Description of Work: Alan who is the only person that does the work, did an outstanding job on our backsplash in the kitchen and bar area. He is there when they say he will be and takes him time to make sure everything is done correctly. He even did things we didn't even think of such as wrapping the tile around the window frame that's overlooks the sink. I would strongly recommend them to anyone looking for a quality job for a reasonable price. Thanks for the great work, our house looks beautiful!

Description of Work: Final product was good work. Purchased a Big Deal for 4 hours labor for $150. This equated to a $300 credit on a "larger" job (7'x8' bathroom floor w/o trim did not seem large to me). Diane (Alan's wife) quoted labor & materials (if I did subfloor & provided tile) at $500 after credit. Alan showed up to do the job & said he needed to "float" the whole floor to level it and it was going to be an extra $300 for labor & materials. Not sure if floating the floor was really 4 hours work, but agreed to move forward on the job. When asked about grout color, I said I wanted a black grout and was told it would be $35 more (OK, but it was never mentioned earlier). I came home to look at the final product and found about 30 small gaps in the grout (1/8" to 3/8" holes - later explained as bubbles). Called Alan back to fix and he did. A person with years of experience surprised me with issues like: underquote job, not mention extra for black grout and gaps in grout. Final product looks good.

It went well. The job took about three days. Alan Hamilton was very professional. I think I was measured for more tile than what was needed, but otherwise the back splash looks good.

The good: the quote was reasonable & Angie did a great job on the tile/accents/grout lines. The bad: Alan did very poor cleanup job. I spent over an hour of my time cleaning up the mess he left behind: removed scrap wallboard & garbage from my garage, cleaned grout residue left on door handles & front door, scraped & vacuumed grout blotches from the tile surface, baseboards, and shower base. Also, not specifically included in the quote, is a strip of unfinished wall board approximately 8" wide. I expected that anything installed as part of the job would be finished and ready to paint. Now I have to have a drywall contractor out to finish the job. One other item: Angie recommended using a leftover accent piece above the toilet and we agreed. We would have said no if we knew Alan was going to tack on another $100 to the bill at the end for "over toilet".
Description of Work: Removed carpet and 1" tile, installed 12" tile in toilet and bathroom sink areas, approximately 80 square feet. Installed wallboard, 6" tile and accents in shower enclosure and behind toilet, approximately 70 square feet.

Response from Alan Hamilton Ceramic
FIRST OF ALL, WE REMOVED ALL THE DEBRIS CONNECTED WITH OUR PROJECT. IF THERE HAD BEEN ROOM ON THE TRUCK FOR ADDITIONAL TRASH WE WOULD HAVE BEEN HAPPY TO ACCOMMODATE HIM ASSUMING THERE WAS NOTHING THAT WOULD NOT BE ACCEPTED BY THE FACILITY. IT IS BECOMING INCREASINGLY DIFFICULT TO FIND PLACES TO DISCARD THE TRASH. MOST CONTRACTORS DO NOT REMOVE IT. IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE HOMEOWNER. WE HAVE A VERY GOOD REPUTATION AND ARE VERY ADAMANT ABOUT CLEANING UP. YOU CAN READ OTHER REPORTS THAT CONFIRM THIS. THE TOOLS AND MATERIALS ARE PUT UP EVERY NIGHT AND THE WORK AREA LEFT CLEAN AND FREE OF CLUTTER. THAT ITSELF CAN BE A TIME CONSUMING THING WHEN YOU ARE ON A JOB FOR SEVERAL DAYS. IT IS PART OF OUR WORKDAY. HAD HE BROUGHT ANY OF THAT TO OUR ATTENTION AT THE TIME, IT WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN AN ISSUE. WE WERE TOTALLY TAKEN BY SURPRISE AT HIS REPORT AND DID NOT KNOW THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH ANY OF THE CLEANUP OR HAULING ISSUES. AT THE TIME OF THE PROPOSAL I INFORMED THE CUSTOMER THAT THE DAMAGE TO THE SHOWER WALLS EXTENDED OUTSIDE THE SHOWER AREA THAT WOULD BE TILED. I ALSO INFORMED HIM THAT WE DO NOT FINISH OR PAPER OR PAINT THE AREA. I TOLD HIM THE WAY WE HANDLE THAT IS TO EXTEND THE TILE ALONG THAT WALL TO THE ADJACENT ONE. HE DECLINED AND SAID HE PREFERRED TO FINISH AND PAPER IT. THE $100 CHARGE WAS FOR TIME, APPROXIMATELY 2 HOURS AND MATERIALS TO EXTEND THE TILE OVER THAT AREA TO THE END WALL. THAT SEEMED FAIR AND REASONABLE. THE DENSHEILD THAT IS USED FOR THE WALL BOARD IN THE SHOWER IS NOT SUCH AS CAN BE PAINTED OR FINISHED SO DRYWALL WAS INSTALLED FOR HIM TO FINISH. EXTENDING THE TILE MAKES THE BEST ALTERNATIVE. IT WAS NOT ON THE PROPOSAL BECAUSE HE DECLINED. AS I STATED EARLIER WE WERE VERY SURPRISED AT HIS REPORT AS WE TAKE THIS VERY SERIOUSLY. THE CUSTOMERS THAT CALL FROM ANGIE'S LIST GENERALLY ARE DISCERNING AND WE HAVE ALWAYS MADE THEM VERY HAPPY.

We were very impressed with the company right from the start. Alan's wife, Diane, came by to give us an estimate. She was very knowledgeable about the business and answered all of our questions. By the time she left, we were settled on using Alan Hamilton. Alan was very prompt and polite. The job took three days, and he would always call to let us know when he would be arriving. He put cloth down to protect the floor and cleaned up as he went along. His workmanship is beautiful! It is such a joy to use that bathroom again. It shows that he has really turned his business into an art form.
Description of Work: Work was done by Alan Hamilton, owner. Alan removed existing ceramic tile and old wallboard around tub and hauled away trash. He replaced with new denshield and installed new ceramic tile.
The work went very well in every way and they are extremely nice people to work with. They were always easy to reach to answer questions and the quality of their work was excellent. Tiling can be a messy business, but they were very professional, neat and always cleaned up after themselves. They obviously take great pride in their work, and I always felt, that we could trust them. They also, maintain an excellent and informative website, which is a very good resource for consumer information.
Description of Work: Two of our showers were leaking badly. Water was puddling under the shower floors and the tiles were loose and moldy. Alan Hamilton tore out the old shower floors, including lower areas of the tiled shower walls. He corrected the existing structural problems in the showers, rebuilt the floors, installed new liners and shower pans, and retiled the floors and lower walls of both showers.

Alan and his assistant, Angie, worked straight through to remove the old tile, prepare the surfaces, install and grout the new tile until the job was done at a minimum inconvenience to us. Very professional and the finished product was everything we had hoped for. I did not check the bid by getting other quotes, but if the price is higher I would say the workmanship is worth it. It took a little over a month, before they could get to my job, but this was not a problem. The estimator was not good at keeping us informed, as to when the work would start and I had to contact her to keep on top of the start date, which moved from the original estimate.
Description of Work: Removed existing tile in kitchen, entry hall, bath and installed 18x18 porcelain tile in above area, plus office. Installed 4x8 Spanish red wirecut pavers on front and back porches.

The whole experience was very positive. The estimate was accurate, they showed up when promised, they were very neat, they finished on time and the job is BEAUTIFUL. Their tile installer, Angie, is the hardest working person we have ever met. She had some excellent suggestions about some decorating touches. The result is beautiful and we could not be happier. I would definitely recommend them.
