Sunguard Custom Painting

I bought the discount coupon but was not ready to start the work, as I had to replace the side garage door and cut down a cactus that was against the house. That took a bit longer than I expected, but then I contacted Sunguard to schedule. Because of the rains, it took a couple of weeks, but I was not in any rush. They came on Thursday morning as scheduled and pressure washed the entire exterior and scraped all the peeling paint (and there was *much* peeling paint on the underside of the eaves) and primed all the bare wood. Friday they came back and painted everything. I found a couple of minor things on the walk-through which they promptly corrected. They finished cleaning up and got all the masking paper (and most of the paint chips) cleaned up by about 5:45. The house looks great now. I painted my previous house myself, but it was a single-story, and I was 15 years younger. So I know how much work this is, and a two-story house is even more difficult. Overall, this was a great experience and I would use Sunguard again.

They pressure washed the first day and painted the second. They did a good job prepping the house and masking everything off so that paint only went where it was supposed to go. I thought their price was fair and I'm definitely happy with the end result. I enjoyed speaking with the owners when they came by both days, they seem like really nice guys. I liked them enough to call them back out to re-coat my patio deck a few days later. They patched and re-coated it and it turned out as good as the house did. They promised to do a good job and they delivered. I couldn't ask more than that.

Overall, the quality of the painting was good. The issue lies in the details, in the follow-up. Very little effort was made to carefully protect the shrubs and surrounding edging when the house was sprayed. Paint got onto the patio cushions, the hose, the pebbles, the vines and shrubs. The front gate, admittedly old, wasn't properly wire-brushed or sanded so at least it had a fighting chance to look decent with its new coat of paint. A novice, sent to correct another novice's attempt, kept painting it and kept making runny rivulets of paint. Walter Johnston is the closer. George Johnston, one of the owners, the ol' man as he's called, is well-intentioned and made an attempt to correct things. Returned several times to right the errors, but then turned, in a fit of pique. When I asked him to please try and remove the globs of paint they got on my 50' hose, he thrust $25 cash at me and said "buy another hose". I objected but he was already down the driveway and I was blocked by a wet gate. An unnecessary emotional outburst and an unprofessional reproach to a customer, who simply wants things put back the way the painters found them.. Warning to prospective clients: do not have your windows or glass doors washed prior to power-washing. The power-washing process unloosens dirt from the house and it streams down on the glass. George has a good work ethic. The painting staff needs ?Pre-Paint Boot Camp? training for proper paint prep for homes and needs closer supervision.

Frustrating getting date set after several attempts. Tried to up-sell my husband to whole house paint job on the first visit . Did not listen well.

Wow!! We love our 'new' house and Sunguard. Even the neighbors have come by to compliment the color and the beautiful job they did. They were a pleasure to deal with in every respect. Highly recommended. It's taken me a little time to get a review done because of the holidays but it was so nice to have the work completed before Christmas and have the beautiful new paint with our decorations. Sunguard, supervised by Walter Johnston, showed up when they said they would and did a great job on some of our more challenging spots, like our second-story deck and stucco fencing. They had to work around some bad weather that week and we were amazed they were able to finish quickly under the circumstances. The pricing was very reasonable and we took advantage of a great sale by Angie's List, which enabled us to choose some upgraded paint that we love and stay within our budget. The guys were very pleasant and super diligent. An excellent experience!

They did a great job -- they were punctual, efficient and did good work. They also came out a couple weeks in advance to put some sample paint colors on the house to choose from, which was a big help.

The father and son team was very responsive. They touched up and repaired all areas requested including some we hadn't even noticed. We are very pleased with the work performed.

Painters were very careful in sealing and patching. They were careful in not making a mess. Had some confusion with the colors but they corrected before they left that day. Looks wonderful

The owner was easy to work with and the painters were two nice young men. The only complaint was that they ran out of time and paint. The last part was pretty thin and they missed some spots. But we were pretty pleased with the job. The house looks good.

The house was built in 2002 and needed to be repainted. Sunguard was offering a special price of $1699 and based on many positive reviews on Anglies list I called them to come out and look at my house. Walter Johnston came to the house within a day or two and told me based on the size of my home the price would be $1900 which was still a fair price given that the job included premium paint. Another AMAZING job by Walter and his team! I used Sunguard for the interior of my house and now for the exterior. I had a hard time deciding on color and worked with Walter to select the best picks. I picked white with dark brown trim. It took a couple of coats because it was the first time the block home had been painted. His team arrived on time, completed the job on time and did not leave any mess. They worked extremely diligently preparing the house with the pressure wash, taping the house to paint the trim and then painting the trim to paint the house. They did an excellent job!!! I could not be HAPPIER. They even offered to paint a few iron gates and coverings without charge. They do not nickle and dime you and just look to make the customer happy. They are honest and truly do a great job. The service was excellent. The price was great. I highly recommend this company and its services.

Abbreviated Version: (all comment explained in the long version) The Good - Excellent Paint Job - Excellent Price (lowest of 3 bids) - Small stucco job they did looks awesome - Very friendly, helpful, courteous workers - Cared about the details, touched up spots I didn't notice The Negative - Lost contact for 10 days, was wondering if they had forgot about us about a week or two before the date they had given me - A couple patches of ground rock discolored by the paint Long Verson: We decided to get three estimates to see what ballpark we would be working in, Hugh was the first representative we met from Sunguard. At first he explained why not to use other companies, and I personally never like that approach, but then he started talking about what Sunguard would do to exceed the services of any others. He mentioned things like the trim around the garage, the way they clean and prep before the job, painting all the way down to the ground, their touch-up process and the final outcome. Sunguard's bid also came in lower than the other two bids we got, and they even included a small stucco job in the back on a 2-sided, about 4 foot high air conditioning wall I had built. We wanted it stuccoed to match the house, and they included the job in the total cost for less than any other companies bid just for the paint job. We decided to go with them and they gave us a date about three weeks out, which seemed more than reasonable and then we didn't hear from them for a week and a half, maybe that is standard, but it seemed weird to us, nonetheless, when we gave them a call just to check up, Walter called us back immediately and started getting the info on our colors and plans and they even moved up their start day by three days, which made things even better. Jaime was the first man to show up on the first day and he was awesome throughout the two days. He made sure that everything was done right and he and his partner, Roberto, on the second day did most of the work. Jaime worked mostly by himself the first day, cleaning, power washing, and scraping the house to prep it. It took him a majority of the day, from like 10am til about 4-5pm. Anytime he was unsure what to do he came and asked us how we wanted it done. Walter (the owner) showed up the first day in the afternoon to check up on how things were going and from the first meeting was nice and very personable. He ensured us of the quality of the job that would be done and he definitely didn't disappoint. He also came the second day to make sure the job had been done correctly and to help out so that everything was just right. We were more than happy with the paint job that was done and would definitely use Sunguard again in the future. We love the way the house looks and they took care of details that I never would have thought of, such us painting the watering faucets, pvc pipes for the sprinkeler system, and certain wires so that they fit in seamlessly with the house. They replaced the siding on the garage and painted the new siding so that it looks much cleaner. We have been more than happy with the job done. The only negatives I could add would be the lost contact for about 10 days previously mentioned, and two patches of rock on the ground (one in the front and one in the back) were discolored by the paint, not really a big deal, just had to mix it around with other rock to get rid of it. Again, excellent company, I felt like they actually cared if I like it.

From the first time we contacted Mr. Johnston and his sons we had a top notch, professional and seamless experience. The work ethic of their team was amazing. They are punctual, clean, respectful and we will uses them again in the future for our needs. We HIGHLY recommend them!

Sunguard was great to deal with. They arrived on time and gave us a fair quote for the work. They were very courteous and hard working. The end result looks beautiful. When they arrived to begin the job I asked how much extra it would cost to paint a long side wall that wasn't in the original quote. They gave me an early Thanksgiving present, painting it at no extra cost since they had paint and workmen already on-site.

It worked out just fine. They did a good job and they did it quickly. They weren't any unexpected issues after they came out and talked to us. They cost more.

When George called he explained that the Big Deal coupon was not correct if I wanted acrylic paint - the $1,299.99 was for "regular" paint but he would make it right. He came by later that day to see the house and quoted me an additional $1,000.00 more stating that the coupon was incorrect and should not have been posted on Angie's List and that he told Angie's List to take it off the web site - although it's still there as I write.

The company is a sham

Very impressed with every aspect of Sunguard's service. They went above and beyond! Very professional. Very flexible. Their coupon said it was for up to two colors they let us use three. A seam in the stucco was bothering me so Sunguard stopped in the middle of the job, went store and patched the seam at no additional cost. We had extra paint so Walter offered to paint the block wall between our house and neighbor's. No additional cost. It looks great. Prep work was meticulous. The crew worked quickly and efficiently. Follow-up on any concern was immediate and exceeded expectations. Can't recommend them enough!

Sunguard has done work for me before, with which I was pleased. However, this particular Big Deal was advertised as a complete interior painting for up to 1500 SF - the rooms I had designated did not add up to quite this total, so I thought I was within the parameters of the deal. Sunguard came out to view the job, and told me that because of my hardwood floors, amount of furniture, custom drapes, etc., they could not do my painting for the advertised price. I wish they had included these restrictions in the details of the Deal.
