In early 2013, Fred removed all downstairs flooring including wood and ceramic tile, and then installed about 1000 sq ft of new hardwood flooring. About six months later, I noticed a small and quot;softand quot; spot in the kitchen. Thinking it was just seasonal variation in wood, I did nothing at that time. When the spot got bigger over the next few months, I called Fred and asked him to check it out. He investigated and observed the problem areas however the cause was not obvious. So, I contacted the hard wood manufacturer's rep (Hennessy Flooring) and both that rep and Fred made another visit together a few days later. Together they decided that the air pockets occurred due to the short runs of boards in the kitchen area and that the correction would be to remove that area of about 35 sq ft and replace it with longer boards going the other direction. The manufacturer's rep provided a complimentary box of replacement wood and Fred installed the new boards in my kitchen. All at no cost to me. It is an example of how choosing the right licensed contractor with a good reputation is the best way to complete a project. Kudos both to Fred Mertz and to Hennessy Floors (made in America by the way).

Among the many positive aspects of this experience were the facts that this contractor personally worked as part of the crew and was on site every day until the project was finished, i.e. did not work several jobs at once; assisted me with product selection and identified options for my consideration; assisted me with returning/exchanging materials to the flooring retailer that were not consistent with my order; maintained a clean work site and cleaned up every night before leaving the job. His three person crew work with him regularly and were very good at carrying out their work assignments.
