Bad quality and way over budget. Do not trust Curtis: he is a lier. Our neighbor had similar experience with their bath remodeling.

Curtis Jones of CJ Custom Carpentry was contracted in the fall of 2014 to remodel our master bathroom. It all went well at that time. 3 years later, we noticed our shower leaking and called Curtis to come evaluate the problem. He came twice in 3 months and did not solve the problem and actually gave some pretty lame reasons as to why we had drywall damage and a wet vanity. We gave up with Curtis and tried to fix the problem ourselves, but were unsuccessful. We later contacted another general contractor who removed our shower floor to find out it was improperly installed, did not have a shower pan/liner under the floor and had been leaking, probably from the time the remodel was done. We found black mold behind the walls, wall studs that were wet, improper lining behind the tile shower walls and water standing on the slab under the shower floor. It was obvious to us this was very shoddy workmanship. We spent over $2000 to have repairs done. Our remodel was approx. $17,000, way too much to spend to have to have it redone 4 years later. I would not choose CJ Custom Carpentry to do any bathroom work!

From start to finish, this is a great company to work with. After finding them on AL, I called to make the free consultation for an estimate. A date was set up and the owner, Curtis, showed up right on time. As I walked him through the house explaining what I wanted (which ended up being pretty abstract on some things) he took notes and made suggestions on things I wasn't sure of. He understood exactly what I was saying which was good because I wasn't 100 percent sure how to explain what I wanted in some areas! Within a few days, we received the estimate, which I thought was very competitive and reasonable. I also called 2 other Angie's List companies for estimates. Since this is about CJ, I won't go into those negative stories, but the estimate I got from one was a little higher (I never heard back from the other one) so I feel CJ’s price was good and fair. About 2 weeks after I received and accepted their contract, they commenced work. They explained they couldn't start sooner due to a job they were already working and told me they like to work straight through on a job so they can finish it fast and not bounce between 2 or 3 projects (like many companies do and really annoys me). That was good with me! I can't say enough about the quality of their work and hardworking, friendly employees. Curtis was there the first day to make sure the wall removal went right and checked in on most days. He also helped me make some aesthetic decisions I wasn't completely sure of like the column size/placement, how much wall to remove at the entrance and the direction of the tile. Within 4 weeks, the work was complete to my total satisfaction (including final inspection) and we received our final invoice. The 4 weeks was largely due to me or they probably would have been done in a week. I changed my mind numerous times on various things. I would call their office and talk to Lynette (VP and office Jack of all trades) and say "I think I want to add this or change that." She always responded pleasantly with No Problem, listened patiently to me ramble on (with lots of self-doubt on my decision making!) and never made me feel like I was being a pain, which I know I was LOL. Also, part of the holdup was our decision on tiling part or all of the areas except bedrooms AND selection of the tile. Picking a tile was super important to me and took me over 2 weeks which delayed their work and disrupted their work schedule, but they never pressured me to hurry. There was also a minor mistake due to a pinched wire which required a small removal of part of a wall in 3 areas. This was repaired immediately and it looks incredible. You would never know where it was replaced because their guy was absolutely amazing. In fact, all of his employees were excellent. They were conscientious, polite and always cleaned up any mess they made. One of the other things I love is how the floor turned out. It looks amazing and Ben, their employee who laid the tile, is an artist! He also consulted me on the direction of the tile (adding his much appreciated expert opinion as well) and really analyzed the project before even starting. It was a tedious process because with plank tiles, not only is it more important to have the grout lines absolutely perfect, you have to watch out for lippage due to the length of plank tiles. I've walked the floors, sliding my feet across and it feels perfect. The cuts he made around corners, etc. are impeccable. Also, tiling the kitchen was difficult because we have a wall dividing the kitchen from the family room. So, coming from the family room, he had to tile from the dining room on one side and the breakfast nook on the other and meet in the kitchen. It was perfect! I really love the floors and the more open look of my house! The walls turned out fantastic, it's great to be able to see out to my family room when washing dishes and I love the column. Everything turned out just as I wanted! Thank you Curtis, Lyn and team! From start to finish (and resolving the final punch list especially the vent in the guest bathroom!) you never disappointed. CJ Custom Carpentry is a top notch company that I would recommend to anyone and plan to use for any future remodeling.

This contractor works through Home Depot; they installed a solid core interior door where there was not one previously.  They did an excellent job and they cleaned up so well you wouldn't have known they had just completed work!

Jack, Jay and Matt did a great job. They were professional. Did a thorough clean up after they were done.  The shower door looks great. I can't wait to save up some money to get them to do some more renovations. They were so kind they helped me hang my Roman shades fr free . Or I should say fixed what I did wrong.
I will use them again and recommend them.

Everything went very smoothly. There were, I believe, 24 windows to be replaced, of many different sizes. The new windows are vinyl, but are double-paned. The old ones were not double paned. They were also quite old--about 20 years old.

The crew arrived at about 9:30 and stayed until the job was done at around 7 p.m. I had to move all the furniture and other "stuff" away from the windows and was embarrassed to discover how dirty it was under the furniture. My attitude was "a perfect opportunity to really clean!" When I brought out my vacuum cleaner the next day to clean up, I discovered the CJ's crew had already done that! They left the place very clean. All I had to do was put the furniture back in place.

We've been able to keep the a.c. off all day and it feels like air conditioning in here. The windows have helped a lot already.

It went well. Once again, I found CJ Custom Carpentry to be very professional. In the process of doing two bathrooms in a 60+ year old home, we had only one major hitch. The framing for the floor of the master bathroom was built several inches below the level of the bedroom floor. The gap was then filled with concrete. Nobody could figure out why it was done this way, but it required a lot of extra work tearing out the old concrete and then building a second frame on top of the first to bring the floor up to the level of the threshold. Somehow CJ and his crew managed to do all this without getting off schedule.
Although I wanted the two bathrooms to be very similar in appearance, I wanted some small differences. So, I had the shower in the master tiled diamond fashion rather than straight lay. This is more time-consuming and a bit more expensive. We also changed out the decorative mosaic. Other than this the finishes in the two bathrooms are identical.

From start to finish it went well. I interviewed three contractors, two of which were listed here. All the estimates came in close. I wound up choosing Curtis and CJ Custom Carpentry based on a few points. (These are not listed in order of importance) First thing is that after having dealt in the past with a single contractor with maybe one other person helping him, I decided I wanted an organization...a crew. That's part of what CJ offers. Secondly, I was impressed with Curtis from the moment we met him. I could tell from his presentation and carriage that he is a perfectionist. I wanted a perfectionist working on my job! Lastly, this company came very highly recommended by a friend of mine who is pretty particular about how things are done. When my friend Jodi recommended Curtis and his crew, that was the deciding factor. If he could make her happy, I knew he could make me happy.
Once the arrangements had been made, and we'd paid for the first half of the project, Curtis sent us a list of materials we'd be needing based on the bathroom's measurements. My husband and I picked all the materials ourselves. We had everything delivered to the house in time for work to begin.
We also were sent a schedule and a calendar. I knew what to expect each day. Fortunately, I work only part-time, and so was able to be present for most of this. But I did have to be away in the mornings, and since my husband works from early in the day to early evening, CJ provided a lock box so the workers could get in when we were away. When I got home, there was almost always some part of CJ's crew at work. One day it was plumbing, another day it was drywall and on another it was tile. Each task came on a particular day so that nobody was stumbling over anybody else. I was very impressed with the quality of all CJ's sub-contractors, but I have to admit that I was probably most impressed with CJ's tile guy, Ben. A real artist.
The whole thing took 13 working days. Memorial Day fell in there, and no work happened that day. And there was a plumbing inspection day when no actual work was done. And yet, it still took only 13 days.
At the end, Curtis was present for all the finishing touches. He suggested we use carrera marble for the windowsill which happens to match the marble threshold we already had. All in all, this is probably the most seamless, least stressful renovation we've been through and that includes a kitchen reno, a reno of our entire laundry area, and the addition of a large back porch...all done by other contractors over the years. I should add that the guys were very good about cleaning up after themselves. An excellent and professional experience.
We have already made plans to have CJ Custom Carpentry remodel the master bathroom and I'm very excited to have it happen ASAP!

Curtis Jones "CJ" is one of the most professional, dependable and experienced contractors I worked with. He was always on time as per scheduling, always had the crew and materials necessary to complete the job and had it done quickly with as little inconvenience as possible. Would not have any other contractor do my work. Everyone who worked for him was well qualified and really seemed happy working with him.

It went great! We went over the estimated time frame a bit, but that was because we made some additions as we went. Curtis was very patient with us and we got everything we wanted. I could not be happier with the finished result! We will definitely be using CJ Custom Carpentry again for our other home improvements.

The project went great! After a big box store sent someone out to measure and got the windows ordered, CJ came out to install and every window was ordered the wrong size! CJ had to start all over . The right size windows were ordered and installed and look really good. I would definitely use them again.
