This company is dishonest, malicious, lacks integrity, and has ZERO idea of how to provide customer service. Smith Builders is NOT a building company, there are a lead generator that will simply farm out your project to their subcontractor network who provides them the lowest bid. I made the mistake of hiring this sham of a company after they promised they could finish by the time my household belongings would be shipped to my new house. They promised attention to detail and high quality work. FACT: they delivered on NONE of these things AND they didn't even complete all the work they promised to do for my renovation, then threatened to sue me and put a lien on my house if I didn't pay them for an incomplete project as agreed (they will purposely write you a VERY vague contract and statement of work so they can later tell you that the details they promised you in person or on the phone are "out of scope") I hired this company to remodel 75% of my home. I was on a tight 6 week timeline. They hired a subcontractor who would only assign TWO PEOPLE to complete 90% of the work, minus some electrical work, one structural item that required one other helping hand, and some painting. No matter how much they promised they would finish on time, they refused to add extra people to the project and it took them 12 WEEKS to complete, but this isn't just a case of the typical "it always takes longer" contractor story. Keep reading... They give you a so-called "project manager". These are not project managers; they have no PM skills, do not write any of your design or work details down, and have no concept of how to manage a renovation. They leave all of that responsibility to their subcontractor but do their best to come to your house periodically to make empty promises and tell you things they believe you want to hear. Their "project managers" are nothing but salespeople that begin blaming the delays on YOU, the customer, not on the fact that their workers install the wrong things, don't know how to lay tile, rebuild your shower incorrectly based on what you asked, or that there is one or two people at a time trying to complete a massive renovation for you. We had to fire their first "PM" Lia (Liora) Green because she was incapable of managing our project effectively. She couldn't remember any detail that we requested, never wrote anything down, tried to convince me that terrible tile jobs were the fault of the TILE itself, and blamed me for "making changes" when work that was done was subpar and I insisted it be done with higher quality and attention to detail, like she initially promised. Oh, she also looked at the architectural plans before we began our work and told us that the opening we wanted to expand between our kitchen and living room was not load-bearing; well, IT WAS, and so we had to remove work scope from the rest of the project to cover the cost because Lia and Smith Builders would not take responsibility for Lia's uninformed mistake. Lia was replaced by Sean, who also came in with big promises and added absolutely ZERO value. He, along with his ridiculously unethical and malicious boss David, inserted themselves to try to "fix" our project quality and delay issues on July 1, days AFTER the project was supposed to be done. They both made large overtures and promises for my fiance and I to "not worry", and that the remaining work would be done correctly and within two weeks. Neither of those were true, and they finally "finished" the job in late August, but refused to complete multiple electrical projects that we detailed at the beginning and hired them to do. This delay cost my fiance and I money as we had to extend our stay elsewhere, then cost us our quality of life in the home for an entire month as we lived in the house that was basically a construction site, which the workers left dirty on a daily basis. Sean would also come to my home and pressure me to make work progress payments during the project despite the associated work milestones not yet being complete. In case you don't know, THIS PRACTICE IS ILLEGAL for a contractor to do. I cancelled a check on them for this reason, until the work milestones were complete. As for their work, they would lay the wrong tile, lay it incorrectly and have to redo it (backsplashes and multiple wall tiles) at my expense, they broke one of my vanity sinks trying to install it, they flooded out my kitchen cabinet and hardwood floor then tried to tell me "it was like that when we started" (hint, it wasn't), they installed the wrong kitchen cabinet hardware TWICE, causing extensive rework of painting and wood-patching the cabinets (increasing their delay, which they found ways to try to blame me for), they refused to install ceiling fans and dimmer switches that I had detailed to them when they initially scoped the project because Lia "didn't make an arrangement" with the subcontractor to do so (she forgot, and she didn't keep any records of our multiple walkthroughs) but the largest electrical issue that we wanted them to fix from day one, was our dimming lights issue throughout the house. Smith Builders flat out REFUSED to do this work and said it was out of scope, despite both of their worthless "project managers" assuring me that the work would be a "simple fix" because we have 200Amp electrical service coming into our home. The last bit of audacity came from the regional manager, or whatever he's supposed to be, David. He continued the company's trend of giving me more empty promises, but outdid everyone else with his callous rudeness. He told my fiance who was trying to get him to hurry up and finish the job that SHE was the problem. When I asked him why he was refusing to complete work that both of his salespeople promised me at the beginning and THROUGHOUT our project, he said verbatim "This is the explanation I have for you. The next time I'll explain it on my lawsuit". Then he proceeded to threaten to file a lien on my house for not paying them on the day after they deemed they were "finished", which was TWO MONTHS late and incomplete. These are the facts of our nightmare with this company. Would you hire them after reading how they treat their customers?
