The basement was done OK with the exception of the carpeting. The installer he used banged up the paint job during his job.
When I vacuumed the stairs for the first time, ( I'm not proud - but it was not until May since I do not use the basement at this time) a loose fiber got sucked into the vacuum and 2 inches of the padding became exposed because the installation was faulty. The carpet just unravelled!!! I requested the name of the installer so I could contact him directly but Peter Fox refused.
I did all of the spackling and repairs to the interior walls to save on expense. I was charged over 3000.00 for painting one coat for three rooms along with a cathedral ceiling.. which would have been OK except the ceiling was never painted. I had to call Peter out on it to get them to paint the ceiling. Also - one coat was not enough - and if I did not insist on a 2nd - Peter Fox would have left it looking like crap.
Being ripped off for the electrical work that his electrician was supposed to do is what pushed me over the edge. His electrician spent about two hours at my property and subcontracted other work out to his friend - whom I don't know - however I was billed two thousand dollars for the installation of 3 basic ceiling fixtures and two bathroom fans.
Pete used substandard wood for the deck, causing many boards to warp and separate from the floor and the railings. He used wood putty extensively which made the railings have unsightly bumps, dark spots and light spots. Every post used next to a gate developed gaping splits down the middle of each one. It was unbelievable. I forwarded Peter photos of the poor workmanship that I had paid top dollar for - but he was not interested. I paid a carpenter almost 500.00 for repairs last summer just so I could stain the rest of the deck.
"This man has Fox Family Home Improvement LLC confused with a different contractor. We did visit his residence and quoted a price. We were told he would get back in touch with us if he chose us to do the job."
As a single woman, I can?t pack and lift many heavy things, so Peter and his team never hesitated to box, lift, move and arrange things - several times in some cases due to painting the floor. He always responded quickly to any questions or problems, coming on the weekend if needed (and it was needed!) to check on things or take care of something. He met my tight schedule even as the work increased, was helpful, reassuring, and totally competent in every way. All of his workers were equally competent and responsible. I never had a questions of leaving them alone in the house to complete their work.
I would use them again without hesitation.
Out of the gate, Pete was responsive and punctual - which after we got started was tough as hurricane Sandy put a delay on my basement, however Pete was constantly available vie text or phone keeping me updated on my basement refinishing which in big scheme of Sandy destruction, was not and should not have been a priority.
Pete and his guys came in and tore down my walls, put up new ones...his electricians tested/tore out dozens of unused wiring/rerouted wires and installed new systems (FANTASTIC ELECTRICIANS!) AND installed state of art home entertainment system w/ surround sound/speakers inside and outside and all kinds of kid/adult friendly electronics synched to one remote. Pete's electricians (AGAIN, FANTASTIC!) rerouted plumbing and put in sump pumps. Then was time for dry walling/painting/flooring/putting on doors/putting in new windows...at times was slower than I'd like, however there was always a reason (generally Sandy backlash) and Pete was always responsive, and at times even showed up himself to get work done.
Finally was time for home entertainment/theatre - I have three elementary school aged kids and am single mom, not entirely knowing what i need now and will in future, and Pete and his electricians were amazing in offering suggestions and making it fit within my budget. Only downside is now all my kids want to do is be in the basement! :)
It needs to be mentioned that Pete, himself, was an amazing resource for ideas on basement - regarding most things as it had to be reconceptualized -- he had great ideas and w/ experience could rattle off pros and cons...
It also needs to be mentioned that when I needed new fence, roof, purchase and rewiring of house to make generator friendly and help w/ garage (non-basement related home issues), Pete not only facilitated communication w/ insurance company (post Sandy) but had professional referrals at his fingertips to help out.
Pete and his crew were a pleasure to work with! We are so psyched about our basement and recommend him and Fox highly!!!
I began to get nervous in the very begining when he told me that there is no need to prime before painting over fresh sheetrock mud. My walls needed a decent amount of repair due mainly to damage that I did when I removed a mirror that was glued to the wall. Pete applied the mud to an area that was roughly 3 feet by 3 feet, along with other misc areas around the room that needed some touchup.
Now, I have been painting myself since I was a kid, anyone will tell you that you need to apply primer to sheetrock mud prior to painting. Pete didnt think so. Ask a pro, do a search on the internet, ask the guys at the paint store, read the instructions on the products being used, they all will tell you that this is the proper way to do it. Petes painter also told me that the area should have been primed. Of course when Pete asked him in front of me he told a different story. The painter was very uncomfortable.
Pete grew very frusterated with me when I questioned anything. Now I admit that I am a perfectionist, I can also be obssessive compulsive about stuff like this. But I am not a wealthy person, I do not want to have to do stuff twice nor can I afford to. I just want it done right.
Pete asked me to let him do the job and said "It will be perfect when its done." He said if I have any problems with the job I should address them at the end and it would be taken care of. But when I pointed out issues at the end he became very frusterated. One of the painters that he had used painted over sheetrock mud after only minimal sanding. When you looked at the wall you could see all of the lumps and bumps, the wall was not smooth at all. Pete was not happy when I objected to this but he did send another painter to fix it, who did a good job of smoothing out the wall.
Now, I know this was not a big job but there was no need for all the drama and attitude. I told Pete in the begining that I didnt want to spend a fortune on this small bathroom but that I was not willing to sacrafice quality. I only inquired about the price once during the job, merely asking for a projection. When Pete told me what he projected the cost to be, I agreed.
Again, I think the work that Pete does himself is good. We could have solved the other issues more easily and smoothly if his attitude was better.
Peter provided an accurate view on when he could start the project. He showed up on time every day and stuck with the project until it was complete (I've worked with other contractors that start the job then disappear for several weeks). Peter was happy to make changes as I suggested (I asked him to round some corners on the deck and I asked him to smooth some joints). Peter told me over and over that he wanted me to be happy with the final product and that he'd change anything that didn't make me happy.
Overall, good quality work. Peter and his guys are polite and professional. I look forward to working with Peter on future projects.
"I am sorry to hear that the member feels that I am unprofessional. I met with the member twice and her insurance adjuster once. She informed me that she hired an unlicensed landscaper to remodel her kitchen, family room, laundry room bathroom and add a walk-up attic. All for only $5,000.00. Upon inspecting the work of this “contractor”, I found the home and the work that he had done was a complete disaster and rendered her house unsafe. A few examples were: when you would turn off a light switch in the family room, the fireplace would turn on; He used a water supply hose to connect the gas pipe to the fireplace; He removed support beams in order to make room for a walk-up attic; all of the supports for 5 window frames were removed and duct taped together on the sides. If someone in the house were to trip and fall against any one of the windows, that person would fall through, out and down 15 feet to the ground… I met at the home with the insurance adjuster and discussed at length with him what needed to be done on the surface and what possible unforeseen complications we would find behind the walls. He and I agreed that he would write up a case estimate and leave it “opened” so that we could at least start the job and continue working through together as the project went along… I have extensive experience with insurance companies/adjusters and have never had an issue. The member contacted me several times looking for my estimate. She said that her insurance company would not move forward without my estimate. Each time I explained to her that for this job in particular it was not possible to give a set price. I would have to start this job on a time and materials contract because of the fact that I had to undo and redo everything her pervious “contractor” had done. Estimates are exactly that, estimates! However, most people will hold you to that price regardless of what unforeseen complications might arise. Most of the time it’s not a big cost differential, however in this house it could have been extremely costly. I felt it would have been irresponsible of me to do that. I asked her to either have her adjuster call me or give me his number so that would could work on it together but she would not do that… I have experienced people who after I have spent countless hours working for them to get a very fair payout for their project, turn around and shop for a cheaper contractor. The member told me that since I would not give her an estimate that she was going to get another contractor. I said “okay” and that was the last time we spoke."
