ADE Construction (Ft. Lauderdale) failed to live up to its obligations under our signed contract, even though it was quick to take our money. The problems we have experienced are very similar to those of the two other parties who have recently filed complaints against ADE with the Better Business Bureau of South Florida: 1. Failure to work in a timely manner. 2. Refusal to adhere to deadlines specified in contract. 3. Failure to provide a work plan and schedule of activities. 4. Failure to provide workers in a logically consistent manner. 5. Failure to communicate with us. 6. Abrupt and complete termination of work and cancellation of contract before the first of our two projects was completed. 7. Shoddy work in some instances. 8. Refusal to return monies paid for work never completed. 9. Misrepresentation. On September 22, 2013, we signed a contract with ADE for the total remodeling of the two bathrooms in our home. We were very clear and emphatic about the timing and deadlines for the two projects. ADE told us that the first project would take 10 days and the second would require four weeks. Our contract contains specific dates for the completion of ADE's work. The first and smaller project, the 6’x10’ guest bathroom, valued by ADE at $7100.00, was to be completed by November 22, 2013, in time for our Thanksgiving company's arrival from Boston. The second project, the master bath remodeling, valued by ADE at $11,000.00, was to be completed by December 23, 2013, in time for our Christmas company's arrival from Atlanta. We hired ADE because it promised to meet our deadlines and because it claimed to be on Angie’s List. However, ADE did not tell us that it is a different company called ADE Construction (Miami Lakes) that is a paying member of Angie’s List. This was only the first of many misrepresentations. Pursuant to our contract, we paid ADE a down payment of $9050.00 on September 22, 2013 and a progress payment of $2262.00 on November 20, 2013. As we gave that second check to the project manager, he promised that he was putting all hands on deck to complete the guest bathroom remodeling in time for the arrival of our Thanksgiving company. He did not do so. The job was not completed on time. On December 18, 2013, the project manager demanded an additional $3500.00 in recognition of ADE's completion of the guest bathroom project. This was particularly galling as that project would obviously require several more days of coordinated work by the tile man, the plumber, the electrician, the carpenters and a general laborer. We refused to write another check to ADE when we had already paid $11,312.00 and ADE had not even completed the $7100.00 project. The project manager abruptly pulled all employees off the job. They simply packed up their tools and left, leaving us high and dry. ADE had not even finished the first and smaller project, which was almost one month behind schedule. Nor had it even begun the second project, which was to be completed just five days hence. As for neatness and quality of workmanship, we also give ADE some failing grades. For starters, ADE had to file twice for the building permits because it used the wrong forms on the first application. This contributed to lost time and raises questions about the competency of ADE's staff. Second, despite ADE's assurances that its workers would go to great lengths to prevent unnecessary inconvenience and messes, we ourselves had to clean up considerable dust, film and glass after the demolition of the guest bathroom because the workman neither sealed off the work area as he was supposed to nor swept up all of the shower door that he broke in our driveway. Even though ADE promised us that someone would come out to take care of that man’s mess, no one ever did so. Subsequently, one of the three different tile men sent out by ADE washed his equipment on the sidewalk leading to our front door and left a mess that has stained our pavers. Finally, the day that the project manager abruptly pulled all workers off our project, they left without cleaning up the mess they had made near our pool. These acts are completely unprofessional and unacceptable. ADE's failure to meet the contract deadlines has caused us great stress, disappointment and inconvenience. After several weeks of never knowing whether someone would show up to work or which task would be completed at what time, we began phoning ADE’s office each morning to find out what was scheduled for the day. We also asked the project manager to provide us with a punch list of tasks and a schedule for completing the guest bathroom project. He refused to do so, saying, “We do not keep records.” ADE’s failure to meet its contractual obligations has also caused us unexpected expenses. Because we had no guest bathroom due to ADE's failure to begin and continue work in a timely manner, we were forced to put our Thanksgiving company up in a hotel. (Our seven Thanksgiving dinner guests were also forced to walk through our bedroom to use the master bathroom since there was no guest bathroom facility.) And because we still had no guest bathroom by late December, our Christmas company left town after one night in a hotel rather than staying for one week as planned. Our holidays were thrown into turmoil due to ADE's failure to perform under the contract. Finally, we have had to hire and pay a new contractor to complete ADE's unfinished work on the guest bathroom. We have paid ADE $11,312.00 and ADE has not even completed the $7100.00 guest bathroom project. We have requested a refund of our overpayment but ADE has refused. ADE has offered to return to finish the first project, but only if we first pay an additional $3500.00, an amount not even required by our contract. We have no reason to believe that ADE would perform in a timely or appropriate manner. ADE has already ruined our Thanksgiving and Christmas. After all we have been through with these thoroughly incompetent people, we are reluctant to begin the New Year with the constant stress and strain of trying to get them to perform their work under the contract. There are many other aspects of ADE's behavior that we found objectionable or in conflict with our written contract. In the interest of brevity, however, suffice it to say that we have not received services that add up to the monies we have paid and thus we want a partial refund, which ADE has refused.
