The contract sum was $9,900 (excluding permit fees, etc) and I paid them $4,950 on July 17th 2013 as 50% down payment. I did not hear from them for a month. I called on August 17th 2013 and I was told that they were still working on the plans for the required permits. According to the City records, they submitted the plans a day later on August 18th. Florida law requires that contractors taking more than a 10% deposit for a project must make an application for permit a within 30 days and they were just barely on time.
I continued monitoring the plan approval and noticed that on 28th August, the city found problems with the plans and asked ADE construction for a resubmit. ADE construction did not submit new plans until 18th September, two months after I had paid them. As soon as the plans were approved on 1st October, I paid the required permit fees as instructed by ADE Construction of $597.58 to the city on 2nd October. I then called ADE Construction and agreed on a start date of October 28th at 8am, with a turn around time of 2-3 weeks. I took a few hours off work on the 28th and waited. The workman did not show up till well after 12pm. In the course of demolishing the bathroom, he did not turn off the mains water supply and caused a flood. The ceilings on the ground floor (the master bathroom is on the second floor) were damaged from the flood.
After the initial 3 weeks, during which the workers only showed up a hand full of times, I could not guarantee that there would be someone in the house from 8am when they were supposed to start work (but never did), so I asked that the project manager kindly reschedule so that his men come from 12 noon. He refused and work on my bathroom slowed to almost nothing.
In November, I paid a further $3500 to ADE Construction after the project manager threatened to walk off the project if I did not pay immediately after the first set of inspections were performed by the city officials. Even after paying this, there was no improvement in their attitude to the project. Every day, I had to call the project manager to find out if and when his men could show up to work on my bathroom. Frustrated, I took my case to the BBB (which for some strange reason has given them an A+ rating) and insisted on a time line and an agreed upon end-of-work date for the project. ADE Construction failed to provide a date.
As time went on, it became obvious that the company was having difficulty meeting its financial obligations to the project. I had pay for fixtures that were hitherto part of the contract, just to speed things up, with the understanding that the sums spent would be deducted from what was left of the balance owed. I even had to pay for the shower enclosure. At a point, I found out that the company had added 5% of the agreed project sum to the invoice as "miscellaneous" AFTER I had signed the contract with them. Of course I protested and it was taken off. I hate to think of the number of people who would have paid this ridiculous extra charge by not thoroughly examining their invoice.
Anyway, like I said, its now over, thankfully. The quality of work does not reflect the amount of money I spent (for instance, I can already see problems with the grouting), but I am just glad to be rid of them. It may sound silly, but I will now take my time to bring my newly remodeled bathroom to par! If you think these are the ramblings of just one hard-to-please customer, have a look at the complaints against them in the past year alone, on the BBB website.
Work finally did begin after two months after repeated calls to the office. Communication has been all one sided. I have to call or text every morning to see if someone is going to show up. Workman have all been very unhappy with the conditions they have to work for in the company. They complain about each others work having to fix what others before them have completed. They came unprepared and often used my tools. I had to clean up after each day they came.
It is now 41/2 months later and my two bathrooms are not complete. I was told by the sales person that the job was only going to take 4 weeks. Again, it is now 41/2 months.
I could go on and on but I think you get the picture.
Stay away from this company.
UPDATE: This is an update from my comments on November 25, 2013. The project finally ended on January 15, 2014. Thank God it is finally over. The contract to remodel two bathrooms began with the co-owner, John lying to me. I gave him a check and asked him to hold it for a day until I was able to transfer some funds into that account. He said no problem. Well, he left my house went to the bank cashed the check and it bounced. He called the next morning very upset that the check had bounced. I told him I wanted the $35.00 fee and an apology. He once again said no problem. Now that the project is finally over neither happened. The project, I was told, would be completed in 6 to 8 weeks, well it took 6 months. After giving them a poor rating they wanted to give me $250.00, which I refused, to remove the rating. I did remove the rating because they threatened to stop all work. I wonder what they will try now with this new rating? The workers, when and if they showed up, were incompetent. I have never seen a company with so much staff turnover. They would come unprepared having to use many of my tools. They were sloppy and never cleaned up. The vanities, granite, tile, etc. are of very low quality. Please stay as far away from this company as possible.
