The first service call involved an initial review of our home for mice. The associate talked about the various service packages and costs. We walked around the exterior of the house and he pointed out the access points where mice may enter and leave the house. I purchased a 30 day plan that includes various mouse traps inside and outside my house. I also plan to purchase an additional package that includes sealing the access points. I am anticipating a follow-up call regarding the access points in about 2 weeks. I rated the responsiveness as B because of the lag between emails to Varment and the responses by the technicians. Since the techs are out in the field, responses often take a few days. At this point, I would still recommend Varment Guard's services.

I participated in the Beechwold Rat Summer of 2013, much to my complete horror. I saw one outside and I was terrified. I chose Varment Guard based on the recommendations of friends. Bill Nahoney became my combination guardian and avenging angel. He investigated my property and placed enclosed bait traps. He returned 4 times to monitor for continued activity (thank heavens it lessened then stopped altogether) and to refill the traps. He was kind and professional and knowledgeable and more than tolerant of my fear. Based on his behavior and the results I received, I most wholeheartedly would recommend this company.

After 24 hours there were still many ants on our Kitchen counter which we were advised not to kill as the Idea was to have the ants take the poison back to the nest to kill the entire colony or colonies. After 48 hours no ants. It has been 6 days and no signs of ants anywhere in the house. Don't know about the mice. I had not seen a mouse for at least 2 months but we have had an occasional one in the basement. I usually set a mouse trap in the evening when we noticed droppings or spotted one. Always had the mouse the next morning dead in the trap. Didn't feel they were a problem since we had maybe 2 or 3 a year, but they had a reasonable price to treat both. I have used this provider before for bat removal.
Description of Work: Treated for a major ant infestation in the basement and Kitchen. Also found fresh mouse droppings in the basement. Placed Ant and Mouse baits and also sprayed for ants.

The price may seem a bit high, but the value of what I have received has also been high. The contractor found several openings in my "new-to-me" house where animals had high potential of entering, and these were all secured. They returned every day for one week until trapping the squirrel that was nesting in my gutter. When a squirrel returned to my gutter a few months later, Varment Guard returned at no charge to install a stronger patch and clean out the gutter / trap the squirrel. The people I have dealt with there have been very nice, responsive and understanding. I would use them again.
Description of Work: Added screens to house vents to prevent animal intruders; fixed opening in gutter where squirrels were entering; installed chimney caps to prevent animal intruders; trapped squirrel that was entering gutter.

Drew came out and I told him about the problem we were having with a persistent woodpecker. The woodpecker showed up last year and drilled a hole on the back corner of our house near the roof. This year he came back and drilled several more holes in the front. When Drew came for the initial visit, he caught a chickadee actually going in and out of one of the bigger holes. So there were two birds involved - the woodpecker did the work and the chickadee took over and nested in it. Charlie was the actual tech who came out and patched the holes and applied a repellant that will stick to the birds feet. He fixed the holes in the front and back of the house and also painted the wood trim. We were pleased with the results. It probably is a stop gap measure and we will eventually have to cover the wood trim on the other areas of our house with siding but for now the problem is fixed. I went out in our backyard today and heard the sound of a woodpecker on the street behind us!
Description of Work: Cleaned out the nesting, plugged the holes with compound, sprayed bird repellant, and painted the patched holes.

The treatment went off without a hitch. They came on time, I gave them a tour of our home and we checked to be sure my prep work was satisfactory. They arrived at 8am and called me when the treatment was complete at 3pm. In addition to treating the house they put encasements on every mattress in my home (part of the overall cost) and "black-outs" on the feet of all the bed in my home (to "catch" any remaining bed bugs that may have survived). We haven't found any evidence of bedbugs since they extermination (almost 2 months ago). Our home was left in good condition. I hope I never ever ever have to use this company again, but if I had to I certainly would. They were a pleasure to work with given the circumstances.
Description of Work: Varment Guard heat treated our first and second floors for bed bugs and chemical treated our basement for bed bugs. They promptly came to do a free inspection of our home and mattresses, and were very clear about what services would be provided. In the week leading up to the treatment, our main contact (Anita) was available via phone, text, and email. She even stopped over twice (free of charge) to review the prep work I'd been doing to be sure the treatment would be successful. I was so thankful to have such responsive and knowledgeable representative to deal with such a big (and stressful) job.

First call was very nice woman who evaluated property inside and out and placed traps where she noticed droppings. I called them because a lot of activity in my pantry where mouse/mice were eating through cereal boxes, and other dry goods. I paid fee for service up front. They directed me to put all food inside plastic containers which I did. We continued to notice mice droppings in pantry and other places and traps not disturbed. A manager came out and put more toxic traps in home locations.. Again, the mice continued activity. A period of six weeks went by. Finally, one day we opened cabinet and noticed mouse there which I killed with a broom. Will not hire Varmint Guard again.

I am very sorry for [removed member name] problem with mice. We of course do not want any of our customers to have problems with our service. We are not sure if [removed member name] is talking about us because we have not done any work out at her house since June of 2012 when she canceled our service. It was quarterly at the time and due to no activity and our service was not needed. I will be happy to help [removed member name] with her problem if she requires service for mouse removal. I have used Varment Guard in the past for issues with mice in my basement. The initial treatments were successful but they wanted me as long as there's a way to get in, the problem might persist unless a barrier was placed between the layers of siding and the house. Haven't had an issue since. They are professional and on time and I REALLY like that the same two people come out every time . Karl and Bill are wonderful. Karl takes the time to explain the problem, your options, costs etc. Bill has had to crawl into some pretty tight quarters (not for this but for the mice) and he is always so good natured. He was the same way today and assured I would not be losing my porch to ants ; ) I don't like having to deal with issues like mice and ants but I can honestly say I look forward to catching up with Karl and Bill ; ) In all cases, I also appreciated they noted that I have dogs in the house and assured me the treatments would not be harmful to them. I'd recommend this company, they're worth the cost if you have an extermination issue.
Description of Work: Had what looked like wood boring insects in the room of my sunporch. Karl came out to evaluate the situation and give me an estimate the day after I called and we set up an appointment for the work to be done a few days thereafter once he determined it was carpenter ants (normally it would be quicker but there was a holiday. Bill N. came out promptly today and sprayed the perimeter of house as well as inserted a product in the seams where the sunporch roof meets the house and where the activity was located.

From start to finish the process was great. Initially I just wanted an estimate when they came out to deal with some critter problems I was having. I sent an email inquiry and was responded to the same day with scheduling options. Each step of the way was made so simple. Anita came to do the initial assessment. She was punctual, professional, and extremely informative. She gave me tips on things I could do myself instead of calling a contractor out. Actually, everyone I dealt with was like that. I have been fortunate enough to deal with some great companies, but they are the best I have dealt with thus far. What an awesome example of great customer service and their prices are excellent too.
Description of Work: They sanitize, deodorized, and put TAP insulation in my attic after some critters had made quite a mess of things, 584 sq feet for $1500 . They would have removed the insulation, but due to my budget constraints, I removed the existing insulation myself. I also had them treat for critter issues such as the mice getting in my walls. This involved laying bate traps and more($300ish).

We had two bats take up residence on a Joist or Truss that held up a permanent roof over our Patio which ran parallel along the back of our garage. There was a 1/2 to 1 inch gap where the bats were located. I unfortunately can't remember the name of the guy who came out and did the work, but he was on time and polite. He removed both bats and placed them in a cage. They were in full hibernation and not responsive at all. He then cut and placed flashing in the gap using screws and caulk. Very pleased with the work done.

After the heavy rains in July I was seeing carpenter ants in the kitchen, where we had never had any ants before. I called for an estimate and they came out the next day. He looked over the situation and gave an estimate, which I accepted right away since we have had experience with the company before. He worked hard to schedule the treatment by the end of the week, since we were leaving for vacation. He wasn't able to reach the crew in the field right away, but told me he would call back as soon as he heard from them. Within two hours, I received a phone call saying that they would be out in two days. When the employee came out she listened to where I had seen the ants and went around to those areas and "puffed" an ant irritant into cracks and crevices to see if she could see any activity. She also went into the basement to check all the areas that they might be found as well as outside around the house. The only place she saw activity was outside on a big tree next to the patio. She felt that the rains had driven the ants to look in the house for food. She sprayed the perimeter of the house and layed bait down at the base of the tree. She also gave me baits if I saw action in the kitchen in the future. She also said to call immediately if we saw ants in the house, and she would be out to deal with it. We have been ant free since! Great experience!

The person was here promptly at our appointment time and spent 45 minutes at my house. He thoroughly inspected the property for evidence of skunks, asked me a bunch of questions and then said that he was pretty convinced that we do not have a skunk problem in the crawl space. He walked me around my property, explained what to look for and educated me about skunk behavior. He came up with a good theory about what had caused the skunk smell and said that if we had a future problem to call and he would come back. He did not charge me since he did not have to remove any critters. He was polite, thorough and informative.

Mark responded to my service call for a scratching sound coming from the ceiling and ants on the outside porches and walks. He baited the attic and treated the outside for ants. I asked for the one-time service which is warrantied for 90 days. I August I herd the scratching sound again. Mark returned and discovered that the baits in the attic were not disturbed so further investigation revealed a small hole were the mice were entering the basement and then up the wall. He plugged the hole and provided additional baits in the basement at no additional charge. Varment Guard is not the cheapest but their work and products are very good and they stand behind their service. A good value.

Three individuals came to our house on three separate days. The first person came the same day I requested service and placed a trap with peanut butter bait in the wood burning stove. I noticed the next day that the trap had been triggered, but the squirrel was not in the trap so a second person came and placed a smaller trap in a slightly different location. By the next day, the squirrel had been caught so a third person came, removed the trap and squirrel, and attached a wire mesh around the chimney cap. All of the individuals were polite and professional.

It went great. I called them because I saw a raccoon in my basement, and it growled at me! I had had a continuing problem with groundhogs outside. The guy who came out first, Karl, was friendly and knowledgable and explained what they would do. One thing I like about Varment Guard is that although they are efficient about removing the animals, they take care not to hurt them. The raccoon in my basement turned out to be a mother with babies, who took up residence inside my chimney (which is where she got in in the first place). Troy, another nice guy who did the trapping, etc., set a balloon-type monitor inside my chimney, so he could tell when she had gone out, and when he was sure she was gone he capped the chimneys, front and back (the covers up there had rusted). He came every day and checked the traps front and back, and caught two possums! But the groundhog living in the back proved elusive, eating the apple and springing the trap. Then I didn't see him for several days and we thought he had left. Varment Guard finished their contracted work the 4th of July, and the groundhog immediately showed up again! But Troy came back out three more times and caught him!! So I am very happy with Varment Guard. Right now I am creature-free, but if I ever have a problem again I will call them.

Two men came out, an older, very professional man and a younger trainee. The older man was polite, seemed very knowledgeable, checked out this issue as well as inspecting another, inside insect issue we were having and for which he gave a separate estimate. (We feared the insects could be termites; he explained they were acrobat ants that eat insulation--the debris we were seeing was not structurally damaging.) He said the hole was almost surely from a raccoon, saw no evidence of them himself with visual inspection with flashlight from the ladder, but still pointed out it was breeding season, and since we had heard some noises, that he would not recommend sealing the house up with any possibility at all that there were animals in there--the hole, he said, was definite evidence they had been there at some point. We followed the recommendations of both companies and followed through on the service. They put a cage on the roof with food in it and planned to leave it there ten days, check daily for animals or evidence the food was eaten. At one point, a snow storm came through (as had been predicted) and they closed the cage, not checking it as the cold temps and snow meant the animals would not be out anyway. They reopened the cages and completed the process. On the 9th day, a squirrel was caught, but we were all sure it had come for the peanut butter and was never inside the house. We paid them, the repairs were completed by the other company, and we've had no problems since. It's a bit frustrating to have had to pay this much money and found no animals, and it's hard not to wonder if it had really been necessary at all--we never really thought we had raccoons--but we determined it best not to seal the house without having it done. And, of course, had they found something, it would have been a very good thing we had taken the time and expense to do it. As I work at home, I would have felt better throughout if they had knocked on the door each day they said they inspected. I only saw and heard them do it once and was always concerned whether or not they were actually checking. The final paperwork from the company showed a checklist, though, with dates the worker(s) had come and noted nothing found.
Description of Work: Wind damage to the front of our home tore down several pieces of vinyl siding revealing a hole that had possibly been made by a raccoon. We had heard some noises in one upper bedroom that we were sure, when we talked to the siding company, were made by the loose siding, but the service man for that company recommended Varmit Guard as we could not rule out the possibility that "critters" had been in the attic at some time...and it was mating season. They did not want to repair and seal the house without inspection by a pest control company.
