I read the reviews here on Angie's List and decided to use them. I had several things done here and had very different impressions of each part. I originally brought the 1997 Lexus in to get the driver's side seat belt fixed (I assumed the female portion needed replacing), the cigarette lighters fixed since they were unreliable and the interior door handle was coming off. They told me that basically the female portion was gummy and that they cleaned it so it would latch 19/20 insertions. I thought that was OK. They also told me that something had gotten into the cigarette lighters and melted over most of the charging surface and that's why I got unreliable function. They said I could try and clean it or have them replace it which I agreed to. They fixed the door handle. I was very happy at the end of this appointment. Then I made appointments for both cars to have maintenance checks done on them since I hadn't kept them perfectly maintained and wasn't sure what needed doing. Before the maintenance inspection, the Ford broke down. I had it towed there and they told me it was the fuel pump and replacing it and the filter would cost $700. I said to do it. I don't know if it was a good price or not. I have since seen reference for the same work on 2000 Ford Focuses on the web for between $450 and $750. Then they did the maintenance inspection. They came back with a laundry list of things ranging from urgent to needing to be done soon. I believed them, but since the work came to $1300 and the car's worth $2220, I wanted to look into cheaper ways- I talked to my dad about doing things in the driveway, getting cheap, less skilled places to do it, etc. Then the Lexus went in for the inspection and got back another laundry list. But since I'd already balked at doing the work with her with the Ford, she framed it differently saying that I had some time for most of it. They also replaced the cigarette lighters and since the seat belt wasn't working again, I asked them to replace that too. The end result of the work fixing problems was good. At this point I have dealt with or gotten second opinions on most of the things on the maintenance list for the Ford. Some were totally legitimate. Some were completely off base. Two examples of being off base were that my Transmission Fluid needed replacing. But when my father looked at it, it was still pink and almost clear. A mechanic concurred it did not need replacing. When I looked in my maintenance record book, I'd had the transmission serviced just 25,000 miles before. Also, they said I needed new spark wires and plugs. But the wires were also just replaced 25,000 miles ago and should last 100,000 miles. The spark plugs were old, but did not have any black on them indicating needing replacement. They did have white on them which my father said is normal and fine. We did replace them however. Things they were accurate about, but framing in a more time-sensitive way than I feel was warranted, were the front brakes (which I did replace and needed replacement soon, but not immediately as they indicated), the rear brakes which they said could wait a couple of months, and which, upon further questioning, I found out probably had half their meat left on them- although they said the drums were warped. But another mechanic thought I would be OK for another year or two. Things they were right on about included a tire that needed replacement. My basic problem with them (besides the things that were completely inaccurate) is that they think if something needs doing in the next 10-20,000 miles, then it should be done "soon". That is a year or 2 of driving. I think they should frame it in those (mileage) terms. Not doing so, and saying I need things that I don't need at all, makes me feel like they are trying to drum up business through unnecessary work. I haven't yet looked into the Lexus to figure out what needs doing when. But it is very possible that I'll find the exact same thing. Except this time she had told me that I had some time. I think because I had balked at immediately doing the work on the Ford with her, and looked into other ways of getting it done more cheaply. She did give me the web coupon discount for the inspection since I had over $150 worth of work done on each car, although not derived from the maintenance inspection. That was nice of her.
