My association had a bad experience with Tilton Bernstein, especially over the past year or two. The company has earned a particularly poor reputation in an industry known for mediocre service. I can't describe the scope of our frustrations effectively in this space, so I'm summarizing a few noteworthy problems we encountered. (1) Tilton Bernstein failed to maintain proper licensing paperwork for our association and its rental unit and took nearly a year in one instance to resolve the problem, causing us to lose thousands of dollars in rental income. (2) Tilton Bernstein received and agreed to a repair contract on our behalf without authorization and never informed the association, committing us to an unreasonable price for the repairs. (3) Tilton Bernstein proved uncooperative and ineffective at obtaining prompt quotes for a replacement water heater when our existing unit failed. The company seemed more interested in maintaining its relationships with its vendors than in helping us to address an emergency, and our board of directors essentially managed the process themselves. Our property managers at Tilton Bernstein never apologized for these problems and argued instead in each case that our association actually was at fault. The staff frequently became defensive, unprofessional, or even hostile in conversations and correspondence with our directors. Tilton Bernstein seldom addressed even minor issues promptly, and routine plumbing or cleaning projects took months to complete in some cases. This review could continue, but I think the foregoing gives an accurate and representative view of our association's experience and reason for ending our relationship with Tilton Bernstein.
Description of Work: Tilton Bernstein managed my midsize housing association for more than ten years. We worked with multiple property managers during our time with them, most recently Richard Bernstein, one of the owners. The company oversaw our association's finances, licensing, collections, physical maintenance, and related operations.
