We searched for a porcelain tile that we liked, and then we obtained two bids. Bryce the Tile Guy (Bryce Jones) was recommended by our roof installer. Our roof installer had previously recommended two other people whom I had used for drywall repair ($5,000) and metal vent fabrication ($2,000), both of whom were excellent. Thus when our roof installer highly recommended Bryce, we took his advice. In addition, Bryce outbid the other tile installer by approximately $1,500. We received an estimate from Bryce on October 7, 2008 which included $4,611 for labor and materials, $3,965 for the porcelain tile. We agreed to proceed and Bryce asked to purchase the tile directly from the distributor. The porcelain tile was $320 more than Bryce had estimated as we paid $4,286.30. The flooring project involved 20" x 20" tile with thin grout lines. In addition he had verbally agreed to make two holes in the tile in order to allow for the housing of two ground electrical outlets to be removed. Bryce explained how we was motivated in getting the project done quickly and was planning to start on October 13. He explained how he would finish the project by Sunday October 18th. My wife and I left for an extended weekend wedding trip. On Saturday the 17th I left a voice mail message with Bryce asking him about the status of the flooring. He did not return my call. When we returned to the home on Monday October 19th we were truly disappointed that the tile work had not commenced. Bryce finally returned my phone call two days later and apologized due to a family emergency. I understood and was sympathetic. Bryce started the tile work on Tuesday October 21st. He had estimated a 5-6 working day project. On some days he wouldn't show up, complaining about his half-brother's poor work ethic. He eventually continued the project with his dad. Both Bryce and his dad constantly complained about the unevenness of the floor and the complexity of the project. We were patient, and they were constantly behind schedule. They eventually finished laying the tile and sealed the tile on November 9th. However they had failed to make the two holes large enough for the electrical outlets in the ground. Bryce assured me that once he picked up the proper drill bit, then he would make the outlet holes. I made the mistake of paying the remainder of the balance on November 7, prior to the drilling of the electrical outlet holes. November 17: After I left many text message and voice mails, Bryce responded with a text message: "I picked up the core drill bit. I just need to find some time to get over there and drill the holes." November 21: "I have the bit to do it. Just too busy right now. I'll get it done in the next couple of days." Dec 3: "I'm extremely busy right now..." It's now Dec 18th and Bryce rarely returns phone calls/text messages. I am very disappointed that he cannot find 45 minutes in his schedule to finish the job.
Description of Work: Installation of 940 square feet of porcelain tile on concrete flooring.
