"Thank you, [Member Name Removed], for taking the time to review us. We appreciate your business and look forward to serving you in the future."
It took, maybe, four hours to do the work and one worker came out. They are excellent. We are a platinum member so we pay so much a year and get a discount from them.
Initital installation - riley's technician incorrectly installed the air vent. The radiator ordered was 25 inches high, replacing one that was 22 inches. Placement is under a double window. The vent placement added another 3 inches ,so it was now definitely above windowsill height. Technician also was not qualified to adjust pipe height and another person had to be called in to assist, which was fine since they did finally install it.
By this time, I'd done enough internet research to know more than I ever wanted to know about steam heating systems. The vent placement initially performed was for hot water radiator systems, not steam. The vent on one pipe steam radiators needs to be placed on the opposite side from the intake pipe, midway down the side of the radiator for it to work efficiently. I also discovered that there were lower radiators available (Riley told me that this was the only size).
Called to tell him the vent placement was incorrect. He couldn't come out for a week because he was on vacation. They did come back the following Monday. I left information on the correct vent placement for Riley since we know that steam heating systems are more a less a thing of the past. He completed ignored it and repositioned the vent on the SAME side as the intake pipe. My husband questioned why it was done this way and again pointed to the documentation. Riley's response was that he was the plumber, knew what he was doing and that's what we were paying him for.
The next morning, I cranked up the heat for about 20 minutes. All the other radiators were rumbling hot. The new one...only 3 of the 14 sections were hot. Another call and conversation, and the owner then indicated that this was easily fixed by turning the radiator around. When I asked why he didn't do this to begin with, he and quot;dancedand quot;. Owner is a very good talker and never answered the question.
At this point, I was so angry that I stopped payment on the 2nd check and told him we were done.
Total cost billed - $2,300 which is really steep after doing my research.
During the initial visit, he inspected the furnace and told us that it was not up to code and that installation of a Hartford Loop should be done. Estimate for that work was $3,200. While all the nonsense was going on with the radiator, we had another estimate for this work, and it was under $500. We then had 2 other plumbers come out, and they both indicated that the current safety valve on the boiler met building code and we didn't have to do anything.
Make sure you get other estimates before hiring. Do your homework. We didn't up front because Riley came recommended.
Oh....and if he tries to talk you into something called Easy Water, make sure you do a website search on that as well.
3/17/12 Update. The radiator moved to the living room was not secured to the incoming pipe. Water and steam escaped from the system. It hasn't been very cold here so the furnace hasn't been running much. Last week the furnace stopped working. There was no water in the boiler causing the cad cell relay switch on the boiler to burn out and had to be replaced for an additional cost of $325. I've changed my rating from a D to an F. I hope this is the last of this fiasco.
