Montano Building was an answer to our prayers! My husband and I own a 4 unit apt. building. Tenant moved out middle of month, only a few days to "fix it up" for next tenant moving in Jan 1, 2012, or sonner. Joel and his crew did everything needed on my list in just 4 days! The apt. is brand new! We are very happy.
Description of Work: Interior painting - kitchen, bedrooms and bathroom, install ceiling fans, patch and paint ceiling where needed. Install shower/tub door, and spray tub.

Joel has provided me with estimates that are more detail than I expected. He broke down the estimates for labor and material, for items in the kitchen, bathrooms, backyard, windows, HVAC, doors, floors, pool, etc. Even during holiday times, he has been responsive in answering my questions. I imagine, It would be hard to find anyone like Joel, who can provide this detail level of estimates in such a short time, during holiday times.I did not end up buying the property, because of a change of plan. But if there is another opportunity to work with Joel in the future, I would love to hire him.
Description of Work: I was in the process to purchase a distressed property. Joel was kind enough to visit the property and provide quite detail estimates on what is required to bring the property to a condition that would be rent-able. Joel also made recommendations on whether I need to replace certain things versus simply fix them in order to save money. I have the impressions that he wants to help me spend my renovation budget wisely.

Joel left the house with promises to follow up with an estimate, but he never did. I had to call him several times, and it was quite difficult to get in touch with him. Ultimately, he never provided an estimate for the job.
Description of Work: He came out to inspect my house so that he could provide an estimate for several repairs. These repairs included windows, electrical work, tiles, and doors.

I contacted them because they are general contractors. Their estimate was lower than another company. They were giong to do more for about the same price. I would have hired them, but my neighbor recommended someone else to me. I have a different style house and additional work needed on my house than I was aware of. This other contractor was able to point it out, so I hired him instead. It did take a few weeks to receive the estimate.

When Joel came to give an estimate he was on time and came across very professional. The estimate came back within our price range so we hired Joel for the project. Joel and his crew began with demolition of the existing wall between our living and dining rooms. They were very thouough with sealing the entire work area with plastic sheeting to prevent the dust/dirt from spreading throught the house. As the work was progressing we decided to make one addition to the job that was not in the original estimate. We asked to have crown molding added to the dining room which Joel was able to accomodate for an additional $325.00. We have hardwood floors in the living room and dining room, so when the wall was opened it was necessary to add hardwood flooring to where the wall had been. Joel was able to match our existing flooring almost perfectly. The job was completed in about a week and came out looking beautiful. Joel and his crew did an exceptional job and we would be happy ro recommend their work.
Description of Work: We hired Montano Building Projects to open up a wall and create an archway from the living room to our dining room.
It could not have gone any smoother. Joel and his team were outstanding. Their work was great quality. They worked very hard and were also efficient. The project ended on time and we had a very quick turnaround since I needed to move in by August 1st. Originally, Joel came out to the house and sent me an estimate a few days later. The estimate was itemized so I could pick which jobs needed to be done before move in. The work started a week or so later. No surprises and absolutely amazing results. I can not say enough about how easy this process was and it was such a pleasant experience. Needless to say I am very happy with Montano Building Projects and will recommend Joel and his team to all my friends.
Description of Work: I hired Montano Building Projects to remodel my 1930's single family home. Work included painting the entire house, refinishing the hardwood floors throughout, tiling the bathroom floor and shower, tiling the kitchen floor, remodeling the laundry room, installing recessed lights, installing wall mounted televisions, and installing light fixtures.

The whole experience was great. I called Joel Montano and he answered in person right away. I described the work needed - repair some drywall in the kitchen walls, paint the kitchen and also do a separate job patching the stucco of an exterior wall where a plumbing leak had been fixed. I had a very tight time line - I wanted to start within two days. He came out the following morning to give me an estimate and was ready to start the job the very next day. Everyone that came to do the work was pleasant, professional, nice and did a great job. The quality of the work was great. I do a lot of projects myself and I was very specific with my requests and how I wanted things done. They followed all my instructions and made sure I was happy with the process, progress and results. The price was very fair and I was very happy to be able to get all the work done within my time frame and so smoothly. I will definitely be calling Joel for more work in the future! I definitely recommend him.
Description of Work: - Patch and Install new drywall in the kitchen walls, prep for paint. - Prime and paint the kitchen walls and ceiling. - Patch the stucco of an exterior wall where a plumbing leak had previously been fixed.

Initially, we had a little difficulty meeting up with Joel but once he showed up we had a great experience. He is professional, his prices are reasonable and the work is great. We are very happy and look forward to working with him on future projects.
Description of Work: Joel and his crew did three different things for us. They installed a water heater, replaced a garage door which involved framing and stucco work and installed outdoor lighting.
We had an office built in our loft area of our townhouse. Joel did a great job of working with our tight schedule and stayed right on budget! We were impressed with the professionalism of everyone who came in to the job and they showed respect for our home and the people in it. The work completed included building two walls and including extra insulation for sound proofing. The walls look like they have always been there and texturizing/painting matches perfectly. Joel and his crew were wonderful to work with and we will definitely look to them in the future if need be. Thank you!

I heard about Joel Montano through word of mouth. We had a room in our house which was always dark and thus under-used, so we decided to place a new skylight and improve the overall lighting situation. I had seen homes with "glowing skylights" i.e. skylights with electrical lights mounted internally for night time illumination, and thought that a combination of that plus recessed LED ceiling lights would be a good, energy-efficient arrangement so that we could make the room into a nice study space for our school-age children. Joel came to meet me and look at the space. He appeared young but knowledgeable, dedicated, and trustworthy. He had never tried making a glowing skylight but was open to the idea. We communicated via email to toss around some design ideas and to review different LED lighting options. He gave me a reasonably priced proposal. We had some bad weather around the time the project was supposed to begin, which understandably resulted in some postponement. When the weather cleared up, Joel came by to mark out the work on the ceiling and confirm that it was what I had envisioned. When the project began, there were some initial obstacles encountered - namely, a truss had to be cut to make room for the skylight opening. Joel was resourceful in building two additional trusses flanking the skylight so that the original truss could be cut without causing any structural weaknesses in the roof. I carefully examined the work as it progressed. It was very thoughtful, well planned, and well executed. The job was completed just a few days ago. Because of the truss issue, the job took some additional work, materials, and time. The additional charges were again very reasonable. The additional time did not bother me - it was clear that the job was being done carefully, and that Joel and his team were making daily progress. I know that he has other jobs going on, but that did not distract him from making this project move along efficiently. I really appreciated that. The skylight has greatly improved the whole atmosphere of our house. I am happy when I see the sunlight in the morning. At night, the reflected light from the fluorescents within the skylight opening has a simply beautiful quality (I am picky about these things). The whole family is already getting a lot more use out of what was once a pretty depressing room. We are going to ask Joel and his team to work on several other projects. This initial experience gave us a lot of confidence in him. He has the skills, knowledge, and motivation to do a good job. He communicates well and is honest. His company is small, family-run, and employs a small number of trusted co-workers.

From initial bid to completion, the job went very smoothly. Construction, especially remodel on a home being lived in, is often nerve wracking and stressful. Working with Montano Building minimized the headaches and made for a pleasurable experience. Not only do we feel we have a contractor we can trust now, but we feel like we have new friends. We fiind ourselves hoping Joel, his family, and his crew feel the same.
Description of Work: Our small house in Gardena has been our home for 13 years. With the growing of our family we decided to demolish an old patio add on, and add a Master Bedroom Suite, complete with walk in closet, Jacuzzi tub, and a small office space. A pantry and hallway were also added. We researched Montano Building, (Joel Montano) from Angies list and from the favorable reviews, decided to call him to participate in the bidding. Joel was not the lowest bid, nor was he the highest, but based on Angies list reviews, and after having met him, we decided to go with him. Being an electrician, and having family in construction, our project was going to be a mixed job...we needed Joel for some parts of the job, and we would do other parts. This worked seamlessly, and the cooperation from the two teams went very well. We helped Joel's crew occasionally and they helped us as well. I can't say enough good things about Joel's family and crew. What a great bunch of guys. The City of Gardena is notorious for red tape when it comes to construction permitting and paperwork. Without Joel, I don't think we would have made it. He was there, going to bat for us when there were problems, and advising us when we needed help dealing with the city for our end of the project. There were delays and snags, but none of them from Montano Building. Even with last minute changes, requests, and add ons, Joel was always fair with his pricing. One notable incident was during the demolition. We found that under the concrete slab, there was six inches of sand, then ANOTHER slab! I was sure this was going to be a huge addition to the cost, but Joel and crew just carried on, demolishing the extra slab. I paid a very small price for the extra concrete dumper needed to haul away the debris...Joel did not charge me for the extra labor. The payment schedule was structured and fair, with progress payments made as the building proceeded. We are very happy with Montano Building and they will be my go to contractor in the future. I have more work planned, and Joel will be the only one I call.

They were on the high side but I expected it to be. They are an established company as opposed to a small guy. There was a significant delay in getting me the quote. He had said that he would get back to me in two days and it was more than a week. He had defined the time period and it happened twice. The second time was long after the promised date but once I got it, it was a very professional estimate. I got the impression that he really knew what he was doing. He initially came out very promptly. I would possibly consider him in the future.

I've used Joel for years and will continue to use him for years more. He always gives us the straight numbers and sticks to them throughout the project -- you won't get bait and switch from him. He and his team can do most of the work themselves but when they do bring in subs, I had generally good results with them. Job was finished on time and on budget... go try to find another contractor in LA who can leave his customers happy in the end with excellent results ... not very common in my experience but Joel always delivers for me.
Description of Work: Partial house remodel. Installed new windows/doors, remodeled two bathrooms, installed fireplace and the list goes on. His work is clean and well done and I'm a perfectionist -- so that is a high mark. During the construction, Joel was punctual and set reasonable deadlines and met them all. Joel is new school but with an old world sense of craftsmanship and honesty. I've used him for so many years now, I consider him a friend beyond our contractor. Frankly, if he didn't ask me to make a note here on Angies list, I wouldn't have because he's a best kept secret I'd rather not expose to everyone in LA. Our house looks great and I credit Joel and his excellent team of pros with much of the results.

This remodeling project was an excellent experience. Joel Montano is very good at communicating, through phone and email, so that I always felt comfortable about the project, the progress and the costs. There were no surprises. It is a family business, so the folks that did the work were all part of the family. I felt very comfortable leaving them in my house. They were prompt, neat, on time and nice. I have already made plans to hire them again for my next bathroom!

I feel truly lucky to have found Joel Montano and his team. Planning and going through a full remodel is a big challenge for any home owner, but from the get-go, Joel was incredibly helpful, creative, and inventive. I actually really enjoyed every step of the way, because I had such a competent, intelligent, pleasant contractor. Joel was personally working on the site hands-on, and overseeing his team of mostly family members who are all in the building trade for generations. He's experienced, professional, reliable, punctual, very well organized, and understands and masters every aspect of the job. I can highly recommend him, and will use him from this point forward for any and all construction and remodel projects. He came out twice to discuss and bid for the work, and provided me with a detailed budget, and schedule. From day one, it was remarkable how organized and clean the construction site was kept. Demolition went fast -- other than so many, Joel and his team didn't work through the house with brute force and slash hammers. Instead, they de-installed built ins, and made sure recyclables would get disposed of properly. He then did a thorough inspection of electrical and plumbing, canceled and/or added outlets, and prepped for the framing. Joel is a masterful builder and takes great pride in his skills and expertise. The new walls and built-ins are smooth, level, earthquake safe, and 100% perfect. The reconfigured bathrooms required new drain and supply lines which were done beautifully. The house was painted and finished to perfection. As you can see, I whole-heartedly recommend Joel Montano. Good luck with your projects!
Description of Work: Full renovation and remodel of a two bedroom, two bathroom house: Demolition of kitchen, bathrooms, all built-ins, fixtures, some doors and walls. Construction included framing, dry-walling, electrical and plumbing upgrade, tiling, kitchen and bath installation including a new shower and tub area, new doors, lights, casing and molding, interior and some exterior paint, and more...
