We hired Ward North American moving company for our relocation from San Antonio to Phoenix. We would like to warn everyone not to hire this company for their house move or relocation. We had a horrible experience. Lots of our stuff was damaged in the transit, staff was very rude and mostly clueless. They did not even bother to notify us when they could not deliver on the promised date. We had to keep calling them to figure out where our stuff was. We now feel that we should have looked at all of their negative reviews before hiring the incompetent North American Moving company. So do your homework and due diligence hiring any movers. They were very expensive, and we thought it would be smooth and professional move as promised, but it was the opposite. We have moved many times before but never had such a bad experience and poor customer service (previous moves were through employers). Packing was horrible and done by inexperienced staff. They did not protect the heavy furniture. They reimbursed us after several months for small broken items but not for the dining table. They are saying they are not liable for the crack as it is weather related, even though it cracked during the move. They even sold us insurance and still will not reimburse us. People who came to deliver the stuff were shocked to see how the stuff was packed and handled. All the boxes were damaged and torn. We have photos to show their packing and how they handled our stuff. If you see North American Moving company, run in the opposite direction as fast as you can. Still not convinced, here are top 10 reasons for avoiding North American Moving Company's moving and relocation services: -Poor and rude customer service -Late delivery and no notification -Poor packing and handling of your prized possessions -Damaged items -No accountability of the damages (though you will get very creative excuses) -Big delays in processing your claim (person told me that there is big delay to be fair to all customers - meaning that the justification is that they mistreat everyone.) -Expensive -Unprofessional staff (they will hire 3rd party contractors and hourly people and send them for your move) -Lots of headache in dealing with them -Did I already say what a nightmare Good luck with your move.

The representative quoted 4 hours to complete the job of wrapping and moving the furniture from one house to 2 separate houses, and this estimate was provided on the contract. The distance between the origination location and the first drop is 26 miles, and then 7 miles to the second location. It took 2 men 1 1/2 hours to wrap and load the 11 pieces of furniture on the truck, and 40 minutes, at 9:30 on a Saturday morning, to drive to the first location, and another 40 minutes to unwrap and place 6 pieces of furniture. Then it took 25 minutes to drive the 7 miles to the second location, and another 40 minutes to unwrap and place the remaining 5 pieces of furniture. This added up to 3 hours and 55 minutes, however the amount charged was for 6 1/2 hours. At the end of the job, we were informed by the movers that the drive time to and from the warehouse is charged in addition to the actual work time. NOWHERE in the contract does it state that travel time is chargeable!
Description of Work: Wrap and move 11 pieces of small furniture from central Phoenix to Gilbert. No piece of furniture weighed over 50 pounds. Total distance of 33 miles

They were horrible. It’s strange the way they did it. They are a major moving company. The major moving company hires a smaller local company to come in and pack you up. Then the next day they hire another company to load your furniture and belongings. Then they hire another company to drive you across the country. Then when they get to your destination they hire another local company to unpack the truck. Do not use them.

I would never use this company again. They tell me that they are a "multi million dollar" company and "they have to follow procedures. " They sent out a truck that was too small to fit my refrigerator, they dropped and trashed my refrigerator and they feel they have no liability because I did not buy enough insurance. In my opinion this is a very unethical " multi-million dollar" company.
Description of Work: We hired this company to move us from an our apartment into our home. The truck that they brought was not large enough to accommodate our built in side by side refrigerator-freezer without tipping it to get it into and out of the truck. While they were tipping the refrigerator to get it out of the truck they lost control of it and dropped it. It started to leak fluid all over the driveway. A factory authorized appliance technician said that the fluid was compressor oil and that the refrigerator was not repairable. While the company was negligent for bringing a truck that was too small and loosing control of the refrigerator they will only reimburse me about $300.00 for a $7500.00 refrigerator. According to the company I did not buy enough insurance to cover the cost of replacing the refrigerator so it is my fault, although not one person explained anything about insurance to me that day.

Response from Ward North American Van Lines
The shipper used our moving company two times. The first to move their goods to an apartment house and the second to return their goods to the original home. Ward, in fact, moved the refrigerator two times. In each case, Ward movers used a standard two wheel appliance dolly to tip the frig back at 1st origin and push it up a walk-board and into the first truck. That first truck moved the goods to the apartment and, again, a 2 wheel dolly was placed under it, tilted the frig back and went down the walk-board and placed the unit into the apartment garage. Many months later, Ward was contracted to move the customer back to their original home. IN EACH OF THE TWO MOVES, THE SHIPPER WAS PROVIDED WITH THE OPTION TO INCREASE THE LIABILITY OF OUR COMPANY FROM 60 CENTS PER POUND PER ARTICLE TO WHAT EVER VALUE THEY FELT APPROPRIATE AND PROVABLE. The customer opted not to purchase increased liability and the goods traveled both ways at the 60 cents per pound per article maximum liability. At the time of the second move, the crew again used a two wheel dolly to tip the frig back and wheel it up a walk-board and into the truck. The truck and customers goods went back to the original residence from months before. One final time, the crew placed a two wheel dolly under the frig – tipped it back – pushed it towards the walk-board and started to wheel it down. FACT – the size of the van used in each move had nothing to do with how the frig was wheeled into and/or out of the hauling van equipment. On the second move the equipment had a power lift gate. The crew wisely elected to use a walk-board instead because the frig was free-wheeling on four castors and could easily have fallen off of the lift gate. FACT – while going down the walk-board the last time the two crew members on bottom were unable to prevent the frig from accelerating and its top from lowering. And so the crew member holding the dolly handles was forced to let the top of the dolly lower until it rested upon one of his knees. THE DOLLY AND THE FRIG NEVER “FELL” AND NEVER RESTED UPON THE WALKBOARD AND/OR THE GROUND. FACT – the customer’s wife was looking out and a front window and saw all of the above and never challenged the crew with any contradiction when they discussed the oil leak that was observed from the street pavement and up the driveway. After regaining control, the crew pushed the frig into the garage, the oil trail was noticed by the crew, and reported to the shipper, however the crew was also aware that the frig had “spit” fluids at them from the top portion, and that fluids were visible in the tubing on the rear at the time of the loading from origin. FACT – the frig shows no damage on the exterior from mishandling. Ward always follows proper business practice. The customer had options. The customer chose to be financially austere rather than protective valuation prudent. Every freight service in America prices its product based upon its level of liability. Ward has been unflinching in its admission that it may very well owe this customer valuation settlement – IF, AND WHEN, THIS CUSTOMER FILES A CLAIM. To date this has not happened. Ward also would respectfully request that it have the opportunity to have its appliance claim adjuster visit and inspect the claimed item. Ward is not seeking confrontation. Ward would respectfully point to the fact that when we all, as consumer, elect to set valuations every day in our insurance values for our homes, furniture, cars, motorcycles and boats – in the deductible amount for those coverages. We select this coverage because we know that accidents and events happen. No insurance company is going to provide greater coverage based upon their customers claim that someone should have told them that a catastrophic even might happen. THAT THE SHIPPER HAD OPTIONS IS VERIFIED IN BOLD AND CLEARLY WRITTEN ADVISORY LANGUAGE IN A PROMINENT SPOT ON THE BILL OF LADING COVERING THE MOVEMENT OF THIS SHIPMENT. The shipper, in his own handwriting, inserted that he wanted the “free” 60 cents per pound per article that was included in the base rate and in signing for that rejected his option to increase the value of his goods to full value. Please contact this writer if you have any questions regarding this response.
