"As there are multiple issues raised, I have addressed each one individually, please see my ~~responses~~ A year ago, I hired him to repair some damage from another contractor. One of the things he was supposed to repair was a motion light in my bathroom that would turn off while I was in the shower. ~~I replaced a defective occupancy sensor light switch. It was an item the inspector wanted repaired. The new switch worked fine. I explained and showed Mrs. [Member Name Removed] how to change the timer if she wanted~~ Also, the water pressure wasn't right in the shower. ~~The other contractor damaged the shower mixing valve~~ He told me to get a part from Home Depot to fix it. I had to buy a whole set rather than just a part like he said. ~~I said that she can order a new part from Home Depot as that is where she originally purchased the valve. She did not want to wait and decided to just buy another valve assembly~~ He also was supposed to fix the front door that let air and bugs in. It is only about half fixed. He said to just shut the door really hard. ~~The other contractor installed an interior door as her entrance door. Rather than installing a new door (not in her budget), I added weather stripping. I explained that until the weather stripping "breaks in" she would need to shut the door a little harder than normal~~ I have a support beam that has rotted, and the kitchen and bathroom ventilation were not properly done before, and Jake was going to fix that. Jake and I agreed that we were waiting for scaffolding and a permit from the city to fix the beam and the ventilation. Price is what I have paid so far, but he has charged me over $800 to open the wall to try and get to the beam in the wall. Jake opened up the wall, and an engineer later told me it wasn't needed. ~~The house overhangs a steep cliff. A steel "I" beam that goes from the foundation to a stilt support has rusted away from the salt air. It was wrapped in stucco which hid the damage. I repelled down the cliff to under the house to remove the stucco covering. Mrs. [Member Name Removed] had a "friend" who claimed to be an engineer say it was not necessary to remove the stucco to expose the damage. This was incorrect and dangerous advice and I told her to seek the advice of a licensed engineer, and gave her several references. She never pursued them. In regards to the $800, that was my initial estimate. However it didn't take as long as expected and I only billed her for $650.~~ He said he was licensed for this work and then told me he wasn't and could not do it. ~~ I did say I could open up the stucco and evaluate the issue for her. I never said that I could do engineering work. That requires a class "A" license, I have a class "B". I explained that a structural engineer will have an engineering contractor available.~~ ~~In conclusion, I was not scheduled to go back until the scaffolding (which she was arranging thru her painter) was up, which never happened. I was asked to go back several times, but again, the scaffolding was not up. I was only paid for work that I actually did and that she pre-approved in writing. In working with Angie's List to resolve her concerns, I offered to go back and and correct any issues that were a direct result of my work and craftsmanship at no cost. However any additional work would be at my normal rates. She respectfully declined.~~"
We found Jake. to be a true professional in his dealings with us. He cleaned up after completion of work, his service costs where reasonable and we told him we will be calling him in the near future for other tasks needing completion.
We were pleased with the results of the jobs Jake completed. He charges a fair price. The thing we like about Jake is the fact that he has experience and is knowledgeable about many household and construction issues. He has good ideas and takes the time to communicate about his ideas, solutions and project details. He knows how to fix things, what parts are needed and where to purchase the parts. He is careful in the execution of his work. Jake has an assistant who helps him named Cliff. Both are honest, trustworthy, friendly, polite and pleasant to work with. We will definitely by using Jake's services again when needed.
"I gave a quote of $160 over the phone, based upon a verbal description of the project, sight unseen. When I completed the work, I adjusted the cost (based upon the actual work preformed, and without being asked) down to $84.00 and that is what I Invoiced her for. I try to be fair in my billing and would rather reduce a cost rather than increase it."
