Speidel Flooring is a rip-off. They are eager to sell you something but the minute there's a problem, they ignore you. I will not set foot in this place again and I recommend that nobody else does, either. Mark Speidel talked to me like I was some sort of nuisance to him. He was rude, cocky, and arrogant. I have high standards but I don't think we were out of line by wanting our trim to be nailed to our wall or by wanting our doors to fit the frame enough to be closed. The craftsmanship was awful and I don't recommed Speidel Flooring OR Muckey Flooring Installation. We have since paid someone to cut our doors down enough to fit and will now have to purchase, paint, and pay someone to install all new trim. What was supposed to just be a simple installment, did not turn out to be. We have been dealing with this since February 2010 and it's now July 2011. I hope we can help someone else from spending their hard-earned money on faulty products and poor craftsmanship. The price of the flooring itself and the installation is what drew us in, but looking back, I wish we would have just gone with someone more professional, even if it meant spending more.
Description of Work: We decided to replace our livingroom carpet with hardwood flooring. The salesman at Speidel Flooring seemed to know what he was talking about so we trusted him and purchased the flooring. (We had purchased carpet/linoleum with Speidel's in the past and the installation was a tad shady but we were happy overall with the installment, and the price.) Nearly a month after the flooring was installed by Muckey Flooring, who was recommended by Speidel, it began to shift. We thought it was normal so we didn't think much of it at this point. However, after several more months the floor had 1/4 " gaps so we called Speidel. They were not concerned and reassured us that it was normal for the flooring. When our children began getting slivers (our 6 month-old had them in his knees...) we phoned them to have a look at it, just to make sure it was "normal" shifting. They did visit, several weeks after they initially said they would, and told us that it was the humidity in our home that was warping the wood, not their problem. We purchased a humidity monitor and also spoke with an expert on flooring in the midwest, as well as other flooring dealers, that told us it was NOT our humidity but most likely the installation or even the flooring itself. After being ignored for a couple months, after several phone calls and visits to Speidel, they brought their own experts to our home to assess the damage. Some time later, after much haggling, they agreed to replace the flooring...only after getting paid from the manufacturer to do so. They wanted to replace it with the same flooring, from the same pallet, and have the same installer. To replace it "correctly" they would have to glue it down. This did not please us so they agreed to let us pick out a new floor, which we did, and had to put in new subfloor to prevent gapping due to a difference in thickness. (It was quite a bit more expensive but we were willing to pay the difference.) They told us it would be in in 4 days....it took 4 weeks. Not a phone call from them to tell us what was going on. We were just supposed to wait. Walking around on subflooring for 4 weeks and trying to keep a crawling baby off it was laughable. FINALLY when the floor did arrive, they put it in and it looked beautiful....until we looked at the trim. It is falling off our wall and has giant gaps in it. The threshold between our living room and kitchen is 1/2" high and dangerous...we have ALL tripped over it several times. Then, they scratched the threshold to the bathroom (beyond repair) when they tried to put the door back on. (It didn't fit, so they just left.) I visited them to see if they could do something about it and they reassured me that the installer would be back to fix it....and then I could pay them the $500 that was owed to them. (It was originally $700 but the salesman took some off....not enough for all we had been through!) That was over a month ago. I visited them again and was told by Mark, the boss, that I should just pay them to have the situation resolved. I told them that the installer should be taken off the "recommended" list and was told that he is a great installer and they get compliments on his work. I'm pretty sure that's a lie.
