"[Member Name Removed] moved his refrigerator by himself across newly refinished floors, Days after we left his home. The project was in fact completed on time. [Member Name Removed] also had a house full of movers when we left his home. I cannot be responsible for [Member Name Removed] moving his refrigerator and damaging his floors. We did everything we could to help [Member Name Removed], including fixing his floors, which he agreed to pay for. [Member Name Removed] then claimed he never agreed to pay for the repair. This review is littered with untrue facts & it has been almost 6 years since this happened."
Michael's communication with his subcontractors and employees is not good. As the job began, I found that the subcontractors did not know the particulars I had discussed with Michael.
While for the most part, they were all pleasant and made some effort to keep the area clean, I was not impressed with any of Michael's subcontractors. I don't think anyone likes to go through a remodeling job because, I know, there are always unexpected issues that come up. I'm satisfied with my bathroom, and I'm glad the remodeling is over!
That said, IF I need more remodeling I would consider Michael Boaz again, BUT would insist on some kind of penalty clause if the job wasn't finished in the agreed time.
"You guys were awesome customers and have turned into friends whom I really appreciate. Thanks for the opportunity and I look forward to working together in the future"
I was referred to Mike via a mutual friend. We began conversations in October or so, and I believe I gave Mike the and quot;yes, let's do thisand quot; in late November. Waterproofing was performed in mid-December. And team Boaz showed up in early January. At the outset, Mike said he'd like to get the job done in 4 weeks but thought it better to err on the side of caution and estimated 6 weeks, which should have made the work done by late February. My basement proved to be very challenging for several reasons, likely because my house is nearly 90 years old. But Mike and his team found creative solutions around almost all of the more difficult situations (Examples include low hanging HVAC that could not be moved, how to 'drywall' a cinder block wall, etc.). I could tell we were falling a little behind schedule, but I wasn't terribly concerned since my and quot;hard stopand quot; deadline was before my baby arrived in late March/early April (due April 1). Much of the work hinged on one member of Mike's team, and while that individual and his team did fantastic work, they seemed unreliable -- didn't show up on days I expected them, didn't finish as much as I thought they would within the days they were present. This party did all the floor leveling, tile cutting and installation, demolition, and framing. So his lack of professionalism really impacted the job. Things plodded along and when mistakes were identified, Mike and the team fixed them immediately or explained to me in detail why they weren't mistakes at all (this was my first construction experience!). They were VERY thorough and responsive in ensuring my complete happiness with the finished product.
My only hesitation in giving them full A+ marks comes from the fact that people didn't show up on days they were supposed to (again, mostly one party) and would show up at the house when not expected. Communication as to where the project was at any given time wasn't great. I'd suggest that they eventually invest in an online scheduling software that clients can view in order to know which persons would be at which job site on which days and during which hours. I think it'd save everyone some heartburn. It seems Boaz Construction is growing at a break-neck pace, which is great and deserved, given their finished product. But it was impacting their ability to be reliable when I was engaged with them. My project didn't finish completely until mid-April, which was a problem because my baby was born the last week of March. Our first week home from the hospital, we had to sleep at my parents house with a newborn in a pack 'n' play because the stairs had been varnished and the fumes in the house were too intense for us to be present. When we were back at our home, there were people coming and going, trying to wrap up the project, during a fairly stressful period of my family's life. This was never the intention of Mike or any members of his team, but you know what they say about the road to H***...
In summary, our project was challenging for Mike and for us. But I do feel that had it been left to lesser professionals, it could have gone much more poorly. They did their best to keep me happy, the finished product is lovely, and if I ever come into enough money to do so, I'll call Mike again for a kitchen project I'm dreaming of!
** it's worth noting: the party who had proven problematic during my job was let go toward the end of our engagement. Very unfortunate since we all loved his work, but his lack of reliability was going to cost Boaz work, and they knew that.
"This structure was 90% complete in 3 months, there were never any issues with construction or quality, these folks were fortunate to not have to experience any real problems. We took very good care of them, and gave them quality craftsmanship, there is an amazing carriage house sitting in their backyard. The owner, never had 1 complaint, but his girlfriend and our daily interaction was quite difficult to communicate with. I am very passionate about what I do and will bend over backwards for my customers. I stand behind the quality of this structure, the timing of the construction, and the way my team handled the difficulties communicating with the member. I went to bat for them with the city, I replaced an exterior door at my cost, price was firm throughout construction. In closing I wish them luck and reinforce that I respect Angie's List and understand that its a forum for customer interaction. I am very proud of this project"
"Member, Thanks for your feedback, we appreciate your business, and it was a pleasure working with you. -Michael"
"My Rebuttal to member is as follows. I had viral meningitis that summer ( 2 years ago), and I lost my top guy in the middle of the summer. I probably wasn't as good at communicating those things with the customer at that point of time. A common mistake with Contractors / Craftsmen / Business owners starting out is we get too busy and we tend to wear too many hats. So a harmless mis-communication turns into something that seems malicious and dishonest. My reality of that situation was that I underpriced the job because I had no idea that member's roof decking and framing were rotten and needed replaced. Also we thought we could move an Electrical meter much more easily than the way it turned out. I am in a tough business and we don't always get it 100% right with a remodel or working on existing work. But I am committed to learning from and not repeating mistakes I priced this job very cheaply to take care of some unsightly problems as well as a roof / soffit leak that the member's had been dealing with. The reason I did this was to get try and get some bigger jobs from the individual that I had also priced ( master bedroom remodel & Kitchen remodel ). I made zero profit on the jobs I did for her, and explained to her that I we had found some problems with the roof and roof decking as well as the issue with the electrical meter. She agreed to the extra charges and that was that, I did complete the job, which I have with every job that I have ever taken. As to why member waited 2 years to make this report, I am baffled. but I respect the process at Angie's List and have made so many improvements over the last 2 years, we are not even the same company. We are much better at serving our customers, performing quality work and communication as you can see with the other reports. I had no idea that member felt this way and would have been happy to talk about it. I am always available by phone and in person by appointment. In Closing I am committed to constantly improving our processes and building a quality driven company to serve our customers Michael"
