It turned out to be a great experience working with Harder Bros. This was a huge project that went well from the very beginning in large part to their work ethics, knowledge and performance. From the first day when Matt Harder came out for the estimate, we knew they were the ones we wanted to work with. We did our homework in researching them thru BBB and other web sites besides making numerous calls to previous clients and tradesmen they work with. Steve Harder was the point man for our remodeling and he was wonderful to work with. Our work began on June 6, 2011 and we moved back in on November 15, 2011. We put a lot of thought and research into what we wanted our remodel to look like and Harder Bros. did not disappoint. We did not hesitate to ask Steve for his opinion and peppered him with a load of questions before we started and during construction. Any problems that came up during the remodel did not cause us to lose any sleep because we could trust Steve. That's means a lot from us because over time we have worked with many contractors and handymen - some good and some bad. They were always reachable by phone, text or email. They stayed within our budget and any cost increase was run by us first. With a job this big, some unforeseen things were to be expected because of the age of the house and scope of the work. The unforeseen things were few and I credit this to Steve's and Matt's experience and knowledge in planning out our job. All the workers were top notch and non-work days were few and far between. Steve stayed in touch constantly and always let us know what the next week would bring during the different stages of work. Also, the quality of the materials used were very good. They do not cut corners or take shortcuts. Our house is just beautiful now and we know it was done right. Steve is still in and out occasionally finishing up some of the small things that needed adjusting after we moved back in. Again, easy to reach and doesn't hesitate to care for whatever the problem might be. We're going to tear down our existing garage and build a new one this summer. It's nice to know that we don't have to search for a contractor to do this. Harder Bros. will be getting our call. We can't recommend them highly enough. You won't be disappointed.
Description of Work: We contracted with Harder Bros for a complete gutting of our 125 year old 2 story residence along with adding an attic addition. All new plumbing, electrical, windows, doors, insulation, roofing, siding, gutters and heating/ac. Framing of the attic addition and all inside carpentry work. All the finishing touches - kitchen cabinets, counters, flooring, etc. The list could go on and on.

Our experience with Harder Brothers was fantastic. This project was a huge undertaking and they worked hard to make it seamless. The project was done ahead of schedule. In fact, Steve and Matt worked hard to finish before Christmas! It was a very positive experience from the detailed estimate at the start to the finishing touches at the end. I would highly recommend Harder Brothers and will use them for all remodeling projects in the future.

We only had one bathroom and were lucky enough to stay at a friend's while bathroom was getting done, although an alternate option was availble to us to stay in our own home while it was going on.....we just opted not to go with putting a temporary shower in our basement. While we were out of the house, both Harder brothers were responsible and professional enough and used a key/key box to gain entry and complete work. I would get phone calls and emails everyday with updated informatoin and progress. I NEVER had a problem getting ahold of them or waiting around for them to call me back. Any changes or questions were returned with a prompt response. We came to the house 2 or 3 times within the 11 days it took to complete and before I knew it, I had a beautiful bathroom done exactly how I wanted it. Enough said.

They rescheduled their appointment three times. After they finally came out to look at the job, they called back a few days later to say they got a bigger job, and therefore had no interest in my project. Maybe they only do big deals? In any event, they were pretty much a waste of my time (at least they called, though).

I contacted the company at least 2 separate times and left a message. Nobody from the company has ever called back.
Description of Work: I contacted Harder Brothers to discuss some exterior remodeling including siding replacement, dormer construction, and exterior stone work.
It was one of the smoothest projects I have ever had done in our house! The Harder Bros. were wonderful to work with, and their time line and estimates were right on. They always called with updates/status/information I needed, and were always really personable and friendly. They were true professionals, did quality work, and our basement turned out beautifully. We are very happy with the results, and would definitely use Harder Bros. again in the future.
Description of Work: The Harder Bros. did a complete demolition and remodel of our basement (including the installation of a new wet bar) & basement bathroom. Work completed included everything - plumbing, drywall, electrical, carpentry trim work, etc.
Matt was excellent. Harder Brothers was the third company I contracted to do the job, the others having been unreliable and unable to do the job within budget. Matt and his subcontractors not only did the job as asked, but did so with utmost quality of work. Everyone who comes in comments on the quality of their workmanship and aesthetic and material choices. Matt and his brother Steve added little details - like secret hiding compartments for my son, and a column of salvaged subway tiles behind the sink in the master bath. Throughout Matt was extremely personable and, above all, honest. I always felt I could talk openly with him about what I wanted and get reasonable answers and creative solutions back. He was willing to work with me on making our rehab as green as possible, and was willing to do more research and draw on his own background as an architect to make the project unique. I asked a lot of unusual things of him, and he delivered. Can't recommend him highly enough.
Description of Work: Matt did a full gut rehab/restoration on an abandoned 1888 single family frame house - full plumbing, electrical, drywall, paint, deck, windows, siding, kitchen, concrete counters, and tile bath, etc. He found a good balance between restoring original details (oak floors, stairwell, curved plaster) and bringing the house up to code and comfort, using green techniques and materials where possible (recycled paper insulation, 93% efficiency zone heating, salvaged materials). Moreover, he did so for far less than other bids, stayed in the budget, and maintained absolute quality work throughout. They did not cut corners and often went well beyond what was asked to add finishing touches. My house is now beautiful and has more than doubled in value. Neighbors still stop by to thank me for improving the community and to peek inside at how we restored this structure that several contractors suggested was hopeless, only suited for tear down. Hope to have them finish my attic.

We didn't do it because the cost was too high, but there cost was lower than other bids we got.
Description of Work: They didn't perform the work because the cost was more than we anticipated, but we were impressed by their professionalism throughout the bid process. Their quote was lower than others we got, but as we are retired we just couldn't do what we wanted to do and keep the cost within a range that would accommodate our fixed income. However, we wanted everyone to know how impressed we were with Matt and Steve and if we could have afforded it, we would have gone with them.

The Harder brothers were very responsive and professional in providing an estimate. They advised not proceeding with demolition and rebuilding of a floor area because the cost would be too high. We proceeded with a contractor who found some options to get the work done at a lower cost so the project could be built to plan. Overall we would definitely consider Harder Brothers for future work.

Requested a quote from the Harder Brothers (Steve). Everything I requested seemed as if they could do without any problem. Told they could start immediately because it was "fill in work" and would take only 3 days. I then asked when I could get a quote and he stated he would have it in a week. Well a week came and went and I received nothing. I thought that they were probably busy so I waited a few more days. On Friday the May 18th I called Steve and asked him where the quote was he told me he lost my number and that he sent me a partial quote via email. He further went on to tell me they won a couple of large projects and that he can't work on my project at all now. I thought this was a total blow off. I have no problem with a person/company telling me from the beginning that a project is too small but just like I don't like wasting people's time, I don't appreciate my time being wasted. By the way, the email he sent didn't even provide the partial quote he mentioned.
Description of Work: Requested a quote to redesign my kitchen by removing some cabinetry as well as tearing down a common wall between the kitchen and the living room. Location of appliances were to be moved as well.

I APOLOGIZE TO HIM FOR THE MISCOMMUNICATION BUT I DON'T THINK HE FULLY UNDERSTOOD WHAT I HAD TOLD HIM. UPON OUR INITIAL MEETING, I TOOK MY MEASUREMENTS AND WENT OVER WITH HIM EXACTLY WHAT HE HAD IN MIND FOR THE PROJECT. I TOLD HIM THAT I WOULD GET BACK IN TOUCH WITH HIM THE FOLLOWING WEEK AND HE EXPRESSED TO ME THAT EMAIL COMMUNICATION WOULD BE THE BEST WAY. THE FOLLOWING WEEK I DID EMAIL HIM EXPLAINING THAT TWO LARGE PROJECTS THAT WE WERE CURRENTLY BIDDING CAME UNDER CONTRACT AND THAT REGRETFULLY WE WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO ASSIST HIM ON HIS. WHILE WE APPRECIATE ALL OF THE WORK WE CAN GET, WE PRIDE OURSELVES ON NOT OVERBOOKING OUR SCHEDULE SO WE CAN GIVE OUR CLIENTS AND THEIR PROJECTS THE ATTENTION THEY DESERVE. AS FOR THE "PARTIAL QUOTE", HE MUST HAVE BEEN THINKING OF ANOTHER CONTRACTOR BECAUSE IT WAS NEVER PROMISED TO HIM. I FEEL THAT WE HANDLED THE SITUATION IN A PROFESSIONAL MANNER AND NOTIFIED HIM AS SOON AS WE WERE AWARE OF OUR SCHEDULING SITUATION.

The overall experience with Harder Brothers INC is a disappointment and a waste of our time. They do not appear to be credible. We met with one of the owners and spent hours explaining what are to be done to our kitchen and bath. Pictures were taken and the kitchen design/measurements/specs/appliance list were also provided to vendor for an estimate. Vendor confirmed availability for project during interview and provided an estimate 3 days after meeting. However, after we expressed interest to proceed and requested the detailed proposal as well as proof of license/insurance/bonds, the vendor not only failed to provide all documentation requested by the time they committed, but also suddenly backed out and claimed they became unavailable for our project even after we offered to be flexible to accomodate their schedule.

AS WE ALL KNOW, THERE ARE MANY PROBLEMATIC CONTRACTORS OUT THERE, YET THIS CAN ALSO BE TRUE OF CUSTOMERS. AFTER MEETING WITH THIS MEMBER, WE DETERMINED THAT A PROFESSIONAL RELATIONSHIP WOULD NOT BE ADVANTAGEOUS. ALSO, A VERBAL QUOTE WAS PROVIDED TO THIS MEMBER AND THE RESPONSE INDICATED THAT THE PROJECT WAS OUT OF THEIR PRICE RANGE. DESPITE THIS RESPONSE, THE MEMBER INSISTED UPON A DETAILED PROPOSAL AND DRAWINGS ACCOMPANIED BY A LICENSE, PROOF OF INSURANCE AND A BOND. FIRST OF ALL, A DETAILED PROPOSAL AND DRAWINGS REQUIRE A SUBSTANTIAL AMOUNT OF WORK, AND ARE TYPICALLY PROVIDED ONLY WHEN A CLIENT SHOWS REASONABLE INTEREST IN A WORKING RELATIONSHIP. SECONDLY, WHILE WE HAVE A LICENSE, INSURANCE, AND BOND AND WILL GLADLY PROVIDE THEM TO ANY OF OUR PROSPECTIVE CLIENTS, WE DO NOT LIKE TO GIVE THEM TO PEOPLE WITH WHOM WE HAVE NO INTENTION OF WORKING. FINALLY, WE PRIDE OURSELVES ON NOT OVERBOOKING OUR SCHEDULE, SO WE CAN PROVIDE FULL ATTENTION TO CLIENTS UNDER CONTRACT. WE HAVE NUMEROUS POSITIVE RESPONSES FROM CONTRACTED CLIENTS THAT CONTRADICT THIS MEMBER'S PERSPECTIVE.

The Harder Brothers were referred to me by my parents after they had work done to their house by Matt and Steve, and I was so pleased to have people I can really trust working on my own home. Harder Brothers' price was very competitive and they really came through on every aspect of the project from helping me make design decisions to finishing the project on time and on budget. Matt and Steve took the time to answer all of my questions, as numerous as they were, and were very informative and reassuring throughout the entire construction process. I am so happy with my new home, and I am very excited to have Matt and Steve as my new "go-to-guys" for all of our construction needs.
Description of Work: Harder Brothers constructed a second story room addition and fully rehabbed our existing first floor. The addition included a master suite (including a master bedroom and bath), a fourth bedroom, a full bathroom, a loft area, and a grand staircase. The rehab included two existing bedrooms, a full bathroom, a powder room, a kitchen, a dining room, and a living room, along with the foyer and hallways. Harder Brothers also re-sided the entire house, replaced all the windows and doors, installed new trim throughout the house, installed new flooring, updated all the plumbing and electrical, installed a new furnace and air conditioner. I could go on, but basically I was left with an entirely new home.

Matt and Steve Harder did an excellent job on our basement. They provided a number of possible floor plans to choose from. I highly recommend them and will use them again.
