The craftsmanship and professionalism by Gove Restoration far exceeded my expectations. We had received quotes from several local contractors and we chose Gove Restoration over the rest. Our decision was not based on price as the Gove quote was higher. However, Matt Gove gave us a very detailed estimate showing the scope of work required and it was clear that they pay attention to every detail. With work underway, we were given daily updates on the progress. Unlike previous contractors we used, the Gove team showed up promptly at 8 am and went straight to work. At the end of the day they cleaned up the mess and job site was left spotless. The restoration required the replacement of one of the posts due to rot. However, they were unable to find a match and ended up replacing both posts with a similar style to the old ones at no extra cost. Our porch is now complete and looks fantastic. We are extremely happy with our decision to use Gove Restoration..
Description of Work: Complete restoration of front porch.
We hired Gove Restoration because we own an older home, and knew that the Goves had done historical restoration work in Old Wethersfield, plus, friends there had recommended them. After talking to Matt Gove, I became convinced that the Goves were the right ones for the job because they would be meticulous about preserving the period style and materials to the extent possible, and they would also be scrupulous about making sure all the work was up to code. Matt and Adam Gove were extremely conscientious about supervising and doing the work personally, keeping us informed as to what they were doing, and alerting us to any potential problems that might crop up. It was difficult to coordinate the work of all the subcontractors especially since their respective parts of the job had to be done in a certain order. All of the work was done with admirable precision and care. The plumber was especially good, maybe the best I have ever seen. I especially liked that there was no swearing, no foul talk, no loud radios, no barechested sweaty guys. The entire crew was polite and professional. In fact, I had to spend many days at home preparing lessons and correcting papers, and the work never interfered with my own work, though with just about any other contractor, it would have been a major distraction. Gove Restoration is "the civilized contractor." Matt was ingenious about finding parts and fixtures that would preserve the period style, such as door knobs, handles, or stops, and molding salvaged from what had been dismantled. I was particularly impressed that when the job was done, and I had trouble with the dryer not venting, Matt came over personally to take a look, even though it was unlikely that his part of the work was at fault; rather, it was almost certainly a problem with the appliance itself, which had been modified by service providers from the department store that sold us the dryer so that it would vent out the side instead of the back. Indeed it was the dryer, but Matt found the problem and showed me how to fix it, even though the appliance itself was not his responsibility, and furthermore he charged me nothing for the visit. It is true that Gove Restoration costs a bit more, but in the long run, you will probably save money because the work will not have to be done again, as is often the case with mediocre contractors who are, moreover, often careless about making sure their work is up to code, causing problems later on. But Matt was great working with the city inspector, and kept him informed the entire time, so that the final inspection went off without a hitch. The new room is so beautifully done, and so much in conformity with the historical style of the house, that I have trouble remembering what it looked like before the renovation. It is true that the work ended up costing more than originally estimated, but that was because we ourselves made changes three times to the original order, asking additional work to be done. That, and some special circumstances such as delays in delivery of the custom-made double doors on which all the other work depended, did cause the job to take longer than anticipated, but I will gladly trade a few delays to get work done as splendidly as they did it. The Goves truly take pride in the quality of the work they do, and are impatient with sloppy craftsmanship. It is not just carpentry, but art!
Description of Work: The job we hired Gove Restoration to perform was complicated. We asked them to knock down the wall between the pantry and mud room/half bath to make one large combined utility room and half bath, and in so doing replace the two separate doors leading into the kitchen with one wide double door, which had to be custom-made. This made for a more spacious kitchen space that could be expanded into the utility room when the double doors were opened. They had to move the toilet, sink, and bathroom vanity/cabinet, lay down a new wood floor in the expanded room, sand and finish it, and then sand and finish the adjoining kitchen floor to make them uniform. The washer and dryer outlets had to be moved from an outer to an inner wall, and the outlet for the dryer vent moved. Finally, the electric subpanel in the mud room had to be moved downstairs to the basement, and new light fixtures installed. The Goves had to coordinate the work of several subcontractors, someone to install drywall, a plumber, an electrician, a carpenter to make the double doors, and someone to sand and finish the hardwood floors. The plumbing was especially complicated because shifts in the positions of the plumbing fixtures required the pipes to be routed around the pipe running upstairs from the oil tank in the basement to the ground floor. New molding had to be installed in the new room, and the new utility/half-bath as well as the entire kitchen repainted.

Their customer service is much better than the other nine contractors. They were the only ones that are professional and got back to me to give the estimates. I am very happy. They seem to know what they were doing. They've been great.
Description of Work: Gove Restoration Inc. gave me an estimate for my structural issue. He recommended an engineer whereas other contractor just took their best guess. He provided a plan to secure the beam and ceiling of the living, kitchen and dining room.

I've used Gove Restoration for multiple big renovation projects over the last few years and as usual my kitchen renovation project was completed smoothly - within the projected construction timeframe and budget, was an overall positive experience for me and I love the end result. I've found Adam Gove and his team to be reliable, responsive (Adam always returns phone calls / e-mails on a timely basis), make great suggestions (including coming up with the idea of a pennisula which made the space much more usable for me), pleasant to have around and they do quality work. The Gove team and their sub-contractors show up when they say they will, clean up at the end of each day and keep me informed along the way. Adam also handlled timing issues and other installation problems caused by the cabinet maker I hired separately, making sure the end result was what I wanted. I would highly recommend Gove Restoration.
Description of Work: Renovation of kitchen, dining room and mudroom which included gutting kitchen, removing wall between kitchen/dining room, moving doorway/installing new door, new flooring, wiring and plumbing (including adding a new zone for heating in kitchen) and painting all three rooms. Coordinated workflows with cabinet maker I hired separately.
Gove Restoration went above and beyond my expectations. They understand and appreciate the beauty of an older home, like mine and will work with the homeowner. I am always impressed by their meticulous work. There was so much prep work to do prior to the painting and staining of the den, the stairs, the stairway, the upstairs bathroom and the powder room. And when there were issues, as there always are during a renovation, they figure out a reasonable solution. Gove Restoration is a quality firm and they have earned their "A" Rating. I highly recommend them!
Description of Work: Gove Restoration removed the wallpaper and glue from the den and powder room. They filled the cracks and prepared all walls and ceilings for paint. This included skimming, spackling, and sanding all surfaces multiple times. All imperfections were repaired. In addition to repairing, priming and painting they painstakingly removed all the old varnish, by hand, on the first floor stairway. This included the handrail, risers and stringer. Everything was sanded and repaired before applying the new stain. Repairs were also made to the risers before priming and painting. So much was done...the windows in the upstairs bathroom were stripped, sanded, primed and painted. The bathroom door was restored to it's original natural state--the wood was stripped, sanded and stained to perfection. The 1st floor powder room required a massive amount of work too.

From the start, Matt Gove was professional, detailed and organized. Going into the project, we had an excellent idea of what had to be done, the obstacles we might experience and the cost. There were some difficulties in applying for variances from the state, and Matt handled every aspect of the work and came up with some creative solutions for the obstacles we encountered. He coordinated every aspect of the work with the sub contractors, the electrician, HVAC company and the carpeting company. When the start date had to be delayed, Matt gave us a courtesy discount on the price of the project. I would highly recommend Gove Restoration for anyone undertaking a home re-modeling project.

It was an Angie's List Big Deal that I purchased. He was magnificent and wonderful. It was the best I've ever had any do. The man who came out was very professional. He came to the door first and not only did he clean them, he wasn't noisy like the last group I had. He told me a few areas where he had to re-screw some of the gutters in and level something off. He was very professional and very, very good. They were awesome all the way around. I would absolutely use them again.
Description of Work: I used Gove Restoration for gutter cleaning.
It went very well. Gove Restoration is always interested in making sure the job is done right. His contractors have performed exceptionally well, they go right to work and do not take lengthy breaks. Both Adam Gove and the people he works with take the time to explain exactly what needs to be done, and why. There s never any worry for costs. Adam gove inspected a room that I thought would need replacing and would be very expensive. He said it was fine, and that is why I always call Gove Restoration for any job. Honesty, attendtion to detail, and Adam's random checks to make sure work is going according to plan. In adding a door there was an error in measurement which could havve been passed on to me, Gove Restoration stuck to the quote as they always have. If you want a quick cheap job, call someone else. Gove Restoration rightly takes pride in their work and wont cut corners. He knows exactly what needs to be done and handles it. I have used Gove Restoraion a number of times. I have never been disappointed, never had a mess left, and had only friendly and polite contractors at my home. I would call no one else and strngly recomend their service.

It went really well and the quoted price was $1,000. The estimator was very knowledgeable about his trade and they know what they are doing. No job is too small for them; they will do anything; which is good.
Description of Work: I got an estimate from Gove Restoration to hang and paint my door.
This was the third project Adam and Matt Gove worked on for me and, as with the other two projects, this was a positive experience for me. The new bathroom looks great - better than I hoped it would. The Goves are very responsive (phone calls and e-mails are always returned), show up when they say they will, keep me informed along the way, make great suggestions for alternative ways of doing things, clean-up each day, are nice to work with and do great work. They keep me stress free during projects and I also feel comfortable having them in my home when I can't be there.
Description of Work: Half-bathroom renovated and converted into full bathroom. Included: gutting original room, plumbing (including new plumbing to add stall shower to room), lighting, vent fan, sheetrocking, tiling floor / new shower, glass shower doors, new vanity and fixtures, custom trim work and painting (including adjoining hallway).
I couldn't be happier! The repairs and painting were done with perfection and detail. They had to do additional repairs but handled them all with ease. Also, I had a time constraint due to the holidays, and they finished a day early! I've worked with the Gove family before and would highly recommend them! Absolutely outstanding...
Description of Work: Repair and paint the upstair's bedrooms-- including walls, ceilings, molding, etc.

Matt Gove worked with us to meet our particular needs and goals for improving the attic ventilation in our home. The crew was prompt, clean, and diligent. We appreciated their willingness to take on an unusual project and see it through. They left us with some spare materials that helped us finish off another project we were doing ourselves. It was our second experience with them and both have been positive. A genuine, professional, and straight forward family business. We hope to use them for future work.
Description of Work: Installed attic ventilation (intake and exhaust) in 2 story cape including installing powered exhaust ventilator, removing existing whole house fan, installing 2 gable end vents, install trim, seal openings and paint all work areas.

I have nothing but high praise for Adam Gove and his team at Gove Restoration. From the beginning, his professionalism and attention to detail stood out. We started the proposal process in July of last year and after a few revisions finalized the project in September. Their schedule was pretty full, so work did not begin until February. It was well well worth the wait. We live in an older home it was important for the end result to look like it has always been there. And, it does. The new floor is such an improvement over our old linoleum. Being able to walk from the kitchen to the living room without having to go around the whole house really makes life easier. There were a couple miscommunications along the way, which is to be expected. However, they were handled well by Adam and to our satisfaction. They were clean, responsive and the quality of their work exceeded my expectations. I would definitely recommend Gove Restoration to my friends and family. They were a real pleasure to work with. I gave them a 'B' for price only because they were the highest bidder. I think their price was fair given the quality of their work.
Description of Work: Remove wall between kitchen hallway and living room, install new floor in kitchen and hallway, install shoe molding in dining room, living room and hallway.
The Goves were very professional and meticulous in their work, and on time for work every day. They listened to my wishes and made suggestions that worked very well with the style and period (1926) of my home. Although their prices were slightly higher than other contractors, I felt that, due to their excellent reputation, it was worth it. I could not be happier with the renovation that they did. The tile work is unique and beautiful, and the built in shelving, which they suggested, adds to the charm of the room. They also suggested additional lighting, which I love. Adam and Matt kept me informed each step of the way, and called me if they had any questions. (I felt totally comfortable leaving them in my house while I was at work.) They were meticulous, detail-oriented and very pleasant to deal with. I could not be happier with the work they did for me, and would not hesitate to use them again. My bathroom looks like the finest spa!
Description of Work: The Goves totally gutted and renovated my bathroom, installed new walls and fixtures, added radiant flooring, new lighting, a vented fan, built in shelving, tile, shower doors.
This was my first experience working with Gove Restoration and from start to finish it was an extremely positive experience. I've found them to be reliable, responsive (Adam Gove always returned phone calls on a timely basis) and they do quality work. Adam provided a very detailed estimate, which other contractors wouldn't do, and suggested alternative ways of doing things that turned out better than what I had originally requested. During the project the Gove team and their sub-contractors showed up when they said they would, cleaned up at the end of each day and took care to protect my flooring in areas they walked through. While Gove Restoration may be a bit higher in cost than some contractors, I definitely feel I got my money's worth and will call them first for my next project.
Description of Work: Total remodel of walk-out heated basement. Existing basement finishes were gutted and an interior wall was removed. Stud walls were built with vapor barrier/insulaton added to exterior walls, new interior doors were added. A new laundry closet (housing washer/dryer, set-tub) was built, plumbing was re-worked and cabinets/countertop installed. Recessed lighting, new outlets/switches were added. Stairway and railing were re-built. Walls and ceiling were sheetrocked, base molding added, columns trimmed-out, everything was painted and new flooring (carpet/wood laminate) was installed.

He came out and he was very knowledgeable. He was very prompt as far as getting his estimate in. He was concerned about whether I would go with somebody else so he gave me tips for what to look for and what not to. It was just that his price was little high than other estimates that made me not to go with him. He was very professional, seemed to be very caring and I felt that his price could be a little low. He was just a wonderful guy.

We contacted the Gove's to get an estimate for our bathroom remodel. I met with Adam Gove, who was very professional and provided me with a lot of information regarding what we would need for our bathroom remodel. They come highly recommended and I would have loved to use them. Unfortunately, their services were completely out of our budget range and in the end, we decided not to use them. They were prompt in returning phone calls and gave a lot of feedback and insight that I found helpful. Adam was a very straightforward, but kind individual. If you have a good sized budget, definitely look into having the Gove brothers do the work for you.

We have worked with the Goves before (they installed a hardwood floor for us) and they were the only company we would go to for further work. Matt came and gave us an estimate for painting and restoration of the garage. His crew came to do the scraping and prep work, Matt figured out the solution to the structural problems and fixed those, and the crew completed the priming and painting. Always punctual, polite, tidy and beautiful attention to detail.
Description of Work: Our garage (built in 1925) needed some structural repair, a window replaced and a thorough scraping and painting. Matt Gove worked with us on how to fix the structural elements and completed that carpentry work, and the Gove painting crew did a great job on painting.

I had a small exterior project that I thought required a professional to complete because the height and location were a bit beyond my comfort zone. I searched for Handymen and found many companies large and small. As I started calling I found very few would even return a call and even fewer who would consider the work. Once I contacted Gove I received a return phone call within hours indicating they were able to consider the project and help me out. I subsequently determined a safe way to complete the work myself. I then received a follow up phone call from Gove to ensure my needs were fulfilled as I had been difficult to reach and had not taken the time to follow up with them. In explaining the situation and discussing the project, I found Mr. Gove to be a professional and responsive. He was also able to consult with me briefly on a future planned project and based on this discussion it became clear to me that the company philosophy is clearly to do the job the right way. I am excited that Angie’s List helped me to find a resource I can trust for large and small jobs in the future. I look forward to contacting them again for my future needs. I would definitely recommend contacting this company to see what they can do to meet your needs.

Gove Restoration truly knows their stuff! I was blown away how professional this small company is. Honestly, they are everything you could ask for from a contractor. Gove Restoration really made me feel like my project was in good hands.
Description of Work: Provided a professional opinion along with some ideas on my bath remodel.
The work area was draped and sealed off to keep the rest of the house as clean as possible. Also all floors to and from the work area were covered with work cloth each day and cleaned at the end of the day. Carpet was removed, linoleum flooring was removed, then the old tar-covered oak flooring was torn up. Each sub floor board was individually nailed to the floor joists. Tar paper was installed on the subfloor, and new unfinished oak floorboards were installed. Custom shoe molding was installed, as well as oak threshholds. Floor was refinished by outside company under supervision of Gove. Windows were repaired.
Description of Work: Installed unfinished oak floor in one room, with custom made baseboard shoe molding and oak thresholds into adjoining rooms. Repaired window weights in five windows and propped up top sashes in several more. Acted as general contractor for refinishing of new floor (sanding and 3 coats of oil-based polyurethane).
