He is the most polite, unorganized contractor I have met. Tim is a likeable guy because he is meticulously clean and he is very polite. I'd have a beer with him or enjoy being his neighbor. I would not recommend him as a contractor because I have very little respect for him as a professional. He is extremely unorganized, and also seemed to lack basic working knowledge of the project he was doing, which led to several big mistakes.
Some examples include:
He misordered/misjudged the size of the pantry and we had to offer the suggestion on how to "jerry-rig" it so the mistake could be hidden and so it would fit in the designated space.
He wanted to place our range against the bar, which in itself is very oddly placed and a burn hazard for anyone sitting at the bar. The other issue with this is that there was drop down ceiling above the bar and therefore no space for a hood for ventilation. His suggestion was to install a bathroom vent in the ceiling or go without ventilation altogether. We had him run the electric to the wall opposite the bar and install the range there with an over-the-range microwave for ventilation instead.
He also installed the bar about 8 inches higher than the industry standard for a high-top bar. He did this because he did not want to turn the existing outlets sideways. We had to have him come and lower it (at our expense) because it would have cost more to make custom barstools and looked ridiculous. When he did the repair job, he estimated 3 hours of work. He showed up for 20 minutes the first day and then left. We lived with an empty half wall for an additional two weeks before he completed the repair.
He misjudged the height of the cabinets necessary. He didn't install the crown molding above the cabinets (that we ordered and paid for) because he ordered cabinets that were too tall. He decided to install the cabinets without crown molding and never discussed it with us until I noticed the missing crown molding post-installation.
He said the project would take two weeks and instead it took a month. Once the primary work was done, it was extremely difficult to get him to come back for finishing details. For weeks he promised he "would be in the next day" and would not show and not answer his phone for several days.
We are not experts in kitchen remodeling. We hired him to be the expert, but felt we had to watch him constantly to avoid more mistakes. His hourly rate would have been fair if he had done what he said he would do in the time he said he would do it. We were on a budget, but in the long run, we saved no time or money. It would have been worth going with someone else who had better knowledge and who was a better manager of time because like most contractors, Tim bills by the hour.
Tim's services would be best-used as a basic handyman (and not a remodeler, which is how he advertises himself) doing smaller projects, if you can get him to stick around for the day and do it all at once.
