1.0 star rating7/10/2021 I don't usually post reviews but when a contractor, Troy Hurst, is so blatantly a sexist and cannot provide quality workmanship to back up a poor attitude, I feel that it's important to make sure that others do not get involved with contractors like him. He was hired by the HOA to do a simple drywall replacement in the ceiling, patch and paint. His 2 workers were kind and sweet but the quality was sub par. Troy showed up once to review the project and I believe the first day but never once checked in. I had to call and ask questions and text. At first I was fine with that because it's not a big project and respect his time. But when his guys completed the job and left after 5 days of work in which I bought them lunch, drinks, smoothies, allowed them to eat on my balcony daily for over an hour each day, used my bathroom (During COVID when no one was allowing contractors to use any facilities) and gave them a hefty tip, I inspected the work since Troy wasn't going to and saw that they left a whole panel to a window untouched - no paint at all- and made a big square around the perimeter of the ceiling and never filled it in. They also never cleaned up and spilled water all over my carpeting. They didn't patch holes in the walls and scuffed up other walls that were not part of the project. As soon as they left, I text Troy to let him know and he was scheduled to come the next day at 10:30 anyway and I wanted to talk to him. He wanted to send one guy and the electrician the next day at 8:30am but I told him it made no sense to send the electrician when the ceiling needed to be repainted. How do you hang a ceiling fan when the ceiling still needs at least one coat of paint? I said since you are coming at 10:30am, lets talk and I thought I would also have his guys finish painting the other areas they scuffed up since they were there already - I would pay for that - and I had a few other little odds and ends. When he arrived I explained that I would rather he tell his guys about the poor quality as I told him I found it hard to tell such nice guys that they did a sub par job. He said he had the same problem. I was quite surprised as he is the owner and if you can't manage your team, you shouldn't be in business. He sent his guys back the next day - same 2 - no electrician - and they repainted and also Troy found several other areas they missed. When they were done, they spent 2 hours trying to hang a simple ceiling fan - no light - just fan - nothing fancy. After an hour of watching them struggle, I went upstairs and asked why Troy wasn't sending the electrician? They then asked me how to turn the fan on? I said the switch on the wall is on now so you turned it on. One more hour and still nothing. They and Troy told me the people that removed it broke it. I found that very hard to believe as they wrapped everything up so carefully. But, I said fine and told Troy to send his electrician and from there it went downhill. His behavior changed and he turned into a sexist, unprofessional, rude and complete irrational human being. My electrician came the next day and had the fan working - I kid you not - in less than 5 mins. The remote receiver in the fan was burned out because Troy's guys never turned off the switch or electricity before they installed the fan so I had to order a new one. I told Troy we would deduct the cost of the remote transmitter (about 30.00 and the cost for the 2 trips my electrician had to make). Had he sent his electrician, he would not have had to pay anything additional. He then started to tell me that I was late twice for his guys. Well, his guys were an hour late one day - I don't know what they told him and then the second time, they were texting me. They never called either my cell or homeline or rang from the lobby. They were texting. Well I don't carry my phone around when I am in my home expecting them to call me when they get to the front. And the only way I knew they were there was because I turned on my computer and Troy sent me an email that his guys were outside and they would move to another job. Again - no one can call or ring a doorbell? So after he turned dark, I decided to check on him. He is not registered with BBB and has only 25 reviews on yelp and when I broke it down by gender: 14 review from men, 7 from women and the rest you can't tell. To me that was very telling and no license # on his website. I gave him repeated opportunities to just come back and make it right but he refused. He had the nerve to then send an additional invoice for "the wait" time when his guys were late twice and some other nonsense. I spoke with the CSLB, another contractor and some trusted professionals and while they told me I could deduct at least 1k if not more from the bill, I decided on 500 just so he would learn something -perhaps to treat customers well. Troy wants to go to small claims court! Stay far away! Contact me if you want more info!

I've seen a lot of scary contractor shows and heard enough horror stories. I was very nervous about an upcoming total house renovation for a new house we purchased that was seriously out of date. We were initially going to redo the entire 2nd floor of our house only and then wait to do the exterior and 1st floor. This was a total remodel with all walls being moved, bedroom added, all bathrooms, kitchen and bedroom remodeled and only 2 of the original walls would remain in place. We did research and found two contractors we wanted to do evaluate. The first one was very short, in a rush and never took any notes or give us any type of estimate. Troy Hurst on the other hand was extremely patient, friendly and worked with us on all aspects. He gave us an estimate in a very timely manner and was never pushy. After more discussions and comparisons on the quote, Troy Hurst was the contractor we went with. I can say that I am extremely happy we did as the results of his work were amazing. In fact, instead of just doing the 2nd floor, we went ahead and did everything immediately based on our extremely positive interactions with Troy Hurst and his team. Some highlights: 1) Troy and his team were always extremely courteous to us and all our neighbors (everyone in our neighborhood has commented how good the team is) 2) The team was on site every day and on most weekends. This is without me asking for it. We never had a day where his team was on site working for the entire 4 month period of total renovation. 3)As with any projects, there were minor issues, but without exception the Hurst team either identified it and fixed it before we even knew, or immediately and without question fixed problems as we identified them. They really stood behind their work and made sure we were 100% satisfied. 4) Troy didn't overcharge or charge for extras that I'm sure other contractors would. He stands behind his work and is 100% fair. 5) A common issue I've heard is at the end of projects, contractors don't want to finish the small details. I can say that is not true of Troy as he came back and finished all small details shortly after major work (and after we paid). 6) We asked for a lot of custom work (stairs, floors, cabinets, balcony, landscaping, etc) and we got very high quality work. We even began to let his team's creative side take over and trusted their design choices. Troy and his team got to know our style and did some great design work. Overall, we never felt like we were a transaction or that we needed to worry about spending a large amount of money with Hurst Construction. The team has tremendous dedication and Troy Hurst in particular has integrity and honor in his work and business dealings with us. I would highly recommend Hurst Construction to my friends and family without any hesitation. It was a true joy and we are actually sad that we don't get to see the great team every day.

Description of Work: Bathroom remodel - floor tile had to be ripped out twice. The first time because the tiles were crooked. The second time because there were loose and uneven tiles. The back splash above the vanity also had to be ripped out twice because it was uneven and "wavy". The back splash is still not right. Although there was shoddy work done, the contractor noticed it right away and had it re-done, so I have to credit him for that, but it was the fact that it happened twice.

First met Troy Hurst some time back on a referral from a roofing company, at about that time we discovered that our roof was sagging as a result of a previous owners remodel, that removed structural support (all done without permit, subsequently the guy was foreclosed on). The whole situation with the roof was stressful for me and the family, it was great meeting Troy as he's down to earth, easy to talk to and was able to set us at ease. First, Troy gave us the referral of local Structural Engineer, whom we utilized to draw up plans, which were approved through the City. After that we ended up interviewing several contractors, all of whom didn't strike me as professional, courteous and good to work with as Troy Hurst, which is ultimately why we found ourselves going back to him for this project. At no time during this vetting of contractors were we pressured at all from Troy (can't say the same about the rest). Great contractor, very calm, patient, all around good to work with, and listens to your concerns. Stellar contractor, would strongly recommend Troy Hurst for any type of home improvement type project.
