my apt floors are a wreck anyway), and immediately brainstormed ideas about how to handle the pipe situation.  They are brilliant.  They got to work right away and always asked my opinion on how I wanted things  (the height, the placement, etc).  They were funny, friendly, and very easy to talk with.  I almost was sad to see them leave.  They got everything done even earlier than expected and the whole experience could not have been easier and more painless.  It was an absolute delight working with James and Wray.  I almost wish I had more for them to do!

From the time they arrived on time or called that they are running a little bit late I have been very impressed with their respect for my time.  All the work was done quickly and done right.  James Furer also followed up after the installations to make sure I was happy and that was greatly appreciated.

Everything turned out well. The only issue we had was the price; I felt it was a little high. There was a charge for the first hour, and then an additional charge for every 15 minutes thereafter.

Overall, ended up okay. He initially put the lights on trees in the back, although I had described in detail which trees I wanted decorated. However, my husband happened to come home while he was putting the lights up and he quickly corrected the mistake. We would have preferred more lights on the trees, and provided many, but will just need to be more detailed next time.
