Our tankless hot water heater was working intermittently. We were also intermittently smelling natural gas. We had removed the cover to the hot water heater and attempted to read the codes to see if we could troubleshoot it ourselves, and had removed and cleaned the water filter. But we did not feel like we were equipped to do anything else and needed professional help. We turned off the natural gas to the unit because we were concerned there could be a leak.
We called Kerwin out to fix it. They came out the following day. When the repair person arrived, he was clean and polite, but he didn't seem to really know tankless hot water heaters. He spent a lot of time on his phone, looking stuff up on the internet. He spent about 20 minutes troubleshooting, but did not find anything wrong. (Admittedly, the hot water heater was again working at the time he came). He did not address the smell of natural gas that we reported to him.
We were charged $155 for the service call, and we did not feel like the repair person was fully equipped to deal with our tankless hot water heater, and he didn't even bother to replace the cover to the tankless hot water heater (which was very frustrating to us). I would have also thought he would have more carefully investigated the source of the natural gas smell.
When our hot water heater again stopped working a day later, we called Kerwin to follow-up. We were told they could do some more research to try to figure out the problem. They later agreed to refund the service call, and we were not charged.
"We at Kerwin Plumbing and Heating stand by our work 100% and have been in business in the Broomfield area for over 35 years. We wanted to clarify a few things regarding the review that was posted by the customer. The customer mentioned in the review that the tankless water heater was working when our technician left the site on 11/26. While our tech was onsite the water heater was not presenting any error codes. Error codes are typical when a water heater has a problem. There are many tankless water heater manufacturers and models on the market. While onsite our technician reviewed troubleshooting information and the manufacturers manual from his smart phone ensuring he was running through the manufacturers suggestions for a repair. When a tankless water heater kicks on you will smell a small level of natural gas. Our technician did not smell any natural gas beyond the normal startup. Also the customer noted, they removed the water heater cover. Had our technician removed it he would have reinstalled it or if the customer had mentioned it he also would have reinstalled it. Kerwin Plumbing was not contacted about a continued problem with the water heater until December 2nd. This is a week after our tech had been onsite. This was also several days after the review was posted on Angie's List. If we had known about the continued water heater problem we would have dispatched a technician to correct the issue immediately. However, we were not given the opportunity. Once we heard of the problem on 12/2 the customer was contacted that day to have our service technician back onsite to resolve the problem. The customer then informed us that they had other issues with their gas line and had smelled gas over the weekend. Xcel Energy was contacted to come out and test for a gas leak over the weekend, none was found. Xcel Energy was back onsite 12/2 to replace the homeowners gas regulator outside the home. If there are issues with a gas line regulator it can potentially affect all gas appliances that are connected to the line including the tankless water heater. The customer also informed us on 12/2 that they were having furnace issues as well and that a furnace technician was to be onsite the same day as Xcel Energy. We discussed possible repair options to which the homeowner said he would get back to us once the regulator was fixed and the furnace was addressed. We had not heard back from the customer. We called again12/4 to get a status on the water heater and went over the customers concerns and were told that he had contacted someone else for the water heater repair. We never want an unhappy customer and work very hard to make sure our customers are happy with the service. Kerwin Plumbing has taken action to address the customers concerns and has refunded the $155 service call to the customer."
