I called in Century Link. The technician came and said all the cables had been put in wrong. The technician from Century Link fixed it in five minutes, gave us a tutorial while I took notes, and refused to charge us for it as he said it was a trivial job but to call him if we had any trouble at all.
"This is an inaccurate portrayal of the job, so please allow us to address the complaint. First, we understand the customer's television entirely; this was not an issue. We were called out to, in the customer's words, "Hook up our equipment the way it was in Boston" as they had recently moved to this area. TVs and related equipment can be hooked up in many ways, and each way will require different steps to use each piece of equipment. Though she wanted to utilize the steps she was accustomed to in her previous home, the customer could not tell us how this was hooked previously. Furthermore, the auxiliary equipment included a central home theater box with unmarked buttons and slots and no owner's manual or diagram. Because of this, yes, going through trials testing the different inputs took some time. Had we been provided any resource to help, it would have been faster. There are hundreds of such boxes on the market. No servicer can reasonably be expected to have all the inputs and outputs memorized. We rely on diagrams and often programming codes provided by the manufacturer of each piece of equipment. In any case, for the cost of our basic home service call, we did stay and made the effort, and when we left the TV and auxilliary equipment were functional. We did advise the customer to get her cable company out, because when they hooked up the cable box initially, they did not program the cable remote for the TV--another issue requiring a code unknown to us. (The TV remote worked the TV, but the cable remote did not.) We left everything else functional and programmed. We are disappointed to learn this customer was not satisfied, but we feel we did the best we could with the limited information we had to work with."
