Sun Coast appeared to be a trustworthy and experienced contractor on paper. We hired them to perform exterior improvements including windows, minor siding, plaster, minor carpentry work, and coating. Our estimate process was lengthy and overwhelming, red flags were ignored by me and my husband, we regretfully signed a contract. Project started 4 months after signing, we had to contact them consistently for updates on a start date. Communication was poor from the beginning. We started feeling like they thought our house wasn't worth their time or quality. The crews were messy and we came home multiple times to debris everywhere in our yard. When we brought this up to Sun Coast, we were told our yard wasn't nice to begin with and when we asked for a pile of trash to be cleaned up in our front yard we were told they didnt want to make daily trips...the pile was from demo of old windows with broken glass left in our yard after removal The plaster and paint crews consistently cleaned their tools in our yard with obvious signs of paint and plaster cleanout in our soil. A portion of the contract scope wasn't completed in sequence so we were given a change order which was not equal to the cost of the work, but we couldn't get an honest answer on the cost because we were denied any detailed cost breakdown, they laughed at us. When we asked for a schedule, we were promised multiple times we'd receive one, but never got a schedule or timeline or follow through on promises to arrive on time, be done on time, or order materials on time. Time and time again deadlines lapsed and finish dates passed with no update or communication on new dates or problems. It was obvious to us we were taken and felt taken advantage of. We signed off on work we never should have, but we were bullied by Sun Coast and their sub. Promise after promise not met. We do not recommend Sun Coast.

NOT HAPPPY. I (female) actually NEED my stucco redone and termite damage repaired,. When the solicitor came by specifically for that type of work, I ended up scheduling an estimate. The next day, the “estimator” came on time, but abruptly left after only after a partial look at the front perimeter (1/4) of house and no estimate. Even though I'm the sole home owner, decision maker, and pay for the work (which I explained), he didn't want to talk to me without "my man" (who doesn't have the time to interview contractors). As he was leaving, he said he would send an estimate based on the sq footage of the property address, but it's been over a week and I haven't heard back. I'm a sfw engineer and have been working with contractors “all by myself” for over 20 years (roof, solar panels, full kitchen remodel, etc.) . Per other bad reviews on other review sites, I guess it's for the best.

It was great! They were professional, on time, I thought the price was a little high but fair because they were high quality windows that were double pane. I would recommend this company to others.
Description of Work: They put in 4 brand new windows.

Sun Coast salesmen were trolling the neighborhood, canvassing for work. I was watering my front-yard plants (more on that later). The salesman was very aggressive and pushy to the point of rudeness. He claimed our roof looked "worn" even though he couldn't really see any of it from the street. I tried to tell him we only hire businesses after vetting on Angie's List, not from door-to-door cold calls, but he talked right through me and tried to schedule me for an appointment, even though I'd just said no! I'm always wary of companies that do this kind of door-to-door stuff, and I told the guy this - if they have to go out and walk the street to drum up business, there's something wrong. He became extremely angry and huffy, said his company was among the "top 500" remodelers (yeah, right) and told me that at least HE wasn't "wasting water and watering the rocks". (I've mulched my seldom-watered native plants with large rocks.) He then marched angrily down the street. Zero professionalism at all. After this contact, I wouldn't hire this company to remodel a birdbath!

He was professional and very hands on. He was at the job site all the time. He went with me to pick out the tiles for my pool and my pavers in my backyard and made sure that it’s what I liked, what I wanted, and it was under my budget. He helped me with the design of the pavers and the paving people that he has are just phenomenal. He also put up the glass and metal-framed railing on my deck in my backyard instead of stripy pieces of wood, which I would never thought of.
Description of Work: I have used Sun Coast Remodelers. He painted our house, removed the deck, and rebuilt a new deck in a lot better configuration. He also took out all of my patio and my patio cover and put in pavers.

The overall look is GREAT. The old multi layered roof was removed, sections of plywood that were bad were replaced, the new roof looks good with all straight lines etc. My recommendation to them, after the fact, was they need to better prep their work. The inside of my attic has building material all over the insulation and the inside of my garage has little pieces of asphalt shingles all over and inside everything. I had a lot of open boxes and other containers that now have debris all over and inside. I have never had my roof replaced before, so did not have an idea of what to expect. This is why I hire "licensed experts".

The prep and painting were excellent. They were prompt every day and very courteous. They were very neat and efficient. The young man that came to our home for the estimate, John Leonard, was extremely nice and polite. Jon Horvat, the lead painter was the best!! At the completion of the work, the area was cleaned completely. I would definitely recommend them and would use them in the future.
Description of Work: They painted the front and back of our house.

Sun Coast Remodelers, on Chesapeake Drive in San Diego, cold called us trying to drum up business. We were interested, as we needed to make a functional remodel of a bathroom for wheelchair accessibility. As usual, we always get three quotes. The designer/salesperson came, spoke to us, took cursory measurements, and made an appointment for a few days later. He was running late and called to let us know. That was fine, understandable. The difficulty I have with this company is with the quality of the initial design work, quote consultation, and particulars in the presentation. The design was sketched in pencil, not detailed, but he did use a straight edge. I was quite surprised that he didn't use a CAD program, which is a basic tool of architectural design. He explained the company works with little overhead. The details did not show plumbing, electrical, windows, venting, and thickness of walls... etc. The sketch, approximately 2and quot;x2and quot;, showed a room layout, which although I liked the layout at first blush and it met the general parameters of our requirements, it had some problems. There were no internal measurements to the sketch and the general measurements lacked specificiy. It was difficult to determine how far apart fixtures and appliances were from each other. As I contemplated his sketch, I realized the distance between the washer and dryer, facing each other as I had suggested as a possibility, were quite a bit farther apart than desired. The distance would cause me to take extra steps. He tried to explain that the distance was only an extra six inches on each side. He didn't seem to comprehend that distance is critical. The sales person from Sun Coast Remodelers compared Sun Coast Remodelers to one competitor, Lars Remodeling and Construction, which is a local award winning, highly professional, but pricey, business we had previously used. (I include the competing company's name for clarity and only because the Sun Coast Remodelers' salesman specifically and repeatedly used them as a comparison.) I had to agree the difference was significant. Unlike Sun Coast Remodelers, their competitor's sales/designer checked our home and took note of all details, including plumbing, pipes, electrical, vents, foundations, elevation... etc. The competitor's designer had multiple layouts, all in great detail, which he said took him little time and changed details on the spot on his laptop. With Sun Coast Remodelers, when I would question a feature of the design, the sales/designer would launch into a defense of how much time he had put into the design and an oral resume of his experience. The Sun Coast designer/salesman repeatedly told us the company had been in business 4 years and previously under another name. When I looked them up on the California Contractors License Board, I discovered they had only been licensed since 11/01/2009 (the day was 1/25/2012). Is there some other reason the license shows them with that date as being licensed? I don't know. He said they had no complaints against them, and then amended his statement to say only minor complaints. In confirmation, when I checked the BBB, I found 7 complaints, with 5 of them settled. But, do I want to have to go to the BBB to settle a problem? Why didn't the business just take care of the issue? As a comparison, to see if that was usual, I looked up the competing company, which the Sun Coast salesman had discussed, on the BBB website. The competitors were listed with the BBB since 1996, has had zero complaints. The Sun Coast designer/salesman showed us his estimate for the project. Which was only a few thousand less than their competitor had bid (near $90,000). But, the Sun Coast man's bid only had a list of changes to be made. Since, by his own admission, he wasn't a contractor and when questioned about moving pipes and other issues, he said they would have to be made by engineers or the contractor, I couldn't help but wonder how he could give a reliable bid. In comparison, the competing contractor bid not only included a list of the changes, but all the materials required, (eg. how many 2x4s, pieces of sheet rock, tiles). The Sun Coast Remodelers designer/salesman gave an explanation of why and how his bosses allocated work time, so he was not allowed to do more design work, prior to having a commitment. I asked him how we could make a commitment, if we hadn't even agreed on a design. He said he wasn't there to give a hard sell, he just wanted a commitment and asked if there was anything that would prevent us from going forward. My son said, and quot;I am sorry, but we have to get one more estimate.and quot; He tried to dissuade us from additional estimates. (The competing contractor had encouraged us to get additional estimates.) When the Sun Coast designer/salesman left, he didn't leave a copy of the floor plan or estimates. The competing contractor emailed us all the designs and estimated costs. I cannot speak to quality of construction by Sun Coast, as we have not used them, and probably will not. We have used Sun Coast's competing contractor in the past and they gave us top notch quality and service after the fact. The competing contractor returned to fix damage inflicted with wheelchairs. Please note, I am not associated with either Sun Coast or their competitor, except as a consumer.
Description of Work: This was our experience with the consultation and quote from Sun Coast in January, 2012.
